some operators realise this and treat their staff with respect allowing them to do their jobs without nick picking every second of their work,
Post a list please! I did the job from 1897 (Think that’s right) to 2010 and didn’t find one of those
Carryfast:
It depends on the definition of respect. In wartime we had to treat women as part of the nation’s workforce because we had no option. But sending women out to do a man’s job just seems silly and no good for anyone either the men left on the dole while the women do the work.Or the women who either compromise their domestic role in life of having raising a family then regret it later and the father saying that mum will be home late tonight or won’t be at home in the morning.Or suffer the health effects and reduced life expectancy which results from doing a man’s work.
Wow…
Double Wowzers…
Even taking into account a 1950’s view of the female of the species I think your way off CF.
Women have always been the stronger ■■■, just look at Theresa May sorting stuff out (them fork me shoes she was wearing at the conservative conference where divine).
But are women suitable for HGV driving jobs, well by experience and encounters with lady drivers I can say that they are not only up to the challenge but a match for any bloke.
Course I don’t want my wife to do it as who will cook my tea and who will I beat up when my footy team lose.
“Some of the facilities at service stations and depots where we deliver to can be awful. There’ll be one toilet for all drivers to use, and it won’t have been cleaned enough. It’s not nice for women to deal with that.”
So it’s ok for the fella’s to have facilities in poor state ■■

Ladies find it harder to ■■■■ up the wheels I guess…

I think Carryfast must be surrounded by meek obedient women. The women in my life from my mum to friends to work colleagues are some of the strongest people I’ve ever known, in more ways than one.
I’ve read enough of his posts to see that one coming.
I knew he had victorian views on women but still surprised to see it written down
Strange how you selectively had a go at my view of women being pushed into the industrial meat grinder but not Harry’s etc similar views regarding the maternity angle. As I said it all depends on the definition of respect in which I see my views, concerning keeping women out of the industrial wealth creating,or the military, meat grinder as no different to them being first off of a sinking ship. But yes I can see how that might not fit in with the weird present day PC agenda. While you might be interested to know that I know plenty of women who actually support my views IE they ain’t all raving feminists. While ironically you’ll probably, rightly, find them more prevalent among the immigrant communities.

I didn’t say that women aren’t great people.I said you wouldn’t send your mum up a ladder to fix the roof or do other risky or strenuous DIY jobs or fix the car while you did the hoovering and cooking. In addition to as I said if the family is on a sinking ship then its the wife and kids who get in the life boats first in and if the boat takes the father down with it tough.
CF, while I don’t want to put words in Harry’s mouth, he said he couldn’t afford to hire a woman of child bearing age to drive his one solitary truck in case that woman had a child leaving him to pay maternity. Unfair, but logical.
Whereas you seem to say that a woman shouldnt be employed over a man, because she might hurt herself… Distasteful, and old fashioned I’d say.

Why would you see anything ‘distasteful’ about the well founded instinct to be protective of women.
Or for that matter arguing against the logical conclusion of your ideas which turn men into house husbands,or part time shop assistants etc and taking on the maternal role, while women drive trucks etc for 12 hours + per day.

There’s nothing distasteful in being protective to women at all old chum. There is however everything distasteful in being patronising to women. If they want to work 12+ hours a day driving a truck, then let them, it’s their choice. Equally if a dude fancies staying at home to raise the kids, that’s fine too. Your views on women in the work place are just like your views on automatic gearboxes; outdated. You’re a dinosaur.
I don’t wish to chuck a cat amongst the pigeons CF but not every woman aspires to or is part of the atypical nuclear family.
Some ladies are quite happy to be self sufficient and don’t need a man, other ladies want a career behind the wheel, truck driving for all we moan about it is quite a good lifestyle, especially if you have a certain natural driving ability.
Some ladies don’t even like men and prefer to have a relationship with another lady. Which is great.
Women didn’t just burn their bras to get the vote, a whole new era of feminine power was born.

I wouldn’t send my mum anywhere as believe it or not she has a mind of her own and tends to make her own decisions. Maybe women thinking for themselves is an alien concept to you

It’s not an alien concept, it’s quite simple. You see, back in the day, before women were fitted with tachographs and speed limiters. Back when Real Men were unable to one-hit long Euro runs, despite being able to one-hit long Euro runs… depending on the pre-limiter speeds of course, and the roads too… women could fix the roof and strain themselves all over the show and none of the Real Men would be any the wiser, as they took a sensible 11hrs rest whilst not resting because they’re one-hitting, which is impossible, by the way, without driving at performance car speeds. Now that Real Men are basically just resting the entire time thanks to The Regime, they’re around to check women’s tachos and pick up on all the roof climbing and straining. Terrible situation!
Actually, my own Mum- 81 now- says that things were better in the 1960s, when the man went out to work, the woman stayed at home and raised the children, and a family could buy a house on just the man’s earnings. I don’t know if that makes her “old fashioned” but it does seem to make sense to me.
Regardless of whether you think women should or shouldn’t be driving trucks, The haulage industry need to stop looking for gimmicks to address the problem of lack of new recruits in the industry and instead of address the problems that cause people to leave the industry and why it’s so unattractive as a job, not only to women, but anybody.
To be honest Muckles me old mate, you don’t have to look much further than across the desk at the transport admin/management, thats where 90% of the issues originate for the disillusionment in the job.
Thats why small companies who appreciate their staff, and possibly still know what makes them tick, are able to retain happy enthusiastic crews even if they can’t match the salaries at some of the other types.
And sometimes the big money just isn’t worth it if it means being trained down to lowest common denominator level in a dumbed down environment.
Every top tier driver i’ve known has taken a pride in their work, you take that away and you destroy that driver slowly.

The irony is that as the workforce steadily ages, it decides that it doesn’t want to work 15 hour days any more, but as the pool of available labour diminishes, the last thing the haulage industry would want is to reduce productivity among the remainers, and so it becomes a vicious circle.
I’ve always preferred working for the small haulage companies than the large logistics type company. But even if I could find a good haulage company I’d think twice before going back into haulage again.
That things that would put me off are not just the way employers treat drivers but the lack of facilities, treatment of drivers at delivery collection points and the just trying to get around the overcrowded UK road network.
