Was an honest question Mr Dog… [emoji16]
Sure I see a post earlier about someone not being paid by them?
They can’t be a spotter surely as I’m sure things ain’t got that bad that they’d pay folks to watch wagons come an go, aswell as the lads they’ve paid to stand in reception all day aswell?
Do you have to wear the same jumpers as the lads in my picture, as I’m sorry but theres no way I’m wearing a v neck over my vest.
robroy:
They were originally a Carlisle only haulier, at that time they put more owner drivers and small co.s out of business than anything.
The ‘Green Death’ label started during that time.
They allegedly done one contract on a free haulage charge for storage basis, how can anybody compete with that? …incidentally they even [zb] ed that job up (again allegedlly).
It must be almost thirty years ago that a Scottish O/D loaded limestone at our quarry in Derbyshire and he was concerned because the gypsum plant in Scotland that he often hauled from was under threat from Stobarts taking over all the haulage. They had quoted one rate, wether it was a local run or a distance one down to Kent etc the rate was the same because they could make the money up on the long runs by backloading. He said that Stobart wasn’t too bothered about the haulage side making money because the storage side of the business more than made up for it, James Irlam had a similar idea apparently? Anyway I’m guessing the plan never happened at the gypsum plant but running a fleet and preparing to lose money on it never made any sense, even Tilcon/Tarmac/RMC etc when they ran their own fleets had to break even at least and they made their money selling the product itself but still needed reliable haulage to achieve that. That all went ■■■■ up eventually of course!
Pete.
Is that really all that different from supermarkets selling tins of beans for a penny? Have one product as a loss leader to get people through the door knowing you’ll more than make enough profit on other sales to cover the loss.

My local ■■■■ shop used the same tactics back in the day.
Used to put some smashers in the window, for like £3!!
■■■■■■■■ got ya hooked then, so in you’d go and boom your at the £10 a pop shelves.
I got banned for asking if they done gratis tissues, as I’d finished up just by looking at the cases.
Went back week later, got a refund on the £3 one, then bought identical one back for £2 out the used bin.
These firms think their so clever, but us council estate lads grew up knowing how to make our money work proper.
I hope they don’t do a ‘Thomas Cook’ and don’t leave drivers stranded but get them all home before the brown stinky hits the fan. It’s happened at a couple of companies over here, driver is merrily trucking away then stops for fuel to be told ‘sorry your company credit card is no good’, driver then calls the office to be told were not in business anymore so make your own way home.
There was talk a fair few years ago of Amazon buying XPO in the USA but Home Depot kicked off about it and said they wouldn’t use XPO to haul their stuff if it went ahead as it was a conflict of interest.
idrive:
I hear Amazon are looking to acquire their own logistics co…
Looks like that’s what their doing in the US, a yard full of new Amazon tractors.
It will happen here too.
Whether it will be an acquisition or start from scratch who knows.
I know for a fact that they have approached Hermes several times but been rebuffed.
Amazon are a disruptor, and extremely aggressive.
They don’t just want a slice of the pie, they want every last crumb and the plate it sits on too.
If I were a subbie I would not be putting all my eggs in the Amazon basket
