JPR at Llangurig A470

THat was taken during the construction of the Llangurig bypass by the looks of it . Bet Dave renagade will know !

Has to be the Llangurig bypass KK,with that Welsh Office sign, probably already open with the Llanidloes sign. There always was a turn for Llanidloes where the roundabout is nowadays, which met the road from Llangurig village further on,but that road was blocked off and the traffic coming from the west was diverted via the new roundabout and wider road.I hauled a lot of stuff to Llanidloes in the late 60’s to a factory being built by a Kington builder called Powells who I drove a little BMC FG for,as a 19/20 year old.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave was that Powells Kington of Sunset depot who had a chinese 6 ERF tipper ?

The very same KK,it was a chinese six ERF KV flatbed.John Gwilliam from Clifford drove it when I started there,he hauled feedstuff to Hay & Brecon Farmers at Hay on Wye most of the time from the Docks,he left and Bill McQueen then drove it until the plating law came in,then Powells bought two new six wheeler ERF tippers, they had already got an eight wheeler which sometimes hauled for Hay & Brecon as well as doubling up as a tipper out of the quarries,as well as running about four Bedford tippers.
They packed up in the 70’s as you probably know. They ran a lot of various lorries in their time.
Cheers Dave

Hi Dave thanks for that you really know your stuff best regards kk .

Sorry getting confused in my old age.Sometimes it’s busy, but I think a lot are using the A483 because of the big road job below Newbridge on Wye on the A470.
Cheers Dave.

FLOURPOWER:
Hi Dave,do you know if the ERF ES8 BULKER L338 XDG in the last batch of Mansell davis photos was theirs on contract or who it belonged to?cheers flourpower.

It was on the WFP contract at Carmarthen mate, the old Dalgety mill; finished when Wynnstay bought the site.

Hi gnasty gnome,
BOCM-PAUL did the same when they bought the Countrywide mill at Presteigne.
Used to see Berkeley Price from Llandovery bulkers picking up from there, but apart from a curtainsider there and the fuel tanker’s of Countrywide, very little goes on there now.
Another scenario which is all to common sadly with many firms throughout the Country.
Soapbox parked up now…
Cheers Dave.

There’s a story behind Presteigne, Dave. As you might know it was supposed to be turned into a woodchip plant, producing pelletised fuel from biomass. Basically, our firm got an offer which they really couldn’t refuse, something to do with a dirty great big government grant for the biomass, and since the mill needed a lot spending on it they took the money; improvements in production at other mills had made it pretty much surplus anyway. We ran blends out of there for a while, but they just couldn’t make it pay; the location didn’t help, it’s not the best of places to run artic bulkers to and from. Denbigh went the same way, but that’s still a distribution depot, although the mill itself is mothballed. Subsequently, at Presteigne, there’s been a load of aggro with planning consent etc; that’s why nothing seems to have happened. My FM9 came from there.

Berkley Price is still busy, I see either him or Eric most days. Berkley runs out of our mill now, just bought an 03 plate FM12 ex Countrywide, he does a lot for B.E. Williams at Sennybridge; surprised you’ve not got any pics of his fleet, he now has two very smart Scanny 8-wheel bulkers plus the pair of ex-Stobart W&D’s on straw.

Hi gnasty gnome,
I’ve seen the ex Stobart pair of B E Williams quite a lot, might have posted a pic on this thread at some time.I was talking to one of the Presteigne drivers last week,he said the wood pellet job seems to be finished their now.The town has taken a couple of other big hits with job losses over the last few weeks with a factory closing with another looking likely to relocate,so the old mill site would provide some much needed jobs,if someone did get something going there.
As you say the location at Presteigne is not good,as with any of the towns this way,we are too far from the motorway for anyone to invest in any form of producing anything. They can’t get firms to come to Hereford,so Mid Wales stands no chance.
Cheers Dave.
