A 2023/2024 investigation by the Daily Mirror (in partnership with Led By Donkeys) revealed that Hunt’s property portfolio, managed by Mare Pond Properties, raised rent by £300 per month (an 18% hike) between tenants. The previous rent was around £1,700 monthly; the new rate went over £2,000 after a bidding war .
Why it’s controversial: The rent increase was almost double the prevailing inflation rate, fueling claims of hypocrisy—especially since, as Chancellor, Hunt had urged wage restraint and monetary prudence
so thre was a bidding war….. ie at least two separate tenants wanted the property and offered to pay more. that is not the same as throwing people out on the street and then deciding to put the rent up before you lease it again.

Yes have to agree. Even though they both did the same thing in raising the rents, with her being part of a government planning to bring in laws to stop landlords jacking up rents, AND being the minister for homeless, it’s very hypocritical and a terrible image to present, and worse than Jeremy hunt. But then again he did “forget” to declare his rental apartments, and he had seven of them
dont pull a franglais and pretend you dont get it…. one had tenants and because she couldnt raise the rent any other way she threw them on the street then raised the rent 21% The other had tenants that left then had 2 new prospective tenants that wanted the property and got into a bidding war. that is why the rent went up compleatly different scenarios… one is a callous labour hypocritical ■■■■■. the other is a genuine landlord that the only reason the rent went up was because the prospective tenants offered more in a bid to win the tenancy.

Maybe we should pass a law to stop this happening, and maybe a government that did pass that law would be doing the right thing for the people
only if it wasnt another land/ house grab. under this new law if the tenant is evicted you cant rent it out again for 6 months. That would be bad enough… but what the papers have failed to report on this story is that also under the new law is if a property is empty for six months then the council can seize it. So mr and mrs blogs keep their parents property because they cant afford the death duty. It might of made a nice holiday home for them and a bit of a nest egg for when they retired but they cant do that with this bill because the council will seize it. So they have to rent it out and hope the tenants look after it and pay their rent. if they dont they cant evict them. if they get into financial difficulty because the tenants arent paying the rent they have to sell their own home. If the tenants move out they have lost the home.
Its a ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ of what the tories suggested 2 years ago and labour voted down while shouting about renters rights.

What is true is that councils ALREADY have that power to take over a home that has been empty for more than 2 years and they are trying to change it to just 6 months but that doesn’t seem to be in the renters rights bill. And if they did, mr and mrs bloggs would still own the house
