I bet the Big’un and Jake thought they’d won the Lottery when they got the chance to buy Furness Tpt Frank,Jack told me that Sammy wanted Athersmiths to buy it out but Harold and Alf couldn’t make the decision until Billy came back from his winter hols,so he offered the firm to Bradys and they “took his arm off” !!A 6 vehicle “A” licence was too good to turn down with a Gold Plated customer like Vickers in the early 60’s.Apart from Ronnie Lomas who were the other drivers on Furness Tpt at that time. Also how many motors and drivers did they get when Hauliers sold out ? Cheers Dennis.. Dennis Bradys never did pig ion they sometime do small
Castings for a foundry in Iornworks Rd called Little & Angus Also don’t mention oxygen cylinders I often got lumberd
with that job every back St garage in Lancashire at that time with an artic .Did you ever get the coal job (cwt) bags
With old Ford tipper Like you say the Big un like me Ha Ha. Ok mate Frank
Dennis
Furness Tpt drivers Terrance Morgan (Sammy,s Son) Bill Harris George Whitelock driver from Blackpool called SandY ■■?

Chinese 6. Flat. Ok Mate FrankThanks for that gen Frank, interesting! I remember the Albion ( ex Haliers) they just ran it in it’s green colour,no signwriting,I recall it coming into the yard one day loaded with British oxygen bottles for delivery all over the area.I can also remember the ex Shaw AEC they stuck the second steer into, but the new axle wouldn’t turn as far,on full lock,as the fron’t one !! Did Bradys ever run out of the Iron Works when it was operating, maybe as subbies for Hauliers ? Cheers Dennis.

One and the same “OC” but I think you are exagerating on the top speed by a few “mile an hour”,however there wasn’t any other waggon and trailer combinations faster than the Brady Power Plus Octopus’s,fact.Cheers Bewick, former trailer mate on JEO 192.

Once I had passed the required standard that “The Maestro” had demanded he was quite relaxed and confident that he wouldn’t “wake up” in a wreck !! You have no idea the concentration it took a 19 year old youth to drive that Octopus and trailer in a manner that was beyond reproach from the “Powers that be”,Possy !! Great days, never to be forgotten, ever ! Cheers Dennis.

I see you’ve increased the speed from 100 to 120mph “OC”,are you sure that this “fictional” Leyland didn’t have the first Gas Turbine engine long before the Ergo cabbed motor was launched ? Oh! I forgot the Brady Octopus did have a “landing slot” at Heathrow when we ran to London !! Cheers Bewick.
hi b.had picture of engine in a glass cabnet somwhere/ serching loft .

Here’s one for you Dennis, must of been before you bought them out as sheeting not up to scratch on the fells.
Steve. Now your shaping Steve !! Some great shots there mate,IIRC they had an 8LXB Atki in the Athersmith fleet colours, may have had more than one ? I agree that is a manky shot of the K. Fell Mandator, sheeting and roping was never their strong point, until we got a grip of them !! Cheers Dennis.
Yes they had a 240 Atki on trunk Bill Inman drove it. also a Volvo 86. On trunk.
FrankWell did Bill Birkby carry on working at Bradys after they took Athersmiths over Frank? Cheers Dennis.
Yes Dennis Bill did come over to Bradys as a tramper driver then about 10 years ■■? Before he
Retired he came on night with me.And in my book a 100 % profecinal H G V driver poor feller
Died about 3 to 4 years after retiring did you no he had worked for Bradys in there errly days
Bet he could have told some tails on here. Ok mate FrankHe was on the Seddon 8 wheeler and trailer when I knew him, there’s a photo on another thread taken at the Three Sisters cafe at Markyate in '69,who was his mate?,he went to Blue Dart IIRC.I didn’t know Bill worked for Bradys in earlier years,I reckon he would think all his nightmares had returned when Bradys took over eh!! A lot of Athersmiths drivers jacked in at that time didn’t they ? Cheers dennis.
Hi fellas, I have just joined this forum and have been reading with interest the comments about Bill Birkby. You are right about him working for Brady’s before he worked for Athersmiths and when Brady’s bought them out he stayed with them until he retired. He sadly died 2 days after his 69th birthday. I have seen the photo’s of him and the seddon on another thread, I still have the originals. He loved his job and that old truck, i think, in particular Bills son

Same wagon same place different day.
Hi “ste sleds” I have just joined this forum and have noticed your quote above, it should read “same wagon same place SAME day”.This picture is a copy of a painting, of which I have the original.I can’t remember if the painter was the guy who took the photo or if Bill loaned it to someone else to paint, it was probably about 40 years ago.If you look at the black and white photo on the other thread you will see its taken from that one. It’s a brilliant painting but if you look very closely you’ll see a few differences
So what happened to the company and when did it close

Here’s a nice “period” shot for you Larry, one of the many Super Comets that Bradys ran in the late 50’s(Comets) and into the 60’s (Super Comets),coupled to a BTC 4 in-line this combination was the workhorse of the Brady fleet in the early years. If I was to guess this Super Comet, first reg 14/7/61 would have been loaded with British Cellophane from the Barrow factory or possibly from the other BCL factory at Brigdewater.I can recall that as a “teenager” working for Bradys when Eric and me happened to be in Barrow for the odd day I would do a bit of shunting up and down the Town and in and out of the various works/docks!!You see,Barrow Borough had their own police force,Chief Constable down to constables and “The Big’un” aka Bob Brady Snr,was on,how can I say, cough cough,on “excellent terms” with the “force” !! So a minor irritant like only been a teenager(who was a decent driver!!) didn’t stand in the way if the firm was stacked out with work and trailers needed shunting.I would get sent off to so and so with the comment "Don’t do “owt daft son,and no one will bother you”.However, one day I was followed into the yard by a copper on his motor bike,I had just brought a trailer out of the Steel Works and into the depot, apparently I had no no.plate on the trailer(what were they?),just as the young bobby was going to “set about” me the Big’un shot out the office and asked him what he was on with and he should have better things to do,and anyway he(The Big’un) would be seeing his “boss” that evening!!! so he had better get on his bike and “■■■■ off” ! I kid you not,I could have had the “book” thrown at me without doubt.Happy Days,Cheers Dennis.

Nice Photo Dennis another one of Brady,s finest wagons , Regards Larry.
When Bradeys closed down If I remember rightly there was quite a few of their trailers packed up in a field on the left as you joined the M 56 from the M 6, heading west ■■ Regards Larry.
Did they go bust(bankrupt) or sell out on good terms

This was long after those bendy toy 4 in liners, They were Tri Axle Curtainsiders, & some of them looked a bit rough, Mind the majority of their trailers that I saw working were fair tidy like, Regards Larry.
