There was a lot of pilfering going on at the time, so Bertie Marshall was in the back of the trailer expecting to catch the thief, I think. :unamused:

i worked in the warehouse with a stranraer lad ,called pepe,ie derek paterson,a cracking lad, them were the days :smiley: :smiley: :smiley:

If I recall correctly I think Pepe trained at Mcharries in Stranraer as a car mechanic before joining Dukes.

Anyone recall what become of Dave Ritchie another Stranraer driver.

Have lots of not so fond memories of Eric McGowan.

Davie Ritchie is in poor health at the moment and doesn’t get out much. Someone off FB who knows one of his daughter’s is going to pass a message of support on to him from me, very sound fella Davie.

Dave Penn;

Great Guy & very Sad to hear that Davie is not well, Please pass on my best wishes if you manage to make contact, He may not recall me as its been a very long time since we spoke.

Dave.

Will do Dave, Davie was certainly a good workmate and a quality, experienced driver, did some double man work with him when the French farmers were Kicking off in the 80’s and stopping reefer trucks and destroying the load, if it was lambs, we got through without too much trouble, it was frozen lambs to Boulogne so not too far into France.

Regards
Dave Penn;

Pepe works for Adams who subbie for marks and spencer.
davie was last working for monty

The first F 88 owned by Woodsides.

Saturday night on the Larne Line (thats what we called the road) was always flat out with the Boys all heading for the boat. Trucks from all over the province and some from the South came this way. Most of the operators are no longer with us,Kelly Freight,Persitt International,Dukes,Seaforde,Murphy Int,Joe Millar to name but a few.It was great as a kid,141s,F12s,142s,mercs,Transcons,you could tell the trucks by engine noise before you seen them. The loss of all the hauliers liverys over the years (by way of takeovers,retirement,etc) and the loss of the variety of motors being run,to me make the roads duller today than what they used to be. Would like to know what you all think about this Cheers Steve

spot on there matey !,seen one today you’ve seen them all.no disrespect to the lads that spend hours upon hours tarting and cleaning their vehicles,but you could’nt pay me enough to spend that much attention to a wagon,and i grew up only wanting to be a lorry driver and nothink else was coming close.same as when you get on the motorway,its so teadious its become mind numbing and it aint gonna get any better. :frowning: :confused:

your right there that used to be best night of the week i was on east west,

Good times, i was with Dukes for 6years running out of huddersfield. Maybe around 93/94 Given a F10 Twin steer with full air kit, red sun visor and n/irish reg.KDZ 8977 thought i was king of the road. a good company to run for with some top guys. Andy Hendry his mate Duncan to name but two of the stranra boys. Happy times. John O`Reilly

Its sad to see so many top haulage companies go by the way side, but its also sad to see how many Irish companies with Polska flags or scarfes in the window :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Anybody remember MOST green&red DAFs I think it stood for McConnel Overseas Transport they carried a lot of yarn to Bradford in the early 70s.
Eddie.

For Eddie M.O.S.T was McConnell Overseas Transport from Ballyclare(old hometown).They ran a fleet of D A F trucks 2800 or 3300 maybe both I remember them being orangy red in colour with a white stripe . The company then became Ballyclare Freight Services (I think through change of ownership or something)keeping the same livery. This was changed many years later to a mainly all white cab but the trailers stayed orange in colour,this company is also no longer with us being taken over by Montgomery Transport about 2 or 3 years ago Cheers Steve
