Northern Irish Hauliers no longer with us

By whiplash_012 at 2008-11-16.Anyone remember these? Not sure if they`re still trading.

Remember speaking to a TC driver in rugby truckstop a few years back ,him and another driver where on there way out to france with a lowloader and spare unit to recover a fridge that rolled at the tunnels in Lyon. Have not seen any of the trucks in a while come to think of it.

trevor cathers was a good rally driver, not seen any about for a few years now and dont see any about the house on the road near omagh. a good man for info would be hh ,a member on here, dont know how often he comes on though. if you look him up you will see his pics of the family company, harvey grant.

Does anyone have an pictures of Tony Hagan and his fleet of vehicles? Trucker Ash has sent me some. Hagan Transport Ireland was out of Fintona Co. Tyrone N Ireland. He was quite big before he packed it in hauling for the USA forces to German bases and others in Europe. Anyone with pictures available I would love to see. Tony is a distant relative. He is out of the business now but lives in Tyrone still.

Thanks guys
Mick In Denver (ex Tyrone)

Several drivers from Knighton in Mid Wales drove for Murphy’s.

Reids also… Always flat out from A to B:-

can remember murphy’s transcons, also can remember a company called glensway with transcons around the same time.another name i recall was shamrock express.

Carna dukes and montgomery are the only trucks i ever see from northern ireland now

Carna dukes and montgomery are the only trucks i ever see from northern ireland now

dukes went ages ago, didnt they get shut down/brought out by montgomerys?

anyone got any more pics of the old northern irish trucks? would love to see them, to this day the irish boys present a cacking looking truck in my opinion

Aye Montgomery’s took over all the Duke’s work and possibly a lot of the trucks and trailers when Winston & Ronnie Duke, and a quite a few of their senior management, had their professional repute and the Company’s whole UK Operater’s licence revoked for a 10 yr period.

Whatever anyone says Duke’s were alright to work for and I had many happy years with them good money, always in the bank on time, and always good new tackle for the job.  Never in my driving career have I been given so many new latest spec Volvo, Mercedes or Scania trucks to drive  Even managed to get a depot manager sacked for his incompetence and that was a very, very, very good day

The trouble seemed to start when they got a contract with Tossco and started employing idiots to cover the 24/7 trunking, planning and management of it and the whole house of cards collapsed :open_mouth:

Trevor Cathers ,I read on here has moved to Scotland, came by the house a few weeks back and no trucks about although the story on about said he was running trucks still,I too worked for Dukes out of Larne, money always in the bank ,no problems in that respect, just that ,every one of your bosses seemed to be working off a different hymn sheet, the traffic office obviously wanted the work done and weren, too worried how many hours you worked ,but if you did too many hours, you’d get a wee message to see “Bertie”(Transport Manager),in his office for a rollicking, and if there was a lot of work on don’t near the garage,we need the lorry and if you took the truck in the garage, the traffic office would ring the DRIVER! asking how long are YOU! going to be , too many different agendas, but the trucks were looked after and they tried to run the job right,I can’t understand why they didn’t appeal the TC’s decision, they just seemed to give up,but i would go back if I was looking for a trucking job, there’s worse to work for .

Hi Derek (trucking482002), good to hear from another ex Duke’s driver and can only agree with everything you have said  Would ‘Bertie’ be Bertie Marshall
I worked out of the Stakehill, Middleton Depot from 1980/87 and then did another 2 stints for them from the early 90’s, out of the Heysham, Crick & Huddersfield depot’s up until 2000 and it really seemed to me that the contract with Tesco brought them down. At one time you couldn’t drive on the M6/M1 without seeing a Dukes motor going North or South.
Good days and some good memories :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

Dave sorry for the delay, yes Bertie is" the bertie marshll" he was a legend at Dukes ,years ago he had a bad motorbke accient and so rumour has it ,he would tell you, people call me two faced, but if I was would i wear this one!,did you work at manchester depot ,I only worked in Ireland for Dukes although my sister lives in Coventry and the traffic office in Portadown would arrange lifts down for me and back and free ferry trips,I did always wonder why Dukes didnt fight the licence issues.
There were always so many rumours about Dukes ,if you didn’t hear one by dinnertime then we would start one !.
