The pays crap but it's good kit

A set of wheel trims and curtains does not enhance the value of a truck. And that’s because it all comes off when I get a new one. Why is everyone under the impression that whatever we buy has to be left on the motor when it’s sold? :open_mouth:

If the boss wants his truck cleaned and polished, he can supply the materials and pay me by the hour to do so, exactly like the boss at the used car lot I worked at did for his cars.

I will not be the bellend who sets the precedent of working for nothing and getting the boss expecting everyone to do it.

It’s morally, and probably legally the equivalent of tipping on break, it’s certainly work, as it’s maintaining the company’s truck, and needs recording and paying as such.

Accessories, if they’re mine and I can move them to the next truck, fine, that’s like a mechanic’s tools, if not, then that’s like me upgrading the workshop compressor, and forget it!

Trucks we have at work the drivers who look after them the best are the ones who have added what some call tat. The ones who have the attitude of someone else’s truck, these ones tend to be in a bit of a state, filthy inside and out, mirror covers missing, damages bumpers mud guards etc…

That isn’t always the case though is it. There are plenty of guys that look after their motors without looking like they are sponsored by ‘All Ride’

I can’t speak for your co but maybe in such a case the pay is crap, the guys want a pay raise, and the others that are showing their boss that they are overpaid to the extent that they are upgrading the firms motors are antagonising the rest to the point where they don’t give a ■■■■ any longer…speaking from such an experience in the past.

Well I hope you don’t drive anything better than a mini metro, you wouldn’t want your boss thinking he pays you too much :unamused:

I’m beginning to think you are stalking me now Wheeltrimboy, I thought we were done.

No stalking here, just debating. Like you said, you put the comments out there for people to debate

To be honest people get to hung up on everyone else’s business if you as a driver are happy then stuff everyone else, and all this decent lorry equals crap pay doesn’t seem to hold up in most cases. Changed jobs last October went from a basic spec 12 plate R440 to an 08 R620 with a higher spec and a few extras gained about £10 extra a day, more time at home and an easier and more varied job. And couldn’t care less what anyone else is on or what they drive am happy with my wages and my standard of living yes we would all like higher wages but then maybe I should have done better at school and gone into a different profession, but the grass is not always greener my partner does a far more stressful job than me and takes home two thirds of my wage so don’t assume that there is big bucks to be made elsewhere without extra responsibility and the pressures that go with that.

I don’t understand why so many hauliers today think nothing of wasting fuel/fresh air collections/filling up at MSAs charging a massive premium - whilst penny pinching over the hourly rate for only a handful of drivers that work there, and clipping people signing on/off duty at both ends for 15 minutes and stuff like that.

It’s an illusion that “the payroll is the biggest overhead that has to be gotten down” like Osbourne’s argument about the deficit. Makes it sound like companies hold their staff in utter contempt, and the wages paid near minimum wage are a reflection of that contempt. “We’d pay you £5ph or less - if we could get away with it” one hears in mainly the safe tory seat areas up and down the country…

If firms are so close to the knuckle that they’d go bust if someone accidentally drops a whole bog roll down the loo - then quite frankly, they are not worthy to be called “businesses”. :imp:

I wonder what this Yank XPO firm will do with the Nobbies yards… Will they jump at the chance to pick up the contracts of a whole bunch of drivers on crap pay - OR - be the proverbial “new broom” and bring an entirely new business model to the UK thus enabling them to compete properly in what is supposed to be a “recovering” economy after all…

Imagine what could happen if a serious recruitment drive at superior wages were offerered - instead of “reliance on agencies” to fill any staff gap they might get in a growing marketplace?
The full timers at Nobbies, having doffed the poor pay and being “red shirts” for so long - would jump at the chance to now be working at such a “new broom” outfit eh? - Hey presto! - Instant “good relations with the shop floor” for the new high command!

Miracles do occasionally happen. Engineered genius takes a bit longer. :bulb:

Let it go man ffs  I seem to have hit a raw nerve eh?
Just for the record I reckon my boss will be ok about spending my pay on MY car, but I reckon he would get a bit spooked if I offered to pay for a set of new alloys for his Jag…at a 10er a week off my pay

How many times is this subject going to be debated ? live and let live chaps if someone wants to tart there truck up what’s your problem ? if its not your thing then don’t do it spend your money as you want but let other people spend there’s the way they want

Have you ever heard the expression - they’re not with us ? … Trucking used to be a manly pastime, but now everyone gets effeminised (is that a word) by the frilly curtain brigade. Then they wonder why drivers prefer to pee up the wheels rather than use the toilets… :open_mouth:

I think it just comes down to how people are in general. You get home owners who take pride in their house, nice flowers in the garden etc etc and those who just don’t give a stuff about cleaning and looking after stuff.

not being one who bothers about accessories have seen some smart lorries with and without bling at the end of the day its the drivers choice. also worked for a company on the same rates for 2 years i asked him about a rise only to be told he had spent x amount on a new lorry-should have seen his face when i handed him the keys and asked for the oldest lorry in the fleet

I loved my job as a lorry driver, but I wanted the best wages I could get. If you want the nice things in life, you got to have the money.

I must admit if I see a nicely kitted out truck I think the driver is a good one (apart from tippers obviously).

Nothing wrong with it , hourses for courses, each to their own etc…

Personaly I usually buy stuff I can take with me if I leave or change vehicle, with the exception of a mattress upgrade as being a box jockey I spend most of my time asleep anyway so its a good investment.

Wouldnt buy those ■■■■■■■■■■ frillies though as thats just gay, nothing wrong with gays of course (think my boyfriends one) just they can be a pain in the ■■■ at times with their incessant mincing about and tank polishing shenanigans.

Definitely horses for courses, if you live in it then it makes sense for some creature comforts (not those Dipper Dave that’s still illegal I believe). If you drive a day cabbed tipper on locals, in and out of the cab driving plant etc like I do then shiny stuff and polish is pointless.

I saw a guy the other night parked up for the night outside Doug’s Diner at Penrith with a tipper. He was on his hands and knees with a white marker jobby going over the lettering on his tyres :unamused: , one word sprang to mind…'WHY?
Not just for the pure pointlessness of it, but he must go in some ■■■■ holes with a tipper that would just ■■■■ it up anyway.

Any boss who looks at some wheel trims and concludes he’s overpaying his drivers isnt one worth working for in my experience.

Why not? Maybe its a way of unwinding. I read books. Some do crosswords. Others play games on their phone. Lots of things could be perceived as pointless, doesn’t mean they are. When I was younger and had a truck without side skirts I used to find sitting on a stool in the sunshine polishing my tanks an enjoyable way to unwind and stop thinking. Each to their own
