Hi all, My name is Mick Tyson and I worked for Bradys out of the Ellesmere Port depot then out of Northwich ,up to the time that Bradys closed down… I remember they asked some of us to run on Sunday of that week ( them knowing the firm was closing ). Got a phone call returning north from Tilbury to take rig straight up to Barrow depot… Arrived there to find most of the Northwich drivers including the ones who came from other areas already there… We were informed the company had gone into administration, to empty our cabs and were run back to Northwich in Minibuses and taxis… Never did get paid for that last weeks work… Saw Tarbie a few years back and I keep in touch with Dave Rankin. There are lots of Brady pics on the ■■■■■■■ Hauliers section …
Hello
I was taking to a mate the other day who was saying that he’d heard recently that Brady’s are going to pack in completely.
Something to do with that loss of the Kimberly Clark warehousing contract to a company called Wicks?
Can anyone tell me if this is true?
Kindest regards
CG
Hi, I’ve got VEO 401T, I’m trying to find out some history on it, I was talking to some one and they said it could be an ex bradys truck and I’ve sin there is a photo of VEO 400T so I’m guessing mine was!! Can any one tell me a bit more about it or have any photos of it??
Thanks

I didn’t realise you had any mates “CG”,
I prefer to remember Bradys when they were in their “hay-day” and are not, now, the subject of a “muck raking” gossip excercise by a cretin who doesn’t know the first thing about road transport and probably never will !! This is a classic shot of a Brady Comet that has definitely seen better days and is,by the looks of it,at the end of it’s career on the Brady fleet, well at least as a road going revenue earner. However,it may well have gone on to serve a number of years as an internal shunter which in Bradys case would have been within the boundaries of the Borough of Barrow-in- Furness! This particular Comet was new into service on18-4-61 and it was retired (leagally) on31-5-71 so it worked hard, bloody hard, for ten years which must put it in line for some sort of long service award as far as the longevity of Brady motors went !! Cheers Bewick.
Cracking shot Dennis. Rare to see a battle worn Leyland of Bradys. Altho as you say it would have had a hard life but itd still be in good condition as regards to maintenance. Wicks has taken the contract of reel storage from Bradys as he already had the contract to take waste away. The warehouses at Bradys have been demolished and the rumour is it is going to be developed into houses. Wicks is now looking to cut the contract short coz hes not making money out of it. Could be because Brady provided 24 hour a day service and Wicks only provides 12 hours service. Im sure if he got rid of his Bentley he would be making money

I’ve no idea who Wicks are Steve, sounds like they have “poked” into something they know nothing about, come to think of it wern’t they dealers in secondhand sacks or similar years ago (Frank might know?),Oh! and I bought a Roller when I was 29 but couldn’t bring myself to drive about in it so I sold it and got a 450SEL Merc which didn’t get up my customers nostrils one bit ,but the Silver Shadow would have done
By the way,now we are on about fancy cars,I recall one day outside Bradys yard in Duke street(circa 66’67) Billy Athersmith was parked in his Bentley,Jake was in the passenger seat and the Big’un was sat in the middle of the backseat with his arms foleded (?) like “Big chief sitting bull”,dunno what they were discussing but it was certainly something heavy at the time
Whoever these “lightweight” businessmen that populate Barrow now have nothing on the Bradys and Athersmiths of yesteryear, they were probably still going round farms buying old sacks etc at that time
Cheers Dennis.
That could be the dad of David Wicks who runs it now I think Dennis. David Wicks lives at the farm just over Duddon Bridge. There were a few people round here who werent happy when Bradys were shafted like they were. I wouldnt want to make any comment on Mr Wicks pesonally as I could be seen as biased, concerning the innacurate roumours he has curculated on how Bob Brady kept the work as long as he did through bribing one of my Uncles who used to work at Kimberly Clark!
To be honest Bob was more than happy to get rid. He must be early 60s now and selling the land for development will mean he has a nice retirement fund.

I don’t know where, or from who,you got the notion that the Brady fleet of old was well maintained Steve ? They weren’t,the only time they saw the workshop was when they broke down then they were repaired and put back to work !!Regular maintainence was never one of Bradys strong points, well what I saw of it when I was was there it definitely wasn’t !
Dennis.
Your right about the maintenance Dennis Also the comet driver nearly all ways got the multi drop work like 6 drops London on a Thursday night probable 3closing dates .problaly as meany pick ups comming back . Also the older comets where vacuum brakes not the best with 16 to on the back. PS don’t remember any comet,s used for shunting park up and cannibalise. Then end up at Walsh & Derdren .By the way the reg of one comet was GEO 1 that number now worth thousands
