New Stobart Trucks

They’re not the same as the R cabs, they are lower in general, you can see this when they’re side by side, steps, windscreen and doorline is all lower. They also have the engine tunnel up near seat level, no flat floor, they do have cupholders though…2 of them, shocking for a Scania. Got a 4 over 4 box with no splitter. It’s a lot like P series just bit higher, be interesting to know how much cheaper than a totally bog basic equivalent R420 would be.

They use the floorpan from the 4 series R cab as far as I can see & if, as you say, the floor is almost at seat level then that confirms it, so again, WTF is the problem with driving it? That is a decent enough size for a cab, not as good as a bigger one obviously, but more than adequate :unamused:

zb hell , what do we need to pay for fuel for, horse and carts used to do the same job years ago, would you want one , no.
ive had a g-cab for a few weeks and also the odd volvo , theres a world of difference between them, the volvos so easy to drive , makes the job so easy .
as i say if were saying itll do the job , lets have horse and carts , get them old fodens and erfs back on the road, theyll do the job .
its not just about look at my top of the range , all singing dancing truck, its about whats best for the job , and after driving and comparing both , the volvos win hands down .
on a foot note i havent got a clue whether stobarts lease , buy or how they purchase them , but 1500 pounds might sound a lot now , but what about when you come to get rid of them ,how desirable atre they, i cant see a massive que of firms, drivers whod want that spec truck , so you might save 1500 pounds now but in the long term youll loose a lot more :exclamation:

No you’re missing the point, yes, I’ll accept that the G range is not as big as an R range or FH Globetrotter, but apart from a few less inches in height there’s not a lot of difference to an R cabbed model.

There is no way I would EVER suggest going back to an ERF or a Foden (I personally think that they were absolute crap) or even the F10/12 or 3 series cabs, that’s not progress, but not every job requires a supermegatoptrotter.

Firms started buying all the big cabs to attract drivers when there was a shortage, now there are more drivers than jobs, so I expect that replacement cycles will be extended & if new lorries are bought, that the spec will come down.

To a certain extent this recession will bring a bit of reality back into the haulage industry, as I have said, not every job requires a top of the range lorry & there are plenty of us driving around in huge cabs doing day/night work or trunking, this is a waste of money really, the more your company pays out on your lorry, the less it has to put in your wage packet, I know what I’d prefer

Not sure if this is unusual or if I can remember correctly. I was going to work the other week and saw a Merc Actros Eddie Stobart truck. I thought they only had Scania’s and Volvo’s.

daidap on here drives one for eddie.

as for the debat on the scania… it seems that they have come up with a comprmise for drivers and owners , and that no driver wants to drive a p cab scania but some owners dont want to pay out for a r cab so its seems to be a happy medium.

Arent the Mercedes used on the Knauf contract?

most of the mercs are in knauf colours and run out off sittingbourne ,purfleet and cwmbran there are a few in stobart wrap aswell(im not a eddie spotter my mate works for them) you can even see a few de wrapped and white as there due to be defleeted soon

I’ve seen a few Actros in Stobarts livery, not many though. Quite a few MAN TGA’s running around too and there’s even an Iveco Stralis somewhere, can be thankful we don’t have to drive one of those at least.

same at place where i work they started buying FH globetrotters XL models a few years back now there back to buying FM globetrotters they do same job the FMs have the 480 engines they pull better than the FH 460s, them globetrotters xl was nice motors but lads at our place do maybe 1 night out a week if that so they was abit of a waste.

it dosent matter bt the size of your ship its the motion of the ocean,a volvo fm 480 is better than a volvo gobby xl460 that is if u were purley driving, but if u were living and driving id go for the bigger ship to many people think size iseverything guess thats y they only have a window box and have a john dere parkd in the garage

Sittingbourne and Aveley have got rid of all their Mercs now. Ours are due to be defleeted in March. There are 6 of us in Cwmbran - 4 in Stobart colours and 2 Knauf. Newport has 12-15 Mercs in a mixture of both colours.

That reg number looks familiar . . . . . . .

I think it will be a subbie; DTS = Dalton Transport Services who are near to Thirsk (in a village called Dalton, IIRC!! LOL). I did some work for them quite a few years ago and they had a couple of trucks in Stobbie’s colours and I’m fairly sure that reg was used back then.

I know that they had an FH in Stobart colours; the lad driving it jumped ship one day and went to work as a planner at Crick!! He wasn’t popular . . . . .

The transport manager of DTS was Paul Tolmie who is now the TM at Reed Bordall. Big step up!

Hi Marcus,

yes it is Dalton Transport subbing for Stobart. They still run waggons in their own colours dark blue with a white roof - seen Renaults, an Iveco and a Scania - they have DTS reg numbers…

Not to be confused with DTS International from Cramlington, who are white with big Norweigan Specialists livery, mainly Renaults and they have DTS reg numbers as well

Cheers

I thought they only had r420 Scanias. Bit low on power compared to the rest id say!!!

if youre comparing them to the r420 with the auto box weve got , begrudgingly i have to admit the g380 with the manual boxes do seem to pull better .
go down the a1 with the 420,s and any kind of hill and they die straight off where the 380,s seem to dig in and pull a lot better , not just me thinking that as every one seems to say it.
im also struggling to get less than 10 m.p.g out of them , wheras the 420, s were high 8 to low 9, most of the 380,s have only 15 k on them, wheras 420,s are 75 k .
i got back in a 420 auto today and it seemed hard work up to the manual 380,s,
but against the fh 480,s we had there still zb,
