Scottish Referendum

I am Scottish and proud of it, Scottish first, British second. There are two sides to all debates and this one is being debated everywhere, even here on Trucknetuk. Although I agree with almost all of Alex’s comments there are a few areas that I am concerned about regarding the future of Scotland and the Union. There are a lot of unanswered questions that put me in the undecided section. The first thing that would need to happen is to hold an election. Where would that leave the SNP? As Alex said they would need to pick a side.

Why do we need Europe if we think we can go it alone?
Why if we are such a drain on the union do they want to keep us so much?
Do we have a plan in place to establish a Scottish embassy in all the countries we would trade with?
Why have England not been calling for an English government to govern English affairs, a Westminster parliament could have overall control on the four semi independent nations?

These are only four points from many that the common five eighths punter on the street could have in his head. My main fear is that too many will vote with the heart ( braveheart) and not the head. To be honest I want to vote yes but still to be convinced that it will be the right thing to do. I think if we can convince voters that they will not be any worse off then they have nothing to loose. Personally Scotland has been getting drained for years but it would take a long time to plug the holes.

Hello all. I am a Scot who has lived in East Anglia for 50 happy years. I will watch the outcome with some interest and respect the decision of the Scottish people. All I have to say is this. Hand on your heart, if there was an opportunity to get out from under the bunch of winkers who call themselves a government, and who are wrecking our forebears efforts , wouldn’t you take it? Jim.

Thanks guys for starting to contribute the ‘yes’ side of the argument. Especially to Alexsaville for that well argued and thoughtful contribution.

I am definitely on the ‘no’ side but live in Kent and so have no vote.

My worry is that the SNP are incapable of defining their figures or of answering the significant questions raised. I don’t think they have the capability to run an independent Scotland. Every contentious issue is fudged and opponents rubbished which is not a good sign.

I also have to say that all the comments referring to government from Westminster could equally be applied to Kent, or Durham or ■■■■■■■■ Thankfully we live in a democracy and our willingness to be governed by the party voted in by the majority of the country is what keeps us in this happy state.

Can some one explain to me why this posting is here on Trucknet under the Old Companies etc etc why has it not been removed as it has NOTHING to do with Trucks, its Politics

Because TNUK is a cyber community that enjoys a bit of gossip in its breaks! There are lots of asides on these threads about the weather, things that the missus has said, life down at the bowling green, the price of cars, and even holiday reminiscences. You only have to scroll past the boring bits if you don’t like them! Robert

sssSSSSSSSSCROLL…

Should the Scots vote YES which,of course,is their democratic right to do if they wish at least one good thing will come out of it for England Labour will never get voted back into power as it’s the Scottish MP’s that make the difference. It does ■■■■ me off that the Scots MP’s can vote on matters that sometimes don’t concern Scotland but can English MP’s vote on Scottish matters, not a chance so how’s that for fairness Alex ? And can you also answer the other points I raised mate, namely how can Scotland become a member of the EU if it were to leave the UK ? as I said the vote to have them in has to be 100% and Spain for one wouldn’t vote yes ! And on the very slimest of chances that Scotland were to gain membership they would be bound to have to accept the Euro ! So much for insisting that they keep the £ which here again fiscal matters would be decided in London by the Bank of ENGLAND so I imagine that Salmond would go a real bundle on that one as his strings would still be pulled from London and he could do absolutely zilch about it ! So there are a few insoluble problems which would dog a YES vote but guess who’ll get the blame regardless of who causes the grief, you guessed it “good 'ol England”,so if it is to be a yes vote Hadrians wall should be rebuilt without delay so there’ll be plenty of work for English tippers for a number of years eh! Cheers Dennis.

Well I am a definite NO vote due to the fact Salmond and Sturgeon will tell the yes punters only the good things, They duck and dive rather than admit that the figures don’t add up. Alec stated the SNP were not Socialists my name for them is Scottish Nutters Party. I hope they never get the chance to separate us as although I am Scottish I also like being British. Eddie.

Hello Dennis, hope you are well.
I tend to agree with your assessment that if Independence happens, Labour will be in the wilderness in England.
You are perfectly correct, it is wrong that Scottish MP’s get to vote on English affairs as they should do as the SNP’s MP’s do, don’t vote on matters that don’t concern them.
Since that is Labour, Lib-Dem and the one Tory MP that vote on matters that don’t concern them, that’s where the problem lies. If it is a ‘YES’ vote, they will all be out of a job, problem solved. If it is a ‘NO’ vote, only English voters can do something about that and maybe they will.
English MP’s do get to vote on Scottish matters that are not devolved to Holyrood. They too, should not vote.
I totally agree that it is unfair and unjust for them to vote thus.

