Scottish Referendum

I thought it high time to stir things up!

As a Scot domiciled in England I think everyone has a right to comment and I don’t agree with the sentiment that only those Scots living in Scotland have the right to an opinion.

Mine is basically this.

Scotland became part of the UK mainly because of the Darien disaster when bankruptcy loomed large.
Apart from the oil, Scotland has done very nicely out of its relationship with England.
The collapse of RBS and Bank of Scotland would have been devastating to the Scottish economy if they had been independent.
There is a percentage of the Scottish population who will always hate the relationship but they are a small minority.
The SNP is a socialist party way to the left of Labour. Their economic vision does not add up.
Devolution would be a very dangerous experiment.

Stay with us. We love you!

well said m8 hope we all stay together we all do better if we do use to work for g and s from Bellshill running spain loved when up there had some gd times

I agree Andy, we are all entitled to an opinion. I find it a bit scary that kids of sixteen can vote on this very important point. I wonder how many parents on either side of the border would be happy to let their offspring make such crucial decisions in a domestic situation? Not many I wager, me included!!

Aye Salmond was desperate to have that Bill passed in the hope that most would vote for him. I for sure will vote NO there is too many unanswered questions whats that saying

BETTER THE DEVIL YOU KNOW THAN THE ONE YOU DONT. Eddie.

I’ll tell you now I won’t be buying anymore Haggis, That’ll teach them!!!

As a Yorkshireman living in Glasgow its a definite no for me, Britain does not need this, Salmond and his sidekick are out for glory for themselves not Scotland.
Les.

What worries me chiefly is that the economics do not stack up.

On the one hand they want to spend massive amounts on social projects and on the other they want to establish a sovereign wealth fund. There’s only one pot of money. You can’t do both!

The minute the SNP are questioned on this or what currency they will have or whether they will be able to join the EU they get shirty but cannot answer the direct questions.

Truck drivers are in a special positions in that thousands of us each week visit all parts of the UK.

Many English drivers are in Scotland each week and many Scots in England.

I for one would be very interested to hear their comments which are going to be far more informed than most of the ‘on the street’ interviews we get on TV.

I voted a long time ago and left.
Having had a look at what’s going on, it doesn’t seem to add up. All that seems to be going on it a few grandstanders trying to make a name for them selves, it doesn’t look like they have any solid policies.
IN Tasmania the voting public put the Greens in to a power sharing government with Labour about 6 years ago. When it was time to get on with the job they were at a loss. In the per election they seemed a bit vague about their policies but as Tasmania were sick of the government at that time the Greens got in along with Labour. What a mess…
They did so bad that at the last election they almost destroyed them selves, lost all their seats, and there were calls for them to dissolve their party.
At least we had a chance to re elect a different party at the next election, if your going for devolution then that’s it…

Beware, if they don’t seem to have any policies they probably don’t…

Jeff…

Well, it will be nice to see the Scottish passport and the new funny money they are going to use,lol The new customs area on the border will be busy with all that tax England is going to take of that Whiskey. It’s only for fun, just trying to have a laugh,I hope they do stay with us.

The democratic vote must be respected but in the case of this Scots referendum IMO,Salmond and that dodgy bird sidekick are going to lead Scotland into oblivion if they win the vote.He won’t be able to use the £ for a kick off or if he manages to his financial strings will still be pulled by London ! Second, there’s no way will he get a unanamous vote to join the EU,Spain for one wouldn’t vote yes and if he did manage to get in he would have to accept the Euro as the currency. If he does win the vote it won’t take long for the “proverbial” to hit the fan then you’d see a mass exodus over the Border south, well an influx of Jocks is far better(only marginally   ) than what we get from over the Channel !! Obviously I’m not bothered either way but I just don’t want to see Salmond victorious in the short term then proceeding to lead Scotland into the “valley of death”,it would be tragic but I’m sure the majority of Scots see right through those ■■■■■■■ the SNP so the right result will win ! No Customs or Border posts will need to be erected at Gretna or Berwick  Cheers Bewick.

Won’t anyone speak up for independence?

I thought we might have a ‘What have the English ever done for us?’ conversation.

What will the blessed Alex do if or rather when the vote is no?

I’m ambivalent, retired, given up the hooch, have my on-line groceries delivered .At my time of life its a curiosity side show that will take the place of the media child abuse,Gaza/Israel,Gov. re-shuffle circus. :unamused:
Be strange not to hear the Scottish weather report, tho?

