Stobart struggling haulier

The Black and Silver ones are used for Pirelli, the White ones will probably be Williams, and the Silver ones are Mercedes, I also believe they transport the FIA trailers round the F1 circuit as well.

Williams have their own trucks and run their own haulage with Mechs trained as drivers. Walking distance from me, know a few guys that work there and a mate knows the transport manager, asked him to find out if any jobs going but needed to have mechanic skills good enough to be travelling race crew and I dont :frowning: Easier to train a top notch race mech to drive a wagon than teach a wagon driver to race mech

It’s years since any F1 team, UK based at least, has had the race team members drive the trucks on a regular basis, and generally they weren’t mechanics, but normally guys who looked after tyres, fuel and other similar jobs, they were called “Truckies”, still are called that in the paddock and the teams still like them to have HGV licences.

Some got their licence through motorsport and other came from haulage and got into motorsport at lower levels and then got jobs in F1, however increasing numbers of fly away races, and the WTD finally put paid to them driving and working on the race team at the same time, so at first they used contractors, mostly drivers that had worked for them or other F1 teams in the past and had left the race teams, then Stobarts and other hauliers started to come in, I think I first saw them with Brawn GP in 2009.

However Williams might have a truck or 2 to move their historic cars around, this bit is run by Johnny Williams, with a few of the old mechs working on the cars from their glory days

Andrew Tinkler the former Stobart director, is busy trying to raise the money to buy the haulage side of the company.

They’ve been caught fiddling the books big time and we don’t even know the half of it yet as no one willing to sign off the overdue accounts so I reckon it’s goodnight Irene cos the banks are wanting their money back or else they will look for blood.

A takeover or buy ought would be a bad outcome I think as an apparent bunch of rate cutters have been able to write off a load of debt and thus be more sustainable but unfair competition.

Close em down I’d say and the drivers need not worry as all the goods will still need to be trucked and who else is going to drive those trucks.

On the other hand it might be a good time to get on permanent there on a good contract and then get TUPED.

Who knows at this point but one thing is for sure the dodgy Neil Woodford and other share holders are goosed on this one.

At the end of tday the same amount of goods will need moving. Overall, jobs shouldnt be lost.
Ive never worked for Stobbart, and dont have any particular view of them. Although they get a lot of stick for various reasons, they always pay their drivers at the end of the month don`t they? They may not be a perfect fit for all us, but any replacing them could be better, or a lot worse.

I had ten double deck trailers on for Tesco Primary with the best delivery on time record of any haulier pulling for them.

Lost the lot to Stobarts doing the job for carp money back at the start of the recession in 2009/2010.

They are a haulier playing at being a logistics company without the funds to do the job properly. Sod them.

They were originally a Carlisle only haulier, at that time they put more owner drivers and small co.s out of business than anything.
The ‘Green Death’ label started during that time.
They allegedly done one contract on a free haulage charge for storage basis, how can anybody compete with that? …incidentally they even ■■■■ ed that job up (again allegedlly).

Is that the fault of Stobbies though, or is it the fault of Tescos “ology rich” middle management obsessed with KPI’s coupled to zero awareness of old fashioned values such as service or loyalty?

They just go in with the lowest Quote to get the work then they carn’t understand how they don’t make a profit on the job. But some faceless investment fund will buy them out then it be back to normal.

No, market forces and all that but I don’t have to like them do I? It does wrankle me that they take these jobs on and then mess them up though.

Agreed. For bank bosses, it’s worth it to keep funding companies that sometimes go bankrupt, if it disciplines workers and allows them to sweat and improve returns from their other investments.

Here’s me proof…[emoji38]

The Hourly rates are fair when based against other firms from my research, but as for the hours all I can see is a basic 45, and I’d assume there is some night out allowance on top?

Sadly I don’t think I’m going to get the chance to be a paid mascot with em and see what rate that earns… [emoji106]

Be a shame to see the wagons go, as if nothing else their a part of haulage history, a time before things got as truly faceless and corporate as the are now [emoji57]

Anyone know any Good hauliers round Anglia, I’ve a list of ones I’m avoiding already [emoji38]

It must be almost thirty years ago that a Scottish O/D loaded limestone at our quarry in Derbyshire and he was concerned because the gypsum plant in Scotland that he often hauled from was under threat from Stobarts taking over all the haulage. They had quoted one rate, wether it was a local run or a distance one down to Kent etc the rate was the same because they could make the money up on the long runs by backloading. He said that Stobart wasn’t too bothered about the haulage side making money because the storage side of the business more than made up for it, James Irlam had a similar idea apparently? Anyway I’m guessing the plan never happened at the gypsum plant but running a fleet and preparing to lose money on it never made any sense, even Tilcon/Tarmac/RMC etc when they ran their own fleets had to break even at least and they made their money selling the product itself but still needed reliable haulage to achieve that. That all went ■■■■ up eventually of course! :unamused:

Pete.
