Weights/axles - a technical question

A four wheeled unit has a maximum train weight of 31 tonnes, and usually runs with a tandem axle trailer.

Is it legal to exceed this if you couple it up to a tri-axle trailer and run at at a gross weight of 34tonnes? I have my doubts and should know. Twenty years ago I would have known, sadly no longer.

A suitably plated 2 axle unit can run up to 40 tons GTW with a suitable tri axle trailer. Not sure what the limit is with a tandem axle trailer though, but I think it’s 38t.

Paul

Depends on which band the unit has been taxed in as well
Two axled tractive unit articulated vehicles with 3 or more axled semi-trailer

Not over 31,000 kg Tax band A
Not over 34,000 kg Tax band C
Not over 38,000 kg Tax band E
Not over 44,000 kg Tax band G (says 44,000 kg, but 40,000 in reality)
The tax disc in the windscreen will specify the band the vehicle is taxed in.

thanks for that Joe I’ll have a look at the disc in the morning. The unit is one I’m using temporarily. I reckon it will be in band A but as it’s purely a tax question I’ll probably run with it. Not a long journey by any means. I’ll mull it over.

if it runs normally with a tandam axle trailer you should check thats its taxed to run with a tri axle.

mmm , would it say that on the disc?
By the above reckoning I think if it’s taxed in class c it will be road legal.
thanks anyway all for the input.
