wouldn’t imagine the difference in journey times between a 730-500 is as much as say a 420-500?.

I reckon its probably more. Theres a lot to be said for running on the limiter 99% of the time

Surely a R500 is on top of the job at 44t compared to a R420/440 keeping journey times higher, and it’s initial purchase price is what £10k more?. How much more on top of the job can a 700+ motor be for the substantial extra outlay?.

We hardly run at 44T… With a Full load of hanging meat. T&T combined is approx 34T.

Yes a R500 is more than capable of doing the same work… So why do we have 3 x R730’s and 6 x R620’s including a limited edition Dark Diamond… Easy to answer that, Because we want to !!

And I bet you never have to advertise to
Sell them and still get top money for them at any age. Quality equipment that is over specced will last longer and be worth more once you have done with it.

Spot on…

Not necessarily. You run at 34t mostly and you’ve got an engine that size? Glad I don’t pay for your diesel…Getting the cost of extras back on vehicles isn’t always that easy these days…even on a Fanny’s Scanny… .

I get that you can buy what you want - of course you can, no problem. Just don’t pretend you need it…'cos that Premium or any standard wagon would do the same job for a lot less cash, both in the buying and running…even though it might not be what you (and your drivers) want!

I didn’t say we needed it… I said we wanted it.

What is wrong with wanting to have nice kit and taking a bit of pride in what we do. We have been in this game for a while and have put blood / sweat & tears into making it what it is now. We do hardly no empty running at all, ask my drivers. I recently sent a truck to the middle of Italy & back to the UK and back to Italy again & back to the UK with less than 30km empty running in 3 weeks the driver was away.

If you have got a R500 doing 9mpg or a R730 doing 9mpg whats the difference ■■?

The time you save with the R730’s is that it doesn’t slow down on hills, It will drop half a gear and stay at 90km all the way up. when the truck is covering up to 800km a day and the driver is away for a month at a time, you will be suprised how much extra work can get done in that month…

Apart from when Ray drives them that is… He gets about 3mpg out of them :grimacing:

Fair enough. But if what you say is true, why do so few other haulage companies do the same as yourselves and run huge power plants? If the figures really do make sense in the way you describe, saving so much valuable time etc… I am rather surprised there aren’t more companies doing the same. I have driven a few V8 Scannies and they are decent enough, but economy is not really it’s best feature!

I suspect your argument is mostly a little self-justification for running vehicles you want and don’t actually need and taken purely from a business point of view they don’t stand up completely. If you were running at full weight all the time it would perhaps make more sense. However, you are quite right - each to their own!

If you’re happy that’s all that matters!

(I’ll shut up now, but I’m still glad i don’t pay the diesel bills…)

Makes me smile how many experts on here give there advice free of charge. On how other people should run there obvious successfull business I bet the dragons den tycoons are ■■■■■■■■ themselves in fear for their jobs

Only seen this on the 2nd time of reading… ha ha - made me laugh.

FYI - Fuel Bill in Nov & Dec was £100k a fortnight…

Good on you mate, the truck looks lovely. I wish I got to use something like that everyday.

It seems to me that White’s are a tightly run and efficient firm that have a good customer base.High end equipment obviously works for them and their clients, and I would suspect that the drivers are rather happy as well. I’m sure he’s done his sums.

is that for white and red?

A mate of mine was at an event hosted by Shell and he was talking to the top guy from Fowler Welch, their Red diesel bill was £250k per month a couple of years ago. Their focus was on more efficient fridges!

white white white a very nice truck that a nice addition to your fleet,i read in a earlier post you could get two premiums for the same price I know what I would rather drive,i drive a r620 for a chap who subbies to a close neighbour of yours doing the same work, and its nice to have the power especially when going up the hills to Portugal and spain and even better when coming back when you have a full load of fruit
my only moan is I have got rungis Monday night

Just white… Use approx 4000 ltrs red per week.

I think it’s great to see a company investing in these tough times ,and looking forward>>>

You’d have to be off your ■■■■ to pay £138k for a wagon!

Cracks me up this “special edition” lark, it’s like, your alright mate ill just have the bog standard one for £30k less without all the svempas BS.

But its all about flying the flag for your company.
For e.g the company i work for run 420 toplines 400 highlines 480s etc but i have got the only V8 500 all colour coded with the bells and whistles etc as its the flagship of the company.
The only difference is with Whites is that if they can do that with all their trucks then why shouldn’t they?
Its just cooler :sunglasses:

From July to September i drove an almost brand new r480 topline with everything. Changed down probably according to many here now when I drive a R580 1,2million km on the clock, steel front… tuned close to 700hp, can almost keep up with the 730 , 620 i left behind in the hills. Anyway I feel so much more relaxed when it has some grunt and not having to change gear all the time. Don’t miss that crappy 480 engine at all, it’s btw being replaced by a 620 since none wants to drive it…
I even could take a couple of € less if the truck has some grunt. Having energy left when the day is over is my meaning worth a lot!

(i drive on north norway most of the time)

Or buy a two year old Premium (which in 99% of cases does the job just fine) and a small house with the saving…

Special edition vehicles are the manufacturers way of selling you a lot of tat you don’t need and bewitching you into paying a large additional premium for the privilege…

And if they ran a fleet of Premiums no one would be talking about them and hardly any of you would ave ny idea who they are

I totally see the the point of having a big cab truck with all the trim and toys inside and decent paint on the outside but i dont get the whole big 700hp thing.

^^^ this is spot on …word of mouth is the best form of advertising so having kit that stands out is a good way of achieving this

Fairplay to you mate, your money, your kit, your company, everyones an expert on here.
If your living in it for weeks and driving it for thousands of kms a week, have the best you can get.
A lot of the negatives on here a just jealous, knowing that they have never got a cat in hells chance of ever sitting in let alone driving one regularly.

For all those who think Whites are “wasting” their money on premium vehicles, firstly it’s their money to waste, secondly, what size engine is in your car? Why not buy the smallest capacity engine you can? After all you’re only allowed to do 70!

read somewhere else that Whites are run like a proper old fashion transport firm.
fair play and good luck to them.

I like to be able to safely overtake and also do the odd track day…

My view is if you can afford it then its up to you what you buy/run.
But if you’re strapped up to the eyeballs to do it then that is stupid.
