There good units but a pain having to update sumut brand new out of the box!
It’s like a new phone or laptop, when new it’s hammered with all the updates it missed out on since it was manufactured due to storage and transport and the like.

Not updated mine yet, because of this new phone generation I don’t have a laptop that has anything newer than windows 7 on so the update won’t download…says need min windows 8.
There will be updates rolling in pretty much daily. You just need to pay attention to what the update is, as most of them will be tiny ones and they could be anywhere in the European map on there.
Plug it in once every week or two will more than cover you.

You should be able to get a free upgrade to Win10 providing your copy of Win7 isn’t moody.
I would just add to my earlier comment/review, having used the thing on the road for a couple of days now. The routing seems a little less closely tied to Motorways and A-roads than the earlier 5150. I always felt that the 5150 was fibbing when it said “you are still on the fastest route” when I knew ■■■■ well there was a sensible alternative that would easily lop 5 minutes off the journey time just by dropping off the trunk/A-roads for a short distance.
Although I’m still getting used to it, I find the search function easier to use than the old version, especially where POIs are involved. It just seems to flow more naturally.
Grumbles:
There is no immediate view of the battery/power/charge status without calling up menus etc. The old one had a coloured LED in the power button which showed when the battery was charging/charged and an on-screen icon showing battery charge all the time it was running without external power.
There is a pause after telling it to calculate a route, during which time the vehicle weights/dimensions are displayed, giving you a chance to change them if necessary. Although it’s only a few seconds, it feels like longer and annoyingly the thing won’t respond to any input while it does its stuff, and (briefly) gives the impression that it has locked up/stopped responding.
The default night-time screen brightness is still a bit too bright for my eyes. I’ve turned it down to minimum and will give it another go tomorrow. Although it switches from night-time to day-time colours and brightness automatically, it doesn’t appear to adjust brightness for dull/low light - as a result, it is (again, to my eyes) a tad too bright when it first changes from night mode to day mode.
On the whole, I am pleased with it. If I’d paid the full £420 as a first-time purchase I would have been (just about) happy. I’m not convinced it would have been worthwhile upgrading from my old 5150 at that price (although over time that lifetime Traffic subscription would have pretty much paid for itself, and the 5150 still has significant resale value). But for 150 quid (with the possibility of a £50 cashback from TomTom) it was a no-brainer.

The window of opportunity for free upgrades to Win10 has closed.
There is little point in checking for updates on the TomTom every couple of weeks. Map updates happen four times a year. Significant updates to the OS are less frequent than that. Mapshare updates are more frequent, but significant amendments are incorporated in the quarterly map updates anyway. TomTom send you email reminders when they update the maps - I’d suggest only bothering to plug the thing in when you get one of those.

Thanks but the deadline was July '16 for the free upgrade,I don’t think I’ve switched my laptop on for a year prior to the other day!!
The father in law has a new laptop with windows 10 on so will be borrowing that to sort it.
Oh arse. Sorry about the useless advice then!
As soon as I saw “free upgrade” come up on my laptop I jumped on it like a cat on a loose shoelace Didn’t realise it was time sensitive.

We could just post when a map update is due on the forum
My win7 on my pc is legit. And the only reason it’s dodgy on my laptop is because it doesn’t have a cd drive. Tried to do a restore on it and it failed from the USB stick. By which time the OS had been wiped

Not all speed limits are correct mate, it will tell you on some roads the limit is 40 when the signs are saying 50…Glad you ‘sort of’ like it!
Yes - been seeing that a fair bit over the past couple of days. Still, I’d rather have it bleating (incorrectly) that I am exceeding a limit when I’m not than the alternative of having it remain silent when I am exceeding the limit!
Another major improvement over the 5150 - what used to be called “Itinerary Planning” (i.e. multi-drop routing). The 5150 was atrocious in this area and didn’t really do it at all. With the 6000 I can easily enter all the day’s drops at the start of the shift, have a look at the route on-screen and simply re-order things as I see fit. On the road, it gives me an arrival time for each drop, and automatically ticks each one off the list as I get to it. The re-ordering screen is particularly neat - It shows all the drops on a map and you simply tap them in the order you want to do them.
I’m also finding the traffic info (and especially the automatic re-routing to minimise delays) to be even better than it was on the 5150. The earlier unit would correctly identify traffic jams but was a bit reluctant to offer an alternative route that strayed off the Motorways and trunk roads. Fine if you were familiar with the local roads and had your own favourite shortcuts (it would allow you to see what the traffic was like on those roads before you made your decision) but not so good otherwise. This morning the 6000 successfully routed me via some B-roads in Nottingham to avoid some 10-15 minute delays on the main Ring Road and arrive at my delivery point at Queens Medical Centre only a minute or two later than originally estimated.
I am liking the new unit more and more
One thing that I like about it compared to the 5150 is that it doesn’t tell me to keep right at every third motorway junction, it’s also much faster to set up a route. I’ve been in Scotland today and it seems to have the lower speed limits on.
