Would you still say the same when your wife and kids are killed by a romanian truck driver who has driven 10 hours or more each day for the last 3 weeks without a break
10hrs a day for three weeks you thinks a lot?
I meant AT LEAST 10hrs a day,every day for 3 weeks.
Rikki:
Somesones running bent and threatening my livelhood- ■■■■ right I would make that call
All valid and fair points Rikki BUT personally I’d be needing more than “some drivers” bullspoutings before considering causing grief.
One malcontents RDC attention seeking waffle could well result in needless grief for a company and it’s good honest drivers.
Mud sticks when it’s slung, one reason you yourself crack down on posts about companies with money troubles.
So whilst I agree with you in principle, a certain amount of caution must be exercised I feel.
No to grassing, no matter what the alleged crime.
and what a load of crap about someone killing a wife and kids because they bent the rules. the rules make unsafe driving the norm.
Thanks for all the views. I have to admit Im shocked at the attitude in letting sleeping dogs lie… Only a few weeks ago we were talking about a fatal accident on the M1 where a truck driver died after ploughing into the back of a stationary truck. We can only speculate as to the cause. I wouldnt want my conscience pricked by a death of a driver or innocent others, especially given that I could have done something about it. For the record I saw the tachos as the driver wasnt upto speed with even the basic tacho regs, and needed a different view. Point 2, is that the company arnt pinching work off us, so there is NO spite issue. 3. The drivers will take the rap for their errors, and its prob more than likely the management will assume business in a different guise, prob leaving drivers, suppliers and customers behind.
Would getting VOSA aware that there may be issues, by getting them pulled encourage them to run straighter? sort of a warning? and if they uncover far more serious shortcomings then so be it??

I think that statement must be the stupidest thing I have read on here

really?
why not put a little thought into it?
here’s a couple of examples:
a driver is confident that he can make it to a nice quiet parking area, he gets stuck in traffic, then after the traffic gets going again he finds he’s out of time, and has to park in a layby on the side of a dual carriageway. although he has had 9 hours off he gets very little sleep. but the law says he’s legal to drive.
but his mate who was behind him says “sod that, i’m pulling the fuse”. he gets to a decent parking area and takes 9 hours off, but he sleeps like a log.
in my view one is legal but unsafe, the other is illegal but safe.
How thick are some people.
Drivers and firms running bent are taking money out of all our pockets,
Them running bent gets the rates for all of us cut which means no wage rise for the last 3 years for me.
So would I shop someone ?

what makes you think that?
companies pay more for reliability. it’s not all about who’s the cheapest.
I notice there seems to be some lack of confidence in “getting another job” when choosing to keep one’s mouth shut.
It is a lot harder to get another job if the firm shuts shop & opens up with new staff elsewhere, OR if you are busted by VOSA, OR if you end up being fined/jailed, OR if you end up injuring or worse both yourself and others. OR of course if other prospective employers hear “Oh - It’s Him - Wasn’t he still working for Grabbit & Run Ltd when they got busted for running bent? - Must have been one of their loyal drivers aiding and abetting them”
As has been said, no new firm will be offering a job, no sympathies for all that loyalty shown. Only contempt for being the proverbial kommandant guard!

really? Most companies wanting a load shifted will look at the bottom line first, how much? If companies are willing to pay more for reliable service how do you explain Stobart?

To say that unsafe running is normal and caused by the rules is complete ■■■■■■■■!
The only thing responsible for bent or unsafe practices is the driver themselves

i didn’t say that running bent is the norm. i said the rules make it unsafe.
I think if a firm expects you to run bent so they can make it pay then they deserve being dobbed in, if they’re cutting corners with the hours what else are they cutting corners with! However, I have in the past not run to the letter of the law…this was for my benefit and nobody else’s and this was long before the digital age came about! I wouldn’t know where to start now a days. Now analogue what a piece of ■■■■ to fiddle
I agree and disagree with most of whats been said…we all ran bent at some time, especially when we had no control, like Vosa, and ran on log books…if a driver wants to run bent, thats his choice, and no one can ever stop it, stop one, another takes his place. What actually constitutes running bent, we all get infringements with the new equipment we have to use, is that running bent, i started work at 0700, didnt put the card in till 0800, is that running bent, went 2 minutes under my break, is that bent, or went 3 minutes over my 15 hr day, is that bent.?..we know about drivers who use a magnet, foreign and english, its to their advantage, not the industry, personally, i dont see the need for it, or for drivers to drive like lunatics, take breaks when unloadingb etc, etc, thats their business though, and i wouldnt grass them for that, but i would if i knew a driver was drunk.
I believe we are all controlled by regulations that do not fit this modern age, we should not be allowed to work for 15 hrs, after travelling there and back taking another 2 hrs, and only having a 9 hr break, in actual fact, a driver gets around 7 hrs rest if hes lucky, now thats dangerous, but is sanctioned by the laws that be as ok, maybe it was ok in the days when a driver could catch up on his sleep whilst being tipped, but at most RDCs you cannot sit in the cab, let alone sleep, so whos fighting our corner on that one…no one
lightning:
What If on talking to another driver, of a fellow haulier, you found out that they were bending the tachograph regs as far as they really could. These flex’s would include a 2.30am start till 1900 spreads. 4x 9hr sleeps without splitting one (3 hrs + 9hrs ), and taking the paper tacho out to load / unload. The truck this guy was driving was an 06 volvo which I thought would have been digital, but wasn’t.
Question is would you raise said issues with the vosa men??
Never,it would be a bit two-faced as I did my fair share of running bent in the eighties.
Stevie DS:
Let him keep breaking the rules and when he is so tired he kills a family due to falling asleep at the wheel just sigh and say oh well it eas none of my business.
Remember to think of the children!
Live and let live…And if you believe that old bull that rikki came out with, well none of us would have any freedoms and we would all be too busy watching others to make sure we, ourselves, were doing a good job.
Never heard so much hot air in all my life
