scania 143

so does your truck now work rob?

yes, but my truck is only 6 years old, and the one that has had the replacement engine is only 8 years old, neither of them are 20 years old, they are both designed at euro3 and run at 44 tonne (50 tonne design weight) and not had to alter anything to run into London for the LEZ compliance

dbt:
it is designed to do what they are expected to do… thats why people are still running them…

but have they all done the stupid idea that you are planning? are they running at 44 tonne? are they running into London? are they LEZ compliant?

NO

Oh, and Special, you really want to hear of some of his ‘other’ ideas :unamused:

they have given me many hours of amusement

lol its cuz im different eh rob :unamused:  they are not able to go to london… or lez compliant… again hence the transplant

I have ther answer, i have here a 143, 1989, £20k and its yours, just dont go into london and jobs a good un.!

take the engine and transmission out of it and he’ll give you £3k for it

well that wouldnt just be a shell then tho would it lol :unamused:

for the same price as buying this gentleman’s 143 i could have the 143 that ‘i’ want… im sure its lovely mate just the lez and other citys to follow stop me buying a 143…

When it comes to things like this there is a simple formula for gauging the likelyhood of success - how many other people are doing it? If you can’t find plenty of other people doing it (and as far as I can see you can’t even find someone who agrees it is a good idea!), then there is probably a reason for it …

I’ve always took a slightly different view  when everyone else does one thing do the opposite  (although that probably works better in agriculture than haulage)

Point taken, sometimes doing the opposite gives you the niche you need - but I stand by my opinion in this case, the idea is bonkers! :open_mouth:

its very simple as far as i can see, there will never be a 143 hybrid running around with dbt being the operator . :unamused: no amount of waffle on here about doing it is ever going to come to light, just take the advice and buy a modern high horsepower truck and try and make a living with it for a while and if at a later date you have the money to indulge your fantasy then good luck with the conversion. then come back here, and if we are all still alive, and show the pics/videos of this hybrid within the lez zone loaded to 44tonnes and ask for everyones apologies. :unamused:

dbt:
as for the cost… a rolling ‘shell’ (not half decent one) for around 3k… conversion is between 12-14k… what a normal 143 would cost anyway isnt it?

it seems this lez thing is a right pain in the ■■■■■■… not choosing to modify your trucks to go into london is one thing… but what happens when it goes to all major city’s? i know what im proposing is not a simple thing… but why not? buy a shell… have the cab re-trimed? and fit new engine and running gear? all for what it would cost to buy a 143 anyway… as for the no good anymore as a haulage truck?? you better tell the irish boys this because they mustn’t have been sent the info as i see them running 143’s alot still? last week i seen 4 irish wagons that i remember… 2 143’s and 2 164’s… theres a lad around the corner from where i live who only buys 143’s? there’s a certain Scottish haulier who ONLY buys 143… he has one exception and that is 1 124 purely for london work… they must be a good truck still or people wouldnt be running them? regardless of beeing 15-20years old….

would that be McGawn Bros?? if so they now have 4 164’s and one 124 so goin off the older models

I don’t believe for even a fraction of a second that you’re going to be able to get a non-rotten 143 rolling shell, a decent (i.e. not already done over a million clicks) later v8 engine, all the necessary electronics, and the 100+ hours of labour you’re going to need to put it all together into something that sort-of-works for anywhere near 20 grand.

And for 20k you could get a very tidy 3 or 4 year old FH or XF with well under half a million clicks on it.

a 3-4 year old volvo is around 30-35k… daf are pretty much the same… thats fine if u dont believe in what i have said… thats up to you… my current truck is 10 years old… done 2.1 million clicks and pulls like a train… waves by by at new R480’s no bother… so as far as mileage goes … not bothered… as long as its been maintained…

ok found 2 143 500’s for sale both on air and euro2 so plateable to 44/40ton… whats the main difference between the 450 and 500? why do people say the 450 is the better engine??

sure it doesn’t matter, aren’t you going to rip the engine out to build your own hot-rod. :unamused:

Not entirely sure, and have been too busy today to check, as i have been down the yard, washing and polishing my scania 143, and washing an polishing my fh12 460 globetrotter, and deciding which to drive tomorrow!, thats the road you need to be followiing mucker ! ta ta , im out of here now!By the way, its the scania tomorrow

thank you for that…

143 500 = edc which had problems on earlier models. 143 450 = mechanical fuel pump was more reliable and if set up by the right person would proberly be 500bhp+.

thank you for a mature answer mate  i was aware of the edc like but didnt know if there were any other differences… there’s 2 143 500’s one 1994 and one 1992… 6500euro each… ok not in great condition but a nice paint job later some alloys and good service they’d be very smart…
