Was shown some photos of very badly maintained lorries from around the world, you know the sort, Asian, African etc with no cab, just a seat on the chassis etc - then was told “thats why we need to have a defect book”
my favourite question from last Saturday was “if we just have 15 mins at 10 o,clock and 30 mins for lunch we can get away for 1pm, is that all right with everybody?” you can guess how the replies went

All the guys we had needed to send a fax from our building with all the drivers details when the session started and again with all the finished documents when it finished to show how long the session was.
The straps on the load winding of legs and carrying your CDL with you comes from the rest of Europe. Last time I was over there the krauts were pretty hot on it but not heard of it in the UK. O and the frogs were hot on the 15 mins pre trip inspection

i think thats if its at a workplace, we where at a training centre that shall remain nameless, i,ve done all 5 at the same place and we got a flyer everyday , although i think last saturday was exceptional as most other times it was just by 30-40 minutes

Yeah, was at our depot, no cheating the system for anyone there, a full 7 hours of mind numbing tedium

According to the DCPC trainer I had yesterday (TM BTW) that the WTD says you have to have 20 minutes break within the first 6 hours of your shift. We all said, Bollicks! It’s 15 and everyone knows that.
He said that we had been told wrong.
However, this was told to us at 1530 and I had pretty much switched off at 0930 so I didn’t really care!
I got told that too ! Were we on the same course ?

For The Working Time Regulations 1998 (general WTD) you should have a break of at-least 20 minutes if your daily working time is over 6 hours.
Your trainer/trainers may have been reading the wrong working time regulations
tachograph:
‘… Your trainer/trainers may have been reading the wrong working time regulations …’
Which suggests that the adage “if you can’t do it, train it” is as good today as ever
Surely as drivers they’d be clocking up (yawn) infringement after infringement
The poor (moral starved?) fools often mimic the practically clueless Lib/Lab/Green/Conster politico’s also on the dumb-perch of being ignorant of the inappropriacy of the undemocratic, ill-suited & time-wasting, Brussels-borne, DCPC shee-ite
To perfectly illustrate this fact & whilst idly chatting to a local Labour councillor the other day in the middle of town, we both saw a passing cabby chatting away on his hand-held mobile.
My laconically made point drew a blank from the poor puppet when I info’d him that ‘his lot’ were conniving to cane my industry by sitting in Brussels’ pocket whilst being content (even proud?) to liberalise every other highway user en-route
Thus, politicians are proven ignorant of the DCPC - which is both stupid and true
Bang on topic as usual then! Trainer never even mentioned mobile phones on mine because, as professional drivers, we wouldn’t dream of using one while driving.
Have you started yours then HK? Man I would love to be in one of those sessions.
To me the dcpc trainers are split into two camps
Those that have the right teaching quals but are not in the industry
Those that are in the industry such as LGV training schools who know the industry
From the various posts on this forum it seems that most mis-information is from the first camp with little or no errors from the second camp
Well I think the trainer should, at the very least have an HGV Licence, experience in the industry and a teaching qualification. If they have not then ask for your money back. You would not want a 5 year old taught by some of these guys.
Some people are brilliant at their job but dont have any teaching ability. Some are good teachers but tha’ts only usefull if you know what you are talking about.
Any industry that insists on periodic training to enable its workers to continue doing their job deserves no less.
I would image the big boys have decent trainers to do it in house but for the rest of us it’s pot luck.
I would have no problem if we were kept up to date with legislation and new tech but the at the moment each module seems to just repeat the same old crap in a differrent order.
Maybe some of you guys who are hanging up your keys should consider re-training as DCPC Trainers?
It all depends what’s being taught.
If I was doing a first aid course, it wouldn’t matter to me if the trainer could drive a truck or not…I’d want to know if he was a qualified first-aid trainer, paramedic or the like.
Likewise, with drivers hours, ideally you’d want someone from a legal background with a sound grounding in the legislation and case law…it wouldn’t matter if he/she had ever actually driven a truck: I’d be far more impressed by someone who regularly worked o the prosecution or defence of these cases.
Such a person would not come cheap…
Well, today the old “adblue is pig ■■■■” was mentioned by one driver with gusto. Except this time he’s delivered to a farm that keeps pigs to produce it.
I think he’s only driving until his cheque from Nigeria comes through the post.
Someone else was very adament about 30 mins after 6 hours. He’d been told so at the last two cpc sessions.
Fair enough if the whole day was first aid or tacho but it isnt. To me a trainer needs to have some kind of credibility to even begin getting peoples respect and attention. If someone stood up and said he was an engineer and was going to teach me how to drive economically I would want to know he could actually do it himself. Is that too much to ask for £60 on a Saturday?
I’m a DCPC trainer and I’ve got to admit I agree with most of these posts that the trainer should be knowledgeable and experienced in the areas he/she is delivering. Now I generally get good feed back and respect in my courses and I think that comes from my experience. I’m 34 with 14 years of driving experience, 4 yrs on busses and 10 on class 1 and now I also have a ops cpc for haulage an ops cpc for passengers transport I’m a DGSA and also ADR instructor. In the classroom this combination work and it frustrates me when jaupt stipulation for a trainer is subject knowledge only, this means you could of learnt the power point a week ago and now deliver it which is ( mind mi french ) a load of bullocks. That’s what I think and I feel sorry for you guys and ladys that have to sit through 7 hrs with someone that don’t know their stuff

Except, I still regularly hear from people with newly-acquired Cat C driving licences who haven’t been told they need to do Mods 2 & 4 to drive commercially or, even worse, have been told to go and do 35 hrs of training to ‘get’ their driver CPC.
Some of these LGV instructors can teach you how to pass the test quite well (left hand down, wait until you see the mark in the mirror etc), but know little else.

I did notice some scruffy looking get in a black polo shirt, was that you?
DVSA have released a big puff piece today to show how well JAUPT are auditing training providers but to be honest I would have little faith in how well JAUPT’s own staff are qualified to audit courses as they themselves are responsible for approving some exceptionally weak courses.
