Now your shaping Steve !! Some great shots there mate,IIRC they had an 8LXB Atki in the Athersmith fleet colours, may have had more than one ? I agree that is a manky shot of the K. Fell Mandator, sheeting and roping was never their strong point, until we got a grip of them !! Cheers Dennis.

Yes they had a 240 Atki on trunk Bill Inman drove it. also a Volvo 86. On trunk.
Frank

Well did Bill Birkby carry on working at Bradys after they took Athersmiths over Frank? Cheers Dennis.

He was on the Seddon 8 wheeler and trailer when I knew him, there’s a photo on another thread taken at the Three Sisters cafe at Markyate in '69,who was his mate?,he went to Blue Dart IIRC.I didn’t know Bill worked for Bradys in earlier years,I reckon he would think all his nightmares had returned when Bradys took over eh!! A lot of Athersmiths drivers jacked in at that time didn’t they ? Cheers dennis.

Continued.

Do you really think Bill would have allowed us lads that were there at the time to touch his load ? i.e.Croppers,G W Taylors ( Big Harold) and me,yes all the Kendal cowboys were there that night !!! You mention re sheeting and roping,I re-call that we had two or three “zealots” at one time that would couple their trailer up in the depot for next day and then proceed to undo everything and re-do it all again, and we employed some of the best shunters around IMHO,but after they’ed finished, just to “wind the buggers right up” we’d pop out the trffic office and say "change of plan, that trailers going on Trunk to-night,you now want Txxx for to-morrow " their face used to be a picture honest !! Happy days,Cheers Dennis.

I bet the Big’un and Jake thought they’d won the Lottery when they got the chance to buy Furness Tpt Frank,Jack told me that Sammy wanted Athersmiths to buy it out but Harold and Alf couldn’t make the decision until Billy came back from his winter hols,so he offered the firm to Bradys and they “took his arm off” !!A 6 vehicle “A” licence was too good to turn down with a Gold Plated customer like Vickers in the early 60’s.Apart from Ronnie Lomas who were the other drivers on Furness Tpt at that time. Also how many motors and drivers did they get when Hauliers sold out ? Cheers Dennis.

Thanks for that gen Frank, interesting! I remember the Albion ( ex Haliers) they just ran it in it’s green colour,no signwriting,I recall it coming into the yard one day loaded with British oxygen bottles for delivery all over the area.I can also remember the ex Shaw AEC they stuck the second steer into, but the new axle wouldn’t turn as far,on full lock,as the fron’t one !! Did Bradys ever run out of the Iron Works when it was operating, maybe as subbies for Hauliers ? Cheers Dennis.
