This is why the industry is fucked!

As a child we had nothing. Christmas was a chocolate orange and a book if I was lucky. All my clothes were hand me downs or from a charity shop. We had no games consoles, computers, bikes… we were poor, properly poor. My dad worked from 7 til 5 six days a week just to pay the bills.
But it didn’t matter, my parents loved me, Fed me… that’s all that mattered.

You have no clue what my life was like… this is why I’m quite happy with £400 a week. Cos when you come from nothing, anything is a blessing.

The stupid thing is, because I came from nothing and had nothing, it made me very careful.

It would be worth taking a low wage from a firm that you ‘‘married into’’ mate, in a few years you’ll end up owning it. :bulb:
Then your Father in law will no longer have to thrash you t’ sleep wi his belt.

The other way you fight this is by not using POA, but by having an agreement for stand down pay for hours payback in place.

Let them pile the 15 hour days on, don’t use POA and only book the standard minimal breaks, you’ll end up with between an extra 2 and 4 weeks paid holiday a year.
There’s always another way to fight these shyters.

Multi drop pallet type work has to be the very worse work going now, i did a bit for the odd few days for the local big pallet system operator in my home town on my last agency stint, how the ignoramus’ behind the counter haven’t been ejected through the window without opening it first i do not know, plus the pay is crap, yet they still have some thoroughly decent drivers (shining among the dross) and i can’t get me head round how they keep 'em.

Just an update, as was mentioned earlier in the thread it’s Bannisters.
They’ve opened a depot in Scunthorpe and already have 10 drivers foolish enough to fall for their ■■■■■■■■ false promises and their appallingly low wages, I had them sussed on the first day and refused to work a second day, I wont be increasing on their wish list of thirty trucks at this depot.
£20 a night out and flatly refuse to pay any parking, insisting that all drivers park in laybys or industrial estates.

I’m pleased I’m out of it, I’ve been in this industry for just short of 40 years now, although I can’t afford to retire I can afford to take it easier and personal pride will not allow me to work for peanuts.

£20K a year doing this job■■? Personally wouldnt get out of bed for that. That sort of wage for the average person with the usual bills to pay would leave nothing spare…MickeyD’s would pay more… :stuck_out_tongue:

Depends on where you’re coming from. I make just over £15k a year before tax in my non driving job mind. If I earned £20k it’d feel like a decent step up. One of the reasons I’m getting into trucking and away from what I do now is that I’ll earn more.

Someone asked about my hours.
Yesterday started at 7.30 am got back to the yard about 16.40

Today started at 7.30am, it’s now 12.37 and I’m at home already. Got back to the yard around 11.50 but was fiddling with my car for a bit before I left.

That’s the way it goes. Sometimes I’m late, sometimes im not. More often not.

An you can do whatever maths you like, I know what I earn, I know what my parents had (my dad was on about £250 a week if I recall). I know how we lived and all the things I didn’t have. My first ever games console was a ps2 my wife bought me for my birthday once. My first bike was actually bought by my father in law so I could get to work as he was getting fed up of picking me up each morning.

My wife earns a little bit less than me but does more hours overall.

That’s the difference with family business, it’s not all about money.
I can ring up and say I’m having the day off tomorrow, and that’s that. If I need to be home early for any reason, I can be. I choose what work I do on what day to suit me, not to suit someone sitting in an office.

I had 6 months off a few years back due to injury. Still got paid in full… where else do you get that kind of perk?
My mobile phone and bill is paid for, my fuel is paid for , my work clothes are paid for, sometimes even my lunch in paid for.
I also have use of any of the vehicles for personal use when I need them, comes in handy when needing to shift large stuff. Dont need to ask, I have the keys, just take them out when I need to.

I do feel sorry for all those who have to overnight in some ■■■■■■ msa, even if you do earn double what I do, I wouldn’t change it for the world.

You being happy with your lot is what matters.

Never mind anyone else, if they can’t better themselves that’s their issue. Why some people think someone who is happy should change because someone else isn’t and said happy person is then being Jack is baffling.

So you don’t actually pay out for what most other drivers would have to pay out for…hence why your wage of £400 seems like enough for you to live on…the reality is that if you had to pay those expenses yourself, you would find that £400 isn’t that great of a wage for a working man.

Out of interest…is you, or your wife, a director in this family run business?

No I’m just an employee, wife isn’t in the company at all.

Sounds like he’s on a cushy little number,to me.
School hours…for 400 in the bank.
There’ll be day men on here, busting a bollock for 450

Your story is pretty moving when the full info comes out. I once had a friend at school who was poor, he always had a school uniform that was either hand me down or bought from the second hand shop. I remember going to his house and he was eating one of those fray bentos pies in a tin for his tea. I used to call him “tiny tim” from Dickens “a Christmas carol”. Any way he has turned out a bit different now as he runs a very successful clothing business, he sells second hand clothes although they are now re named as retro clothing. Something about poor people that seem to do well in life. Any way good luck to you if you are happy with what you have.

Spot on.

IMO If you’re happy with your lot, crack on. If you’re not, do something about it.

If you recalculate that 15 hour £111 day at 8 basic plus 7 at time and a half it’s more like £6 p/h :open_mouth:

£111 + £20 = £131 divided by 24 hours = £5.45 per hour that you were away from home . And nothing added for running in .And the tax man needs his cut as well .

Think about that .

What an asinine post. Think about this: How many trampers get paid 24hr every day?

The answer is none, before you over-tax yourself.

Well lad put it like this
every other sod that goes out to work leaves at a time in the morning , travels to work , works his 8/10/12 hour shift , and then travels home .
1 hour travel to work
10 hours at work
1 hour home
= 12 hours
lets say a job paying £9 per hour means our hero is earning £90 a day and has been out of the house and away from his family .
for each and every hour he’s been away he (or she ) has been compensated by the amount of £7.50 per hour out of the house - still with me ?
All Ive done is take that on for a driver who does nights out - amount paid for hours out of the house - its not a hard concept to grasp, which parts are you having trouble with ?

There are 24 hours in every day , you earn so much a day , divide that amount by 24 and see what your true hourly rate is . Sometimes you need to wake up and give yourself a reality check V8’s and bling don’t cut it . Money earned devided by time away lets you know what your worth - you might not like the answer but its the true rate per hour .

I agree. When I read his story, I don’t even think the word poor applies either, food on the table, parents who worked their arse off to keep things going, maintaining a semblance of family life, must be familiar to many here, being a child of the 50s 60s and early 70s it’s very recognisable to me. I say crack on mate, but at the same time think of others, and try not to ‘carve the job up for those that follow’ but enjoy your life, you only get one go!

Including time off working out an hourly rate of pay would have 90% of the population earning well below the minimum wage. No one no matter the industry works out their hourly rate from the time they leave their house. Someone on a fixed daily rate would work out their hourly rate by dividing that by the number of hours actually worked, NOT by 24… :stuck_out_tongue:

Indeed AndrewG, dividing your top line by the number of hours actually worked (factoring in weekend, bank hol, night rates etc as appropriate) is the only way to give you a mean average hourly rate to compare wages.

I suppose if someone wanted to be pedantic, or convince themselves one way or the other, then one could consider night out money as pittance security pay, personally i always spent most or more of my night out money getting away from the bloody vehicle so i didn’t become part of the sodding machine, so i learned long ago never to include night out pay in my wages.

I think it was better for those of us who used to get the NO pay in cash (still do where i work for those who night out), i rather think the more unscrupulous employers found they could hoodwink drivers by sticking NO pay on the pay slip, giving the impression of a higher take home figure, it seems to work too cos so many include NO pay when quoting nett pay.
