Recently I was informed by a French friend that it would have been better for the French if Britain had not kicked the Germans out,surprised me that did.
We should have left the French to it in WW2. DeGaulle was happy to take sanctuary here and use Britain but was against us joining what was the common market.

Even the most raving euro supporters seem to be saying that it’s all about profit for big business obviously often owned and/or run by foreign immigrants (no surprise there) and/or often with investment interests in foreign industry not British and being blackmailed by a load of Germans,who seem to be saying that they’ll attack everyone around them if they don’t get everything they want and therefore into accepting German rule.Regardless of wether we beat the zb out them in ww2 or wether we’d have lost.All of which seems to be a total waste of lives of all those who died beating the zb’s into submission twice when we could have just declared ourselves neutral like Swiss,Sweden,Spain and the USA at the start of ww2.In which case we’d have been a lot better off than we were in 1973 when we joined the whole zb up.

It’s a bit more complicated than that if you factor in the issue of Vichy France compared to those parts of France which resisted German occupation.The fact is DeGaulle was right the EU was/is no place for Britain because Britain has no real ties or interests with the continent.Our ties were,and should have remained,with the colonies of Oz,Canada and New Zealand.All of which applies even more now that the EU includes so many East European interests.The surprising thing is why even France,let alone Britain,would wish to remain part of that EU zb up as it stands now except of course the cheap labour potential for big business interests.

Merc0447, I dont think Race comes Into It as most ethnic Northern Europeans are white, fair haired with light Brown eyes or Blue/ green eyes…
Wether there from Germany, Holland,France, Belgium(where I’m from), Scandinavia or the UK, racially we are the same…
The difference Is that you live on an Island & I don’t…
I understand that most British don’t want to be ruled by anybody else, But unfortunately the world has turned & ’ Rule Britannia’ no longer rules the waves…
I’m not saying that being ruled by Brussels Is a good Idea either as we also (In Belgium) don’t want to be run by MEP’s from other Countries (this Includes British MEP’s), but unfortunately for the majority we have to lie down & just take It.

If Britain had stayed out in 1973 and kept all of it’s oil and gas supplies for it’s own population sold at below world market rates and kept it’s coal mines open and applied import tarrifs against German goods and kept our 8% purchase tax rate instead of silly levels of VAT all handed over to Europe to make the Germans even richer.Let alone spending even more on the new Eastern European members and cheap imported east european labour adding to the unemployment levels already caused by imports of German manufactured goods which we could make for oureselves,we certainly wouldn’t be having this problem today.

Worryingly (pre 2008 at least) the tiny Republic of Ireland was the UK’s largest export market.The destination for more British product than the USA, France, Germany, India, Japan or China.
No wonder things feel a little subdued here.
That shows how little we actually export anyway not how big the Irish market is.It doesn’t take a genius to realise that we’ve never been a major exporter to America or Europe because we’ve never produced anything much which they can’t produce for themselves.
The same applies in regard to Japan,China and India but vice versa.None of those countries have anything which we need and which wouldn’t mean exporting goods of a higher value than anything which they can produce that we need from them in return.

So I reckon things have changed drastically since (pre) 2008.
Our biggest export markets are now USA, Germany, France, Netherlands then Ireland.
Some more interesting statistics from UKTradeInfo:
North East, Wales and Scotland are the only UK areas where Exports outweigh Imports.
September 2012 highest exports are Mineral fuels, Nuclear reactors, Vehicles, Pharmacutecals, Electrical machinery.
