You need to go out on Saturday and find out about the job from the other driver but remember he could be a company man so will tell you what he wants you to no. Ask about hours 50 to 60 a week is 10 to 12 a day is that working hours or total which could be another 2 on top, same with start times 0530 to 1100 is ok until you start at 1100 finish at 2400 then have to be back at 0900.
I’ve just had it confirmed by email
Shifts are as follows rotated on a weekly basis
5.30 Start – 15.00 finish
7.00 Start – 17.00 finish
10.00 Start – 18.30 finish
10.00 Start – 20.00 finish
11.00 Start – 21.00 finish
Basic total is £479.40 (this does not include any overtime worked which is calculated on a daily basis.
Well now we have more detail I’d say it’s not the worst, and as a Newbie the experience gained is also of value to you!
I think you should take it if driving is what you want to do…
You’re right that you need some experience to open more doors, and as soon as you have the 180 days that some firms want, you’ll then be setting your sights on the probably more desirable jobs that want 2 years experience!
P.S. Yes Juddian, that’s what I meant.
Best of luck, and as already said, remember to make the right noises on your trial…

I’m a passenger mate, apparently I can’t get insured to drive without being employed. I’ll be asking questions though and alot of them.

Well they will be looking for positivity, especially if they are a company man. So try to keep any negative opinions to yourself and remember that agency work generally goes quiet in January for a few months…
Alright thank you I’ll bear that in mind.
Hello guys well I went out on the job with a driver to get a feel for the job. Didn’t drive but got to see how everything operates and I’ll have an induction.
The depot manager phoned me to see how it went and I’ve to phone tomorrow to let them know if I want the job or not. I want your views as some of stores are really tight so it’s abit daunting to think what if I get stuck lol.
As previously said I’m completely new with one agency job, 2 hour refresher training under my belt but hardly any reversing experience. Is it normal to feel like this, should I go for it?
Thanks
Email and call local companies ,Do not just take a low rate to “get by”
You work to live and try to live “WELL”
All the best
I have been in contact with local companies but at they have all said they want to take someone on with some experience, this is the first company that is willing to give me a start and I know the money isn’t great (479 basic per week not including overtime) but surely it’s not the worse either. I’m just wondering if anyone has been in the same boat and what were their experiences of getting into/out of stores, reversing etc. Was it as bad as they thought it would be at first?
I would really appreciate your help on this.
Thanks

Mate the only way to learn to reverse in tight spots is to get out there and do it but do it safely.
I’ve done work for Harveys furniture and I thought they delivered to some tight spots until I went Palmer and Harveys and man the tight spots are proper tight spots but as the weeks went on it got easier and the confidence goes up. Though I did crush a cage at a garage.
Some points for you when you arrive at the location…
Get out and look around the place, find where you want to stick the truck and plan it.
Take your time, get out again if need be.
Don’t panic, nerves will kick in.
Don’t be afraid to grab a citizen to help you reverse though don’t expect them to be a fully trained banks man.
Don’t have the shop keeper or store staff dictate to you where the truck should be EVER. This is why I crushed a cage and then had an argument with a store keeper at a different location cause I refused to stick the truck in a stupid place. I’d rather struggle with the Cages then cause some damage to the truck or cars ect… Remeber you’re the driver not them.
Best reverse I did for PH was up an incline of about 60-70% and as you reach the top there is a wall that’s been taken out and a 25ft drop so you had to reverse it around that and a building. Was pretty tight but fun.

I’ve been driving class 1 around 6 months I’m still really struggling with my reversing especially blindside.i know it’s best to take ur time and have a look but most the yards I go to people just seem to get irate when it takes u a while.has anyone got any tips or is it just a case of it coming with time. Maybe I’m just over thinking it I don’t know. Thanks in advance
I’d suggest most Newbies are initially daunted and worried about getting in tight spots and becoming stuck.
But over a few weeks and months as your confidence grows, you stop worrying or caring where you’re being sent, and when you are in a tight spot you start to relish the challenge. Honestly!
As for blindside reversing, I don’t know, I’m also still crap at it and avoid it whenever practical!
If you’re not already, adjust your mirror (if it works ) out as much as you can…
Or go find a truck with a rear window!

Like I said earlier it’s generally easier to find work if you’re in work, pressure is off a bit. Don’t be daunted by the tight drops, after getting into them a couple times you’ll laugh. I first drive class 1 with co op at Birtley, those single axle 27ft trailers were a nightmare, look at the sternwheeler and the trailer was at 45° angle and combine that with some if the tightest drops I ever been to was a learning curve. Guys will slate the Co but I learned a lot there though it is kinda sheltered…my point being don’t be phased by tight drops or the fact you have little experience, don’t let your confidence get knocked by people looking for experienced drivers or the fact that your wagon is 8ft wide and the gap only 7… remember we all been there, and I was not so long ago with my class1

Thanks guys it makes me feel better knowing I’m not the first or last guy to feel like this. I hate my current job and it’s exciting to think i have the opportunity to change from driving a bus to a truck. I know your right in turning up, planning it and taking my time. I just hope I’m making the right decision by taking up the job offer because if I don’t like it I’ve got experience then and can look for something else

Palmer and harveys,Bidvest and places like that looks great on your CV. I’d only done 3 months at Palmer and Harveys and when I posted my CV on a few sites I was getting calls daily near enough from agencies and all of them said in the short space of time I’d been driving I had some of the best experience going.
So even if you hate it you’ll find something else.

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. So would you all take this job if you were in my shoes?

Only you can answer that but ask yourself…
Do you mind long hours?
Do you mind hard physical work where you’ll be going home shattered every night?
Do you want to gain the experience driving in small ■■■■■■ locations and learning reversing?
Do you mind working under pressure?

I don’t mind hard graft, besides I think I’ll only be grafting when loading/unloading cages. I know it’s more hours but I’m thinking of the bigger picture. I could get something better paid if I can stick it for 6 months- 2 years. Surely then it will be open new opportunities. I think it’s just me, I’ve been in my current role for 8 years and i just want to be sure I’m doing the right thing as I have a mortgage, family etc to think about.

Don’t be scared of change mate. You’ve paid for the licence for a reason. You should really never be out of work.
Save up enough in new job and go for class 1 licence and use that to move jobs if you hate it at new place.
