Petition for banning lorries from overtaking!

I will do the job of the person who monitors this E-Petitions website.

Car safety hats for drivers and passengers

Responsible department: Department for Transport

2000 people are killed every year on our roads, and another 20,000 are seriously injured. This is a particularly common cause of death and serious disablement for younger people. This petition therefore calls for safety hats to be made compulsory for all car drivers and passengers. Cars are heavy-duty, high-speed machinery, and despite modern innovations such as seat belts and air bags, brain injuries are still a leading cause of death and injury. A study by the University of Adelaide has even shown that a simple bicycle-style helmet would cut brain injuries by 50% and save 1 in 5 crash victims. What are we waiting for?

or we could teach car drivers to drive which would reduce the number of accidents and therefore injuries :unamused:

]Last week I pulled out doing 56 to let another truck join the m11 where it goes to 2 lanes only to have him speed up to 56 and sit with his cab half way down my trailer leaving me unable to get back across.

I give them time to either speed up n come up my inside or slow down to drop back n let me in, then my inside indicator comes on, then I start to pull in whether or not they’ve dropped back.

Doesn’t do us any favours when you get the heros such as I witnessed yesterday (as I’m sure a few others on here did) on the M25 anti-clock’ in the roadworks between the A13 & A127. About 08:30.
1st was Scania 8 legger tipper, flat out down lane 3 ( I was passing one of Eddie’s finest at my legal 50mph) when this hero went screaming past (it’s a tad narrow there too with 3 wagons side by side) he was followed shorly by another hero in a 4 wheel box van (about 14 tonne gross I would’ve said) I was back in the n/s lane by then but this fellow was passing everything he could in lane 3 & then lastly still in lane 3 the Elton Lines container wagon, flat out with his phone pressed to his ear :unamused:
Nice one lads, thanks for promoting our proffesionalism  bet you’re not the type who thinks Vosa & traffic officers are all a bunch of so & so’s are you? :unamused:

It amazing how many times you see lane 1 completely clear, but lane 2 and 3 queued up. Drivers will sit in lane 2 for miles. The only time they seem to move is when you get past them and actually go into lane 1 bacuse it’s clear for a fair distance.

The M6/M5 juntion at star city in brum sounds familiar, i`ve been down there 3 times this week and everytime, hard shoulder and lane 1 were completly clear! 2 and 3 just totally [ZB] up with traffic. The looks on other drivers faces as i tootled past them in lane 1 was priceless!! :open_mouth: :grimacing:

LoL, gotta say, i love this trick!! The amount of times i go to overtake a “Car user”, get nearly all the way past and then he/she (mainly she`s  ) decides to speed up and keep up with my back wheels.

On goes the N/S blinker and then look for the face of :open_mouth: :open_mouth: as she realises i`m gonna squish her for being a complete arrogant ■■■■!

Car drivers should be fined for doing less than 60 on motorway!

The simple and common sense thing to do, that all experienced drivers do, is slow down a few clicks, and let the slightly faster vehicle overtake. There seems to be a breed of selfish drivers out there that for what ever reason think it’s cleaver to leave other drivers out to dry in the middle lane.
I’ve been driving for a living for nearly 25 years, my old man started doing the job in the 60s, and I was always told that courtesy, and manners ( when ever possible) is the way to prove your good at the job.
I don’t expect things will ever get better, because common sense isn’t part of the driving test, but I will carry on doing my bit.

There was a guy in a wincanton unit going up the M5 yesterday and i pulled out to overtake, just past jct 10, off the A417…that tosserkept me out in lane 2 till i finally managed to crawl past, 2 miles from jct 9. Not once did he give up or slow down for second to let me past.

Wheres all the courtesy gone?

I think people need to just chilled out abit, why get so annoied. I do find it frustrating when people pull in to early on motorways but a good look ahead just before they pull can tell you whether your likely to have to come to a stop suddenly and if you have to knock it down a couple of clicks for a moment then so be it.

How is it his fault that you dont know the limitations of your vehicle?

I had a laugh last night.

J19 eastbound on the a12. Two lanes merge with two lanes from Chelmsford to make three. A corsa in lane 2 joining the a12 was ahead, saw me coming up and slowed down until level with my cab. Only once their lane disappeared did they jolt to lane 1 and fall back, overtake and shoot off into the distance. I must remind you that had they maintained their initial speed, I would have never caught up 

lol i know the limitations of my truck but im not gonna keep takin my foot off the gas evertime i come close to his back end… so i`ll overtake!

All im saying is that, rather than keep me hanging for the best part of 7 miles, why not slow down enough for me to pass him? if theres a wagon trying to overtake me and its taking a while, i dnt hesitate but to slow and let him past me. its called courtesy and your obviously one of them drivers who hates being overtaken and thinks "[ZB] the rest of ya!!

This thread fully illustrates why the petition needs supporting. With the exception of 1 or 2 people, this entire thread is filled with comments from “why should I” drivers who are sole reason for the creation of the petition in the first place. :unamused: Thick as ■■■■…

LoL and to think, driving vans is a lazy drivers work! :grimacing:

I love hammering it around in vans, makes a nice change, but it is rare to be ask to take it out. What do you drive?

I can see what you’re saying Rob, but personally I don’t want to see loads of overtaking bans in the UK. However even if all truck driver behave themsleves and only overtake when the speed differnce is large enough do to so resonably quickly it still won’t be good enough for many car drivers. They want a clear laneot do what ever speed they can, although my experience is more car driver hold me up by staying in the lane when they can move over than trucks ever do.

These bans are really only pandering to motorists, having read a few of the studies from the UK and Europe trying to justify them, the reality is they don’t actually save motorists much in the way of time or average speed, The one on the end of the A14 was shown to reduce journey times by 6 to 22 seconds and a study in France showed it increased motorists average speed by about 2kn/h.

However when I see 2 trucks side by side for miles on end, I agree both are a couple of [zb]'s, at least one of them needs to grow up a bit and reduce thier speed.

Very true, we have a couple of sprinters at our place and you have to be one of the blue eyed brigade to get to drive them.

Im driving a DAF LF 7.5tn skeletal/ that and a MAN 7.5tn..........prefer the DAF though. Im doing an “experience job” for the time being, as i only passed my C licence last year, We have class 2`s at work aswell, but again…blue eyed brigade comes first.

Agreed, the "overtakee" should drop a few clicks! it has nothing to do with "growing up", otherwise endless amount of faster vehicles would be forever fighting the back doors because were way too “mature” to overtake! Dont ya think? :unamused:

hi all i have a 10 sceond rule i take my foot of the pedal for that peroid of time but when i am overtaking another truck it always seems to be the muppet with the curtains halfway across the drivers window that wants to race you down the dual carriageway
