Before driving trucks for a living, I used to drive busses, and they’re obviously on a schedule.
Now, lets say you leave depot at 0515, by 0930 you’d be scheduled to have a 47 min break for which you’re not being paid.
To have this break, you’d obviously have to be at the change over point at 0930, so you make sure you are, even if that means driving like a ■■■■■■■ muppet.
Now, 0930 is just after rush hour, so from 0515 - 0730 or so, you’ve had a nice leisurely drive, but from 0730 - 0930 you’ve been driving like your pants are on fire.
Problem I found in busses, was, rather than carry on driving safely and leisurely, too many drivers would exceed the limit, miss people at bus stops etc, so when my bus was pulling in for changeover at 0940, they’d be asking where I was and having to cover the start of my 2nd part of the shift due to lack of break.
The times were impossible, but because drivers used to break the law and drive like maniacs, the company didn’t know that the times were impossible, so drivers actually were their own worst enemy and made the job harder than it had to be.
Now I drive trucks, no real schedule as such and I plod along at the speed limits, take my breaks when req’d etc, I did a run to lower Scotland the other day, and other drivers were telling me how quick then went over the A75 and asked me how quick I went… 40mph I said, that’s the limit (for most of it), they really couldn’t understand why I wasn’t doing 50+ when it’s perfectly safe to do so.
I told them that I was paid by the hour, didn’t get a massive wage at the end of the week and a £60 speeding fine would seriously eat into it, so why would I speed.
Some drivers really are our own worst enemy, racing round, tipping on breaks etc and then they make the law abiding drivers look like they’re dragging it out, when they’re just sticking to the law.
Oh, also I get docked 1hr per day for my dinner, so I take 1hr per day, people have said why not take 45 mins or whatever, and I say why would I work for nothing? If they dock me 45, I’ll take 45, but if they dock me 1hr, I’ll take an hour.
