Which,from the unionist point of view,conveniently over looks the fact that the nationalist vote can throw Salmand out after the referendum and then put in a ‘real’ nationalist government that is beholding to no one.IE,from the nationalist point of view,use Salmand as a means to and end then ditch him at the first opportunity.In which case England can’t stop the Scots using the Scottish pound being that there’s no copywrite on the word pound just as was the case before Ireland joined the Euro.Although having said that even in that case Ireland managed to do better when it seceded from the Union with England than the deal it had before the War of Independence while still being a part of the EU.Which is the example which Salmand might be going by.The difference in that case being how bad things were for Ireland and it’s nationalist population under English rule not how good the EU is.

How can they keep the pound if they become independent
Remaining in a common currency with England makes no sense.But the idea of a Scottish pound, which is already there in name,would be no different to the idea of the Irish currency before joining the Euro.
The polls are still showing a 10 point lead for the no vote so claims that ‘most Scots want an independent Scotland’ do not hold up.
The Leatherhead’s assertion that Scotland can ‘keep the pound since there’s no copywrite’ is risible. No one will lend Them money at anything like an economic rate unless they have massive fiscal backing. If they renege on their national debt not even that will be forthcoming.

The fact is Scotland won’t be able to borrow it’s way to success.It will have to sink or swim by re building it’s manufacturing and mining industries again even better than before and then using protectionist policies to allow them to grow and survive.It’s no surprise that the English government have destroyed that industrial base as a form of sabotage to keep the place dependent on England just to keep the idea of Unionism staggering on.Ironically as an Englishman with nationalist sympathies I reckon that I could do a better job of turning Scotland into a proud independent nation again than Salmand.
