The worst chippy I ever had was in Carlisle (Full of bones) with the one I had in Scarborough (all batter, no fish) not far behind. Chips were like bits of wood rather than sliced potato soft to the bite as well.
The Best chippy - Thirsk town square (near the black bull? - has it closed down?), which I only spotted as a prospect over a different chippy around the corner, because there was a two-wide queue coming out of the shop, so I figured “It must be good if all the locals are queuing to get in there!”. Indeed it was.

How does anyone buy a house up north when
(a) like for like, they’re the same price as houses down my way
and
(b) Your mortgage is still going to be based on the same number of earnings multiple, so if you earn half a southerner’s wage, you’re only going to buy a house if you marry another truck driver in a civil ceremony, and pool your wages.

I couldn’t afford to move to Warrington, and I resent the argument that “house are cheaper oop north” when they’re plainly more expensive unless “up north” is defined as remote places like Cape Wrath, Saddleworth Moor, Kyle of Locharsch, or whatever.
