Stobart owner drivers

DS074:
Stobarts have been doing this for years, its nothing new. I remember seeing all the posters etc at their Wakefield depot 15 years ago asking for drivers who want to become owner drivers.

I’m sure there will be more to it than just stumping up £5k, but as Ady says, its his money, its his choice, so why not go for it?

PS Ady…if you need a CPC holder and relief driver PM me  ( I might even still have a few green shirts somewhere at the back of my wardrobe too  )

let me get up and running 1 st  ,but in time as i develop the buisness im sure ill find a position somewhere for you[ill need someone to run the trucks aas ill be in a tax haven most of year :wink]:

Wheel Nut:
No, you go for it ady1, as you say you have nothing to lose and you will make [zb] millions.

I was just trying to steer the others along and reminding them about the downsides and legal small print. but i can see you have it all worked out!

there beyond help wheelnut, there just going to stagger on through lifes highways and byways ,never amounting to anything, sad really, yes ive spent many hour with pen/paper/calculator and the sums seem to stack up,not going into this[if im allowed to blind, eyes fully open],onwards and upwards
n.b in time ill hope to put some money towards charaties/what old folks home are you in  ,maybe i could help with the fees

AlexWignall:
I was sucessfully self employed for five years and the best thing I ever did was put my cards in and get a full time job again.

If you can tell from my user name I’m not hiding behind the keypad on my phone crititising any future ESL owner driver.

I think if you are a canny small operator who is used to running a couple of lorries effectivley you might do pretty well out of this ESL deal.

Unfortunatly Ady1, after reading your posts that isn’t the impression you have given me. You sound just like every other ex driver who bought his own truck and failed miserably and you havn’t even got the keys for it yet. Funny how it’s never their fault when it all goes horribly wrong.

I wouldn’t say the 5k is all you would lose. How about the 80k you owe Scania and the cash you will owe for your trailer and the fuel you have used?

If I worked for ESL and I was considering this deal the last thing I would be doing would be posting the pros and cons of it on TNUK. I wish you luck Ady1 whatever you decide to do but remember the old saying

‘A fool and his money are easily parted’.

W

NO,theyve never mention paying for the truck 80k,theyve said as far as im aware its 5k upfront, they give you truck, gar work, gar good wage, obviously if the 5k became 80k :unamused: :unamused: ,then id not be doing it,5k wouldnt make a dent but 80k would.

And that last statement just proves how much of a fool you really are!

You can get a brand new Ford Focus for a payment of £189.99

So you’re not really an owner driver then? just a self employed worker.

In effect you will hand over 5k to ESL just to be able to control your own costs because I doubt you will be able to change your business plan if you find better work (even inside the ESL group).

Or in other words you’ll be handing 5k to ESL just to do your own job.

surely a pulp fiction quote would be better…

eds dead baby…eds dead

good for you ,if your happy with your life, job good luck to you,but just because i work w/ends doesnt mean its the end of any kind of life i can assure you, whilst your away in your truck all week not seeing kids/wife i get to see mine every day  ,not just on a sat/sun-mon-sun for me.as for you choose to be run ragged, other than picking the long runs/days, ive no choice in anything,im told to go to a+b and thats it,luckily that entails normally a big gap between drop and collection, but if next week someone decides to fill that gap then ill have to do it,but whilst they dont seem bothered/cant alter things ill make the best of what ive got.as for being run ragged passes the time quicker,i can assure you time flies as well when your fast asleep, also at end of day/week i dont need 2 days to recover from being run ragged,im well rested,
[/quote]
This^ Ady! If you go and “Pay” Stobart to work for them! You will be out all week! Infact! I guarantee you might even be out for longer periods than a week!
Don’t do it man!! :unamused: Are you saying you trust a Stobart Planner to keep you busy? If so! All the best mate! :open_mouth:

Wise words from the Prince of Darkness i think.
I thought about it for about 30 secs, chatted to the old man and his reply, well i cant repeat it on here but suffice to say,i’ll be staying as an employed tramper.

Sounds like good advice - By the way Jase you have a PM

Ady1

I think you need to read the BIG print again and when you can get your head around that, have a go at the small print! When you’ve read the small print, get someone to explain it to you properly because you will surely get your fingers burnt and your wallet emptied in a big way carrying on the way you’re going… :unamused:

Read all the advice on here and inwardly digest, then read it again! Take all the ‘contract’ details to a specialist and PAY them to look at it and advise you.

I’m sure you may make a living but I’m also sure that you won’t be buying a string of racehorses, sponsoring a rally team and flying a helicopter anytime soon!! You will get just enough work to keep you coming back for more…

Like I said previously, it sounds pretty much like the quarries have been doing for years. It suits some, it doesn’t suit others - personal choice at the end of the day but make sure you know ALL the facts and figures because once you sign on the dotted line they put the slip knot around your gentlemans vegetables and keep tugging, and there ain’t nothing you will be able to do about it.

It also changes people! Colleagues who you may have called firends for years, once they have a lot of finance to pay, won’t ■■■■ on you if you’re on fire! Its a sad fact and another one you ought to keep in mind… There is very little camaraderie when you have 100 small businesses all fighting for 75 loads…

Good luck with whatever you decide

Good luck to you Ady, I hope it works out for you. Do you need an O licence and a CPC then?

Only know what I’ve read about it on here, but if you see the way the USA ‘mega’ carriers.have gone ,they take on drivers then ‘persuade’ then to do a vehicle lease,‘fleece’ lease as its called, basically I think the firms make more out of the leasing of the vehicle than the movement of freight, not saying thats how this particular set up would be,but as many others have said on here,if it was worth doing, they wouldn’t be giving anyone else the opportunity,be keeping it for themselves?

The biggest benefit to Stobart with this is a sudden stop to vehicle damage, if there is any damage they will charge for it twice, once by contra and again by a workshop invoice for the reparation.

Added to that there will probably be penalties for any late deliveries and profits made on supplying fuel to the drivers.

Suppose the one plus for Ady is that he knows all the lads in the chill office who will be controlling him and I’m sure he’s had a word with them with regard to looking after him once he sets up. That’s a big plus point in my opinion and a fast start rather than just pitching up at the depot and starting from cold as it were.

Also i’d say the chill work is a better crack than the general. See if you can double shift it, if you’re not tramping it, this can make the difference between getting by and caning it in.

Let us know how it goes anyway once you’ve done your first few months.

Cor! look what dropped through my letterbox this morning. I have used quote marks just to separate the advert from my own comments.
