thankyou for that seen these thought my luck was in with the silver one rung the dealer about it the only thing 500hp with it is the badge although the ex owner says its a decent motor might go down next week the white one i think that company just breaks them as for the 144 yes i like em used to drive a 480 topliner loved it but it all boils down to money good ones hold there value .am i right in saying parts for the 4 series are alot more expensive than with the 3 series

was going to have a look at two up at brid got half way there n car engine went pop some day that was not having much look they realy do hold there price these motors considering there age

I know somebody running an N plate 450 at 44tonnes, it has an RPC too, it had a 44tonne plate on it in the days when you could only run 44tonnes on Intermodal work & I guess it’s a loophole.

But you cannot run a pre Euro2 engined vehicle at 44tonnes, that is a fact, at the time that 44tonnes came in I was at TRUCK mag & I did a couple of features on it, I obviously did my research before putting information in a magazine aimed at the haulage industry, one thing that came up was RPC or not, only Euro2 & above vehicles would qualify, unless, it would appear, you had the original Intermodal 44tonne plate on it.

There are steel road friendly suspension systems out there, I don’t know about ERF (I avoid them like the plague) but the early FH had a weird S shaped spring (not S-Ride, that’s something else entirely) which qualified as road friendly but that was only on 4x2s & you can’t run them at 44tonnes unless you have a 4 axle trailer.

Just run at 41tonnes & buy a 450, they’re much more reliable than the EDC 470/500 & they go better too, IMO the best lorry ever made is the 143-450.

Its the work thats making me look at the weight i have looked at a few different types of work i can just about get away with running at 41t with the work i want . i also looked at containers and can run at 41t doing that restrict myself a little but been told they can work me but sinse decided i want to try and stay of containers if i can .i am just looking into tipper work before i buy as it is similar to what i want to do they are faster to tip and a greater area of work opens with a tipper but i am told you need to be at 44t or i will be wasting my time going to ask on here for some advice on a new topic on tipper work

Don’t want to worry you Lee Mat, but it seems you’re approaching this O/D business the wrong way, if you’re doing it so you can smoke around making a nice noise from your Eminox then you will soon be a very poor man :open_mouth:

You need to have the work in place & a sensible payment structure worked out, how are you going to get fuel, where are you going to park, who will do your maintenance/breakdowns, trailer hire, a tyre supplier etc before you even think about getting a lorry, most of the successful O/Ds will tell you that they only bought a lorry because they had the offer of work first.

if you find a 500 for 16k buy it, i drove 1 for 6 months at 44ton uptill march this year, they will only go up in valve as getting harder to find, i would heavyly recomend the 144 for simular money 2 to 3 years newer, imo the 4 series is easier and no more expensive to repair than a 3 series. our local scania dealer (purfleet) didnt even carry a fan belt for our 500, alot of 4 series parts are the same on the new R series so more chance them holding what you need.

We have a 143 450 lying in our yard with a ■■■■■■ turbo. Im led to believe it had a engine rebuild within last 5 years… One of the other workers believes boss is looking at getting rid of it, was even wanting to export it, maybe not wanting much?? Only a 4 wheeler/40T… 1400ltr tanks, 60mph job as well… Ran well when I was in her, small cab though.

In recent times i’ve been pondering upon if its really economical running old kit. I’m not keen on changing my motor, but is it financially viable?

would look at a 144 but i think i will be buying a headache for the money i ve got . thats a tidy looking 3 series

Hey Lee I could give you a number and you’ll be able to find out more from my boss■■? Its literally just lying in the yard doing nothing. Could be a bargain?

up running and winning i think it would be newer kit everytime makes sense if you have money in your back pocket companies take you more seriously when you have been at it for a while i think well hope anyway

where is it at

Stranraer bud, 4 hr drive from Manchester if thats where you are? Phone call wont cost anything?

I did think that may be the case, which is why I was a lot more polite than normal

It makes sense to get a cheap motor to start out & as I have said the 143 is an excellent choice, good luck, in this economic climate it won’t be easy.

what sort of condition are you looking for?

pristine?

work in progress?

something to do some work on to get it MoT’d?

how about any of these?

dealerservices.autotrader.co.uk/ … ck_bus.htm

thanks for number . can only try .a work in progress motor rough n ready will do have got a cut off point where they become not worth it as you can get a newer motor for similar money 85 daf ,premium,fh12 but they are no where near as strong and at this price although saying that prices are right down at the mo so there are bargains are to had am still at the stage of olicence at mo so no real rush just lookin at tipper work at mo rates costs etc

what sort of price are you looking at paying?

i have just decided to sell one of my trucks, it’s a 2002/52 plate DAF XF SuperSpace Cab 6x2 44,000kg in red

genuine reason for wanting to sell it, i have seen another truck that i want, can’t say much about it at the minute, but i must sell this one first.

this year, it has had a new turbo, intercooler was removed and cleaned out at the same time, new clutch, new air dryer, new foot brake valve, new pressure limiting valve, various other new air valves fitted, new starter motor, new brush pack in the alternator, replaced the heater motor, just about to fit a new exhaust silencer, new batteries.

PM me if you are interested
