I don’t think it does drive ‘public opinion’. I can explain why i read it easily. It produces stories that go against the current socio/political norms, or the way we are supposed to think. If it wasn’t there then who else will question what they bring up? You always need some sort of balance, it wouldn’t do for everyone to think the same and agree, it doesn’t make for a healthy environment, even mentally.
The truth is if you are remotley interested in any news story you’re as well to check for other news sources and find out the truth rather than believe anyones headlines. There’s always got to be someone breathing down your neck, it keeps us on top form !!!
True it may attract comments from people who pick up on a head line line…“immigrants cost the uk economy 2billion a year”…or some such other eyewatering headline. It doesn;t make everyone who reads it a bigot or whatever, some of us can sift through the [zb] whilst enjoying the discomfort it gives policy makers/government bodies/public authorities. And of course you can always read the Gruniad the next day and discover that immigrants actually make the economy richer by 6 billion a year, or some other such counteracting statement
Bigots tend to have a one sided view, even worse is someone who wants to deny you your view.
It does drive public opinion, and to a certain extent decides elections along with News International. Don’t try to portray the Daily Mail as being on some moral crusade to question everything. It’s not an outsider by any stretch. The Daily Mail had its way with manipulating both politicians and the public for long enough. I do read various news sites, but you won’t find much truth in the Mail.

With all of them, the bare bones of the headlines will be correct/factual. Its how they portray the facts they’ve given. They all manipulate/distort or put a twist on them. I’m not seeing the Mail as an unusual case.

In response to your " How do you find the time to read all those papers" question M,lud. I submit this plea. I claim that as I am --(a) retired . (b) do not give lengthy online cookery demonstrations. (d) do not spend many hours compiling video masterpieces. ( e) spend many hours on Facebook chatting to friends and other associates. (f) do not spend countless hours engaging with those who respond to an invitation to" visit my site for rants. Rambles. Videos and Photos. and am (g) not studying for a Law degree on the Open University.-- The lack of which time concuming pastimes, allows me time to indulge my passions of Gardening- Reading- Walking-. Helping out at my local Animal Rescue Centre, and posting an average of 0.78 posts per day, on this site. That is my submission in my defence. I rest my case. Toodleooh old bean.

Did you see the news clip in the BBC studio where the chief honcho of the AA was giving his ten cents worth? “The fire was caused by the HGV’s because their metal fuel tanks are exposed!! Cars on the other hand have plastic tanks that are well hidden. Something should be done about HGV tanks -I mean you can see them from the roadside!!” failed to mention that every petrol powered car is a mobile bomb with v.low flash-point. It takes a lot to get diesel going.

I have a confession. I used to buy the daily mail but I stopped and won’t allow it in the house ever since they stitches Ericsson up prior to the world cup then they did it again to JT. There’s no depth they won’t sink to in their moral outrage. I feel better for that.
I find the daily mirror, daily record most revolting. The Guardian is just toilet paper. The daily mail is one of the better papers but not as good as the telegraph or the times.
