When they launched the 730 , I got the chance to drive this one. What a truck , absolute monster of a thing. On the route we had to take it,up a steep bank,it was on the limiter 3/4 of a mile before a 480 I took out after. Wonder who bought it ?

That is a beauty… I think the one we have bought is the same colour… Cant be sure as we havn’t even seen our new one… Bought it over the phone…
Trust me, i have sat in your new one. It is the most beautiful truck on the road. The paint is fantastic and has a really deep shine. You will not be dissapointed!
And thats something coming from a dyed in the wool volvo man.
You’d have to be off your ■■■■ to pay £138k for a wagon!
Cracks me up this “special edition” lark, it’s like, your alright mate ill just have the bog standard one for £30k less without all the svempas BS.

I do agree that for the extra money you could make a better job of customising a standard model. As much as I like big powered trucks, you could surely make more profit from running a fleet of R500s rather than R730s, I wouldn’t imagine the difference in journey times between a 730-500 is as much as say a 420-500?.

I reckon its probably more. Theres a lot to be said for running on the limiter 99% of the time

Or buy a two year old Premium (which in 99% of cases does the job just fine) and a small house with the saving…
Special edition vehicles are the manufacturers way of selling you a lot of tat you don’t need and bewitching you into paying a large additional premium for the privilege…

We were not bewitched into buying anything… We bought what we wanted. We bought what we liked. We bought what the drivers like. These trucks are not running up and down the M1 eveyday… We are going to all corners of Europe. A 2 year old Premium… No Thanks… Might buy one as a shunter though…

Surely a R500 is on top of the job at 44t compared to a R420/440 keeping journey times higher, and it’s initial purchase price is what £10k more?. How much more on top of the job can a 700+ motor be for the substantial extra outlay?.

We hardly run at 44T… With a Full load of hanging meat. T&T combined is approx 34T.
Yes a R500 is more than capable of doing the same work… So why do we have 3 x R730’s and 6 x R620’s including a limited edition Dark Diamond… Easy to answer that, Because we want to !!

And I bet you never have to advertise to
Sell them and still get top money for them at any age. Quality equipment that is over specced will last longer and be worth more once you have done with it.

Not necessarily. You run at 34t mostly and you’ve got an engine that size? Glad I don’t pay for your diesel…Getting the cost of extras back on vehicles isn’t always that easy these days…even on a Fanny’s Scanny… .
I get that you can buy what you want - of course you can, no problem. Just don’t pretend you need it…'cos that Premium or any standard wagon would do the same job for a lot less cash, both in the buying and running…even though it might not be what you (and your drivers) want!

Sorry cold up north but i dont think that a R730 that costs £30K? more than a R500 is going to be worth £30k more used at 3 or 5 years old or last any longer than said R500. I can see the benefit of running high BHP motors but i think it reaches a level where it is plainly just overkill. Could understand one R730 as a fleet flagship but running a whole fleet of them cannot make economic sense.

I didn’t say we needed it… I said we wanted it.
What is wrong with wanting to have nice kit and taking a bit of pride in what we do. We have been in this game for a while and have put blood / sweat & tears into making it what it is now. We do hardly no empty running at all, ask my drivers. I recently sent a truck to the middle of Italy & back to the UK and back to Italy again & back to the UK with less than 30km empty running in 3 weeks the driver was away.
If you have got a R500 doing 9mpg or a R730 doing 9mpg whats the difference ■■?
The time you save with the R730’s is that it doesn’t slow down on hills, It will drop half a gear and stay at 90km all the way up. when the truck is covering up to 800km a day and the driver is away for a month at a time, you will be suprised how much extra work can get done in that month…
Apart from when Ray drives them that is… He gets about 3mpg out of them
