This could make it difficult to discuss taking a short break, making short haul deliveries or even giving your TM short shrift when he asks why they were short by one pallet on your last drop…
Bloody hell! I can’t even use the word S H R I F T!!

There can be some smaller updates to follow on from the “big one” when it updates the maps. This is because some of the other stuff only works with a specific version of the map. As a result there may be one or two updates (including the map) first time around, after which the device appears to be up to date. However, when you connect it again it finds more updates (but these usually only take a minute or two).
Something that stumped me was that you need to plug directly into the unit and not the mount as you had to do with the 5150, it doesn’t work through the mount.

Good point - although not relevant for those who are seeing any sort of error message or “waiting for device” etc. If you connect it to the PC via the windscreen mount the TomTom will charge its battery but will not be “seen” by the PC as a device with which it can communicate.
Can’t get mine to update,my laptop has windows 7 on think it’s down to that not being a recent operating system, just won’t connect when I plug it in

Its alright, glad I didn’t pay close to £400 for it.The OS seems to be a tad slow for what is the flagship unit.
I sent back my TomTom Truck sat-nav (the old model) because of the slowness of the user interface. I got a Garmin (I’d already used Garmin car sat-navs) and I’m generally very satisfied with it.
I know I didn’t have a bad unit, because a company I worked for briefly used them, and they had the same problem. It’s not a problem with the car sat-navs, otherwise they’d not still be in business.
Huge map updates are a problem with all sat-navs, including the Garmin. They should really be updating them before selling them.

Noticed that on mine today, tried to update through the mount and nothing happening until I plugged in direct.
If today some of u are using ur trucker for the first time let us know how it performed,it will be a while before I can test mine properly cheers fellas
I have a trucker 5000…was reasonably ok until yesterday when it took me through an unsuitable for heavy goods area…i got through like but was really miffed…not impressed.
The sign was on a corner of 2 roads…my sat nav was showing straight on so persumed was the road to my left…when i got to the end th blue sign was there.
this morning had its first road use and it’s so so.
The sat nav is good lay out etc but it’s this “live traffic” that leaves a bit to be desired.
First job today, Glasgow-Dalkeith M8-city by pass jobs a good un
Anyway driving up the M8 and I notice the sat nav is wanting to take me off the M8 and up the M9, I know I haven’t been to Dalkeith in a while but I was sure it hasn’t changed sides of Edinburgh.
Had a look at the route it was taking me and it was wanting to go M9-A8 and back down to hermiston gate roundabout all because of a bit of congestion at the next slip road.
I just carried and as per a bit of congestion at the slip road but my estimated time of arrival never changed.
It seems a bit odd that it would divert me off the M8 to go through two busy roundabouts to by pass a slip road.
Seems like a lot more hassle than just sticking to the road and dealing with a little bit of congestion.
Might turn this feature off if I can.

Perhaps that is down to the route planning options, you will have to change it from, “Always take the fastest route” to "Ask me so i can choose, then it will give you the option to take the route or not, if you leave it, it wont change the route, there is also another option of “don’t ask me” but not tried that yet, and then their is the shortest and fastest route option, mines on fastest and I know some of the routes aren’t always the way you would plan on a map to go when there is a shorter way to go.
My traffic subscription expires in a couple of weeks, and can’t justify 44 quid per year to carry it on, being paid per hour I dont mind sitting in traffic I can’t see coming up on the satnav, where as if I can and know I can avoid it, I would.
I like it, but is there an option to use "my location " as a favourite or “place” instead of an address? Liked this feature on my old 5150.
UI takes some getting used to but seems to work well. Only thing that I’m finding an annoying is how obnoxious the favourites icons are on the map…

If you go to settings, then appearance, then display, there’s an option to change the size of text and buttons. I’ve changed mine to small and it makes your place icons a lot smaller. Obviously the text size is smaller too but I don’t find it that bad that I can’t read it.

Just taken mine for a short “test drive” in the car (but with the TomTom set to truck weights/dimensions) around some local roads to get a feel for it compared to my old 5150 (and its predecessor the 7000 truck - TomTom model numbers can be confusing…).I like the routing, especially as regards weight limits, which seems to be improved over the 5150. There are a couple of regular runs I do into that there Lunnon where the 5150 would route via some 7.5T limits, even though there are perfectly acceptable alternatives that do not involve such restrictions. This isn’t just a problem with map accuracy though - the restrictions in question are on the 5150’s maps (and it happily sounds an audible alert as you contravene them…), it just seems to ignore some of them for reasons that I have not been able to fathom.
Which brings me on to something that I find a little disappointing with the 6000 - the older 5150 and 7000 would sound a warning if you entered a weight restriction, even if you were driving without satnav guidance. The 6000 doesn’t appear to do this and I haven’t found any option in the Settings menu to make it do so.
Truck speed limits are now correctly displayed onscreen (unlike the earlier units which would display the car speed limits regardless of vehicle type selected) and the audible overspeed warnings activate at the truck limits. These audible warnings also appear to activate much more quickly - the 5150 would happily let you drive in excess of the posted limit for several seconds before sounding the warning, whereas now it triggers pretty much instantly.
Changing the vehicle dimensions (e.g. when swapping trailers) was a teeny bit long-winded on the 5150 as you had to go through the full set of screens one at a time (height, length, width, weight, hazmat and audible warnings) even if you only wanted to change the height. On the 6000 it’s all on one screen and you just select the one(s) you want to change, which is better. On the downside though there still appears to be no way to save a preset vehicle configuration to make swapping between vehicles/trailers even quicker. Dimensions also appear to be entered only in metres (even if you have chosen Imperial measures in the “Units” setting screen), which is a minor annoyance if your brain works in Imperial measures as mine does.
On the road, rerouting appears to work quickly enough on short journeys, although understandably it lags a bit on longer ones. Still appears quick enough for me though.
Screen display is nice and clear, with the traffic information displayed on a sidebar just like the 5150.
I would hope that some of these minor niggles might be addressed in future updates (as some things were with the 5150) but even if they are not, none of it is mission-critical. On the whole, I like it and feel that it is a definite improvement on the 5150.
Ffs !! …Do you have to start half an hour earlier in the morning to programme all these settings, limits etc into the ■■■■ thing.
I don’t think the Apollo missions to the ■■■■ moon had that much navigational guidance.
(Evil8B…I know I promised , but sometimes I just can not help myself, you know what I’m like .
)
After a late drive home last night, I recommend lowering the screen brightness on the night time mode to about 5%, or you loose your night vision and retena
All in all I am happy with it, though rerouting is slow but the 5010 was not lightening either.
Is there a quick mute button?
Found the mute