The only way there will ever be a YES vote is if the English are allowed to vote as well.

Well one thing is certain that ■■■■ and his sidekick Nicola won’t go away but will carry on “greeting” and been a general pain in the arse to everyone, the biggest shock those two ■■■■■ will get is in the extremely unlikely event they get a Yes vote, they won’t have a ■■■■■■■ clue what to do next, rebuild Hadrians wall I would say and wish them the best of,I’ll not say British, luck, the English gravy train will have stopped running over the Border  Bewick.

     :wink:fxxk em

The first part will apply ,there will be no rush for the versa

Some of the comments here are less than intelligent.
The Scots will decide in September what it is they want to do.
No amount of ignorant comment, here and elsewhere, will influence that.

I will be voting ‘YES’.
The alternative will be the Westminster pendulum swinging between the Blue Tories and the Red Tories perpetually.
Each try to outdo the other in cutting services.
Many Scots don’t want any more ‘Blair’s’ with their weapons of mass destruction claims that result in our young people being brought back in body bags.
I will vote ‘YES’ in the belief that we wont be any worse off than we are now.

A few comments on previous posts here.
The Darien fiasco was a contributory factor, but not the only reason.
The Union of Crowns which led to the formation of the UK was that James the 6th of Scotland became James the 1st of the UK.
In other words he got a better paying job.
There were riots on the streets of Glasgow, Edinburgh and elsewhere on the day the Union was announced.
Popular Union? Not on your life!
As is today, those who think they are our betters and line their own pockets sold Scotland for English Gold. Today, think Brown, Darling, etc.
When Burns wrote about 'Such a Parcel of Rogues in a Nation ’ he didn’t mean the English!
The UK is Scotland and England as Wales and Ireland (At that time) were English fiefdoms.
Therefore if Scotland has to leave the EU after a ‘YES’ vote, so does England and the rest.

The Pound? Well, it’s not funny money the Royal Bank of Scotland, The Bank of Scotland and the Clydesdale Bank print, it’s Sterling. Says so right on the banknote 'Pay the bearer on demand Five (And other denominations) Pounds Sterling.
Sterling is as much our currency as it is England’s.

The SNP Socialists?
Untrue!
The SNP is an alliance of many political leanings, left, right and centre.
They remain united in the common belief that Independence is our Birthright. (Incidentally, I’m not a member. Never been a member of any party in my life)
There is a belief here that after Independence the SNP might split into other parties or parts of it end up in a revamped Labour Party.
Many Labour politicians and voters support a ‘YES’ vote. Milliband wont tell you that, but it’s a fact.

Scottish Passport - I wish! Highly unlikely though, we’ll still have an EU passport.

It’s true most Scots are to the left of English Politics, Thatcher is considered kin to the Devil up here.
Well, the Devil is thought of more kindly!

This Referendum is not about Salmond, it’s about Scotland.
Those of you who decry him should reflect that he got a landslide result in the 2011 Holyrood Elections therefore it’s just rubbish to say he is unpopular.
He went from a majority of 1 in 2007 to 60 odd in 2011. Cameron, Clegg and Milliband would love to be that unpopular!
He wont lead us into the Valley of Death, more likely, the Promised Land.

Please note, there are no Border Posts between Nth Ireland and Ireland. One has Sterling and the other has the euro. No need for International Transport either. Fact!

English Gravy Train? Denis, Denis, I’m surprised at you!
Have you never heard of the McCrone Report which was buried by Westminster Politicians of all parties? Have a read online then tell me which way the Gravy Train rolls.

As to voters at 16. I have many English friends and they are always surprised when I tell them how things are this side of the Border. I wonder why? Don’t English Schools teach you about how different we are up here?
The Act of Union guarantees us separate Education, Banking and Law (Think Marriages at Gretna Green).
No doubt many of you will be unaware that In Scotland you come of age at 16. That’s right, at 16! Want to get married, don’t need to ask anyone’s permission, go right ahead. Sign up and join the Army? Go ahead.
They can vote in the Referendum, unfortunately, they are unable, at present to vote in elections, sooner that’s altered the better.

So get your teeth into that lot!
I’m not going to get into any arguments, I’ve said my piece. That’s what I think.
Feel free to critise if you wish, no problem, just don’t bother with the offensive comments about Salmond, Scotland, Scots or myself. We’ll treat those who do with the contempt they deserve.
Alex
PS postmanpat, Scotch whisky doesn’t have an ‘E’ in the spelling. Something else not known south of the Border?

ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz :unamused:
