Own Account Driver:
Ok, for those that, for some reason, think ‘any vehicle’ on a sign means something different to the normal interpretation of the phrase any vehicle.
What was the reason why it was decided to no longer allow coaches in the outside lane in 1996?
national express trying to overtake me at 38,000 tonne doing 98 mph in the middle lane! one crashed with 52 people on board and I don’t think their bosses were too happy with a picture in the central reservation with fatalities on board and no I didn’t have a speed limiter retrospectively fitted till June that year and I wasn’t working for anyone from Ulster
I thought the coach ban in the third lane came in well before National Express went through their ‘drunk driver crashes coach’ phase. That one where one of them tipped a double-decker over at 60mph on the M25/M4 sliproad was terrible if I recall rightly, and the reason why they don’t run double-decker coaches any more.
One of them also went over in Newport Pagnell services around the same time I think.
The one at Pagnell was because the driver overtook a lorry, pulling back in past the 100 yard marker, then trying to do the bend at about 55mph, and lost out to the high kerb
Well today has been one of the most surprising days of my LIFE.
Firstly I have had my gallbladder removed and got to go home the same day !!!
And I have a definitive answer to the original question. It’s in writing from the PNLD
(Police national legal dept). If there is no width or weight limit it is perfectly acceptable to use lane 3 in this instance !
I cannot do a screen capture as it won’t allow it though. I will try to be devious.
No funny replies please as laughing hurts like hell!!!
So who is as surprise as me that they replied so quick
Coaches were banned from the outside lane after they were fitted with limiters and it was decided they were potentially too slow to mix with fast moving traffic - the same reason lorries and cars with trailers are also banned.
In roadworks all traffic is effectively speed limited to 50 or 40mph so the risk isn’t there with ordinarily slower moving vehicles travelling in the outside lane so any vehicle means, as it says, any vehicle.

mucker85:
Drove up the M1 this morning. 3rd lane has a 2M 6’6 width limit.
.
Correct
… And the reason for that is because through the roadworks :
Lane 1 is 3.25 mtrs wide
Lane 2 is 3.0 mtrs wide
&
Lane 3 is 2.75 mtrs wide.
.
Hence reduced width restriction.
Not much wiggle room there eh yoof
…
As for the right hand lane on multi lane Motorways >>> the clue is in the Highway Code . bladder bladder bladder .
the agency gave me afew days off and I went home to Romania to see my family
( that was a joke unlike this post )
wow…yes wow lots of response

can all the other responders who questioned my sanity send their sincere apologies
anyway I still potter down southbound 3 rd lane when its empty and 1 and 2 are jammed and northbound up to about jc 29a north of this they are moving the lanes around now and there is a width restriction in place
and we all know that would now be illegal to go in third lane there

First off I’d like to wish you a speedy recovery from your operation.
Secondly, wow you got a reply and wow it was so quick.
Thirdly, wow I never expected that answer. Did they give a reason as to why the laws are relaxed in this instance?
extrucker:
Even though it’s a roadworks section, it is still classified as a motorway so I would assume that you are still committing the same offence as using outside lane when not in roadworks. Very few roadworks do not have a width restriction for outside lane.
Several years ago a truck overturned in the roadworks M1 J8-9 and during the de-brief, the works contractor tried to state that it wasn’t motorway because it was inside roadworks. The Police Inspector immediately challenged this and stated very categorically that it is still a motorway with motorway regulations.
In the road works they sometimes say ANY VEHICLE. surly that says it all after all how many vehicles that can use lane 3 actually exceed 6ft 6

PNLD is Police National Legal Database, not Dept.
Can you post the advice / wording they have sent you as an Motorway cop I’m curious as to what part of Motorway Regs they are looking at.
