att:
I am seriously considering upping my 40mph on single carriageways.(If I have a long queue behind me, I do pull into lay-bys to let them past)
Never had so many imbeciles trying to commit suicide before.
I use the A17(Lincs) a lot and it is not just the car drivers, but the bloody lorry drivers too
I upped to 50mph today and had no hassle at all, infact a whole lot saferâŚBut, technically, I am breaking the lawâŚI really feel it is time something was done about this.
So, my questionâŚHow can I do something about it?
Here, here!!!
I also drive that road a lot and have recently upped my speed to 50. A hell of a lot safer! It amazes me that arctics try to overtake when youâre doing 40! I had one prick, carve me up on a roundabout just before Sutton Bridge. Nearly sent me into the firkin ditch!
I really am surprised more people are not killed on that road with the abysmal standard of overtaking!
Whenever I am on the road I consider what I would say in court ifâŚ
Trying to explain to a judge that you felt uncomftable with a long queue behind because you were doing 40, so you upped it to 50 then some idiot pulled out, you couldnât stop, carnage, smashing, crashing bending metal noises and dead people ensue. I donât think he/she would be very sympathetic or think that you were doing the right thing to help the impatient people behind you get to their destinations a couple of minutes earlier.
Stick to the speed limit, ignore the idiots behind that are flashing or beeping or whatever. You are doing your job, legally and correctly. You are not here to let people past, you are here to get whats on the back to the delivery point in a legal and safe manor, end of! If they want to try and get past you in an insanely small gap, then it is up to them, you will never stop that
The whole point here is not whether we do the speed limit or not, I would always prefer to do the limit for the sake of my license, this is a simple fact that on SOME roads it is bloody dangerous due to being dive bombed every 5 seconds by kamikaze nutcases, by doing 50 instead of 40 we prevent more likely accidents, an accident which could well be one we got involved in, I lose count how many near misses I have had doing 40 because of other drivers. Fact is that I am safer doing 50 rather than 40, and of course that also means everyone else is generally safer as a result, win win, I am paid by the hour btw and in no rush to get anywhere.

I applaued you for acting in a way that you feel you are making it safer for everyone, that is your choice and you are entitled to it. All I am saying is, if you get pulled or God forbid have an accident and it all goes pear shaped, do not be surprised when the book gets thrown at you. No court in the land will condone you breaking the speed limit, because it makes that stretch of road âsaferâ, IMHO.

I agree. The answer is more/better policing to catch the âdive bombersâ and ban them. I admit is frustrating doing 40 on a nice clear stretch of road, but it isnât worth going any faster due to the points etc, and no judge in the land will agree with the point that speeding made it safer. Better education for learner drivers and perioding âremindersâ (like our DCPC) for car drivers would help. My Mrs is having car driving lessons just now, she has never been told about HGV speed limits, doesnât seem to be part of the theory test?
ajt:
If you sit at 40mph your a pain in the rear for the majority of road users regardless if your being safe, legal, law abiding etc etc etc
The limit could quite easily be upped to 50 and it would not increase accidents
Ah but the railways would lose vital income, more fuel would be burnt hence the seas will rise flooding Bognor Regis, more pheasants and fluffy bunnies will dieâŚ
And BRAKE will be crying about it on Radio 2.
The what if scenario always plays on my mind, Hence I always reduce my speed back to 40 when closing on junctions or known blackspots, I donât wanna kill anyone and I certainly do not want to end up in jail for it either. But then thatâs surely just driving to the conditions â â

It is in the highway code and her instructor should have made sure she had a copy. How will she learn all the things she needs to know without it? I hope she reads it and passes her test, then at least she will be better prepared for the roads than many that are on them now.

Iâve been trying to teach her all I can - she passed the theory so must have known enough to do that?!
Muckaway:
BanburyDan, youâll be too aware of the number of camera vans on the A4260. Itâs safer to do 50 along there but it wont stop you getting points.
Yeah I have seen them. I have not often driven a lorry on that road but would do 40 if I did as thats the legal limitâŚ
An old boy I used to be drivers mate for years ago had a saying about speeding, he said you should think about your reasons for speeding, and then imagine how that answer would go down when you were stood in the dock on a death by dangerous charge and the prosecutor was asking you why you exceeded the limit.

Juddian:
Why do some 40mph single carriageway drivers drive illegally at 55 the moment they reach a dual carriageway, how come some speeding is OK but some isnât.
I donât travel at 40, people behind get frustrated and those too incompetent to do so end up overtaking badly, thereâs more to be a considerate or good driver than sticking rigidly to an outdated law.
Hey thatâs a good answer for Mr Traffic Policeman!