If Scotland votes to leave the UK, then the UK ceases to exist. If the UK ceases to exist, then England is in the same position as Scotland.
I wrote earlier on how the UK came into existence.
Many Scots think we should dump the Bank of England (Set up by a Scot!) and do our own thing. One of a number of options.
The Euro is a non-starter. Again, I repeat, Sterling is partly Scotland’s.

Rebuilding Hadrian’s Wall wont be popular amongst those who live in the parts of England north of the wall. No-mans land?

The national debt is also partly Scotland’s by the way.

I think this thread has everything to do with trucking as thousands of our colleagues cross the ‘border’ both ways every day so have first hand experience of the issues.

If you want real boredom try the AEC V8 thread!

Now don’t encourage that ■■■■ from Leatherhead to join in the debate on this thread otherwise you’ll have Alex getting “tooled up” with his Dirk,Claymore and shield and marching south to Leatherhead ! and he would get further south than Bonny Prince Charlie who only got to Derby!where he had lost most of his army by that time. However,Alex would on the contrary gather up a vast force of TNUK members on his march south who would be delighted to march on Leatherhead to help       Cheers Bewick.

Hi Alex, nice to hear from you and I trust you are “braw” as well! It’s great to have a bit of good banter and I know neither of us takes offence all I care about is that there won’t be a gigantic bollock dropped because if there is the outcome will probably affect us all for years to come and where will those politicians be that caused the upset ? Why they’ll be retired and drawing fat inflation proof pensions I guess ! All the best to you and yours Cheers Dennis.

check your knowledge mr forgot ur name already that Scottish money your looking will go along with your partnership with what still is great Britain .personally if u wanna go go I feel for all brave young guys in ww1 ww2 that fought and died for great Britain welsh irish Scottish English im pretty sure they would be happy to be in position today food on table decent living and not be bleeting the same old c…p many do .

Dennis

I am well, thank you. As you say, a bit of banter never gives any offence. Whichever way the Referendum goes, no doubt their is bound to be some real B/ks dropped on all sides.
Intelligent debate never hurt anyone, except those with limited intelligence!

I am hoping that Scotland vote YES, that will be one stamp i havnt got in my passport

On a serious side, I dont want any part of the UK to break up ( well ok, wales can go if they want to, they havnt got anything we want  ) we 4 countries are a union and have been for a long time, and as they say the more the better, us as an English nation are the strongest, we proved that at Bannockburn ha ha what a joker i am, lets stick together and move forward together for a better future for everyone, Great Britain can be great again once we get rid of the EU, we are better off without them in my opinion. Ok Scotland gets some extra benefits that we do not, but they also pay their way, and i think it would be a tragedy to leave the union and become independent as a lot of companies and infrastructures in place at the moment would move south and leave a lot of people out of work, there is talk of not being able to keep the £ as a currency, not an issue, but Scotland did have its own currency anyway ( maybe still have ) But what ever way you vote, use it wisely, and dont listen to the scaremongers…good luck.

Jazzandy:
Won’t anyone speak up for independence?

I thought we might have a ‘What have the English ever done for us?’ conversation.

What will the blessed Alex do if or rather when the vote is no?

I heard king alex on the radio a couple of weeks ago saying he will still be in charge of the snp even if the vote is no.is"nt that big of him of course he will he has"nt finished lining he"s pocket"s yet, also heard he claimed £16,000 expense"s for 12 trip"s to london

Well if Scotland vote yes then you only have wales and northern ireland and you said you don’t want Wales and that leaves northern Ireland and if we every get a choice it will probably be yes

It was in the Sunday Post yesterday they have just managed to get him to come clean for a trip to Chicago 5years ago his hotel bill for four nights £3,650 the top hotel in town, only the best for Alex eh. And meanwhile there are folk getting stuffed monthly with this bedroom tax and even if they want to move there is no smaller houses available crazy. Eddie.

The big debate is tonight on STV or outside Scotland streamed on STV player.

Damp squib but I think Ali came out of it on top. Nicely restrained performance but angry at the right times.

Alec came across as the bully character he is. All mouth and no trousers!

Still won’t answer the basic questions.
