What makes 40 safe and 41 speeding ?

41 is over the limit but you can’t say its ‘‘speeding’’

Speeding is the term that is used when the law is broken in relation to speed

Hope this helps

The definition of a speeding vehicle is the use of excessive speed not a couple of mph over the limit.

Speeding in a court of law is anything over the speed limit, so 41 in a 40 is indeed speeding

OK I’LL DO IT BLEEDIN’ WELL FOR YA  excessive [ɪkˈsÉ›sɪv]
adj
exceeding the normal or permitted extents or limits;

Not forgetting Vosa can take action from the tacho readings. I should think 50 on a tacho for a lorry that stays in East Anglia would get noticed?

In this instance he meant lorries doing 56 where they should be doing 40.

We do have some dual carriageways, not a lot but some. Of the ten main roads that enter Norfolk from Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire, only the A12 at Hopton is a dc at the point of entry.

I came over the A66 on Wednesday morning at about 0530, doing 35 - 40 on the twists and turns and an artic over took me on a blind bend in misty condition road damp, I was shocked NO POINT in trying to get yourself killed or seriously injured, I was stopped once and told its 40 on a single carriage way, your a professional driver stick to it !!!, My boss says its so many hours to where ever im going, I always say will get there when I do !!!

I had a close call just a few days ago, or rather could have!!
Being conscious of what was happening behind me used to bother me, but that was some time ago now and now i couldnt give a ■■■■. Its 40 for me everywhere on a SC road. This proved worthwhile just the other week when i cleared the brow of a hill and was met by the copper with a hand held lazer pointing out the passenger window of his beemer. It would have been so easy to have been doing 52mph on that stretch if I’d have planted it!! I intead I opted for 40 whilst all the other prats steamed past at 60 pluss in an overtaking lane on what was an indicated 50 limit :grimacing:

Hiya did you know untill 1963 the lorry max was 28mph yes 1963…it was raised to 40 mph on all A road
and duelcarrige ways untll 1984 when the speed was upped to 50 mph on duelcarrage ways.
no one went over 40 mph on the A74 in the 60’s and 70’s it was a instant ban.
John

see certain roads could be upped to 50,

anyone who goes up and down the a9 between perth/inverness will know that doing 40 is dangerous, too many suicidal drivers…eg i had one yesterday but he was coming towards me in my lane. its also soo boring doing 40 up it and the fact is only the trolley dollies do 40 up their and one or 2 other folk, though if your the bloke from highland haulage who leaves inverness about 1730 its more like 60+

My suggestion would be to raise the speed limit for LGVs on Trunk Roads (the ones with green signs) to 50mph.

You’ll never get anywhere using commonsense.

just keep it at 40 or under , if their that much in a rush they’ll overtake ya , and risk a head on colllision just to save 5 minutes. :unamused:

Thing is, hgvs doing 40 on a single carriageway is just as much a pain in the arse for following traffic as farm traffic. Im not saying people should go faster, just have some courtesy for other road users and move over and let people pass easily on wider stretches. Very few seem to do this and seem to enjoy watching the queue pile up behind.

Especially Tosco wagons who have whole different mph scale i.e 40mph = 32mph, + or - 2mph

We all feel comfortable doing a certain speed regardless of the law. The law says 40mph on s/c, but on s/c there are times when it is safe to do 80mph and times when it is dangerous to do more than 30 mph. Common sense should prevail, but there has to be an average limit.

Cars hate us cos we do on average 10 mph less than them.

We hate tractors cos the go slower than us.

Everyone hates cyclists cos they dont pay road tax, but hold up traffic by cycling on the road even though there is a cycle lane on the pavement.

At the end of the day, if we get held up by any of the above it only adds a few minutes to our day. You could spend more time waiting at a fuel station or a roundabout than you spend trying to pass a slower vehicle.

I posted on here recently saying that I was one of the drivers that had started to up my speed on SC in order to prevent some of the suicidal over taking I see.

Well, last week, I received a NIP for doing 46 in a 60 SC. the speed will now be dropping back to 40! Any suicidal maniacs want to over take me? Crack on…I couldn’t give a ■■■■ anymore! :unamused:

And I bet you weren’t driving dangerously either. The 40 limit is only maintained because it’s easy money re fines and it keeps tossers like BRAKE, Rospa and Friends of the earth happy.

Sorry mate, but you were warned in previous posts on here, exceed the speed limit at your own risk.

I don’t agree with ANY speed limit, but I obey them mostly, especially in works time, and if I do speed, I do so at my own risk. I currently have a clean licence, but have been pulled or had tickets for speeding in the past, 69 in a 30 (wide 30mph dual carriageway type - so no visions of me tare arsing up a residential street, 6 points 350 fine + costs), 171mph on a motorway (M180 about 0330am, copper let me off with a warning after checking my bike and details out, think he was just happy I stopped and it wasn’t nicked), 74 average in a 60 with average speed scameras (A616, 2 lane section passing a line of trucks I’d been stuck behind, glad it was average not actual speed :smiling_imp: - appeal accepted on safety grounds)

In works vehicle, I go to work to EARN money, so don’t want to pay any fines, won’t work for these firms that take money for any damages (even though I’ve had no accidents at all in a year and no fault ones in 4yrs - it’s just not worth the risk). Obey law, avoid fines, if I must stop somewhere I might get a parking ticket, it’s phoned through 1st and they can make the decision and pay any subsequent fines.

Throw it in the bin, that seems very harsh a mere 6mph over. How were you caught?

Local camera van doesn’t touch HGV’s till they hit 50
