Too many people now days are weighed down with debts/mortgages that they struggle to keep on top of, meaning that they are too afraid to stand up for themselves regarding work. As I understand it Beaver served his country and has a military pension, so possibly isn’t in a situation where he needs every penny. Good for him! So those that are trying to make out that there is more to the story, maybe you’re in a different boat and have a different subservient mindset…
Without meaning any disrespect, the majority of ex servicemen i have worked with are the biggest collective of bellends ever created. If I was ever to employ a driver, I doubt having ex forces on the CV would benefit. Sorry if that offends anyone.

Moocher- I was going from the depot (Preston Brook) to Ineos salt at Runcorn to collect a load. Realised I had left my blower at home (Warrington), so nipped over and collected it. Went over to Ineos and got loaded, and came back past Rock Savage to J12 M56 (returning back to Preston Brook).
Wanted a ■■■■ and a coffee, so nipped down 1 junction to Chester services. I was there for about 3 mins when my cab phone rang and it was one of the planners asking why I was at Chester services. Explained that I wanted a ■■■■ and the planner asked why I didn’t wait until I returned to the depot. I told him that it was as broad as long so I opted for the services.(Better coffee).
He then said that I needed to get back to the depot asap because this other guy was there waiting to swap his crappy unit for mine.
It appears that this planner and his boyfriend Ben decided to then check my movements for the day.
I don’t blame them. You have lost me for sympathy with what you have just said here, this is exactly where the culture of firms spying on their drivers has come from.
I gathered your job was to go from your yard at Preston Brook to Ineos Salt & back, roughly 10 mile round trip. By nipping home for your phone, even if you only lived at the Walton end of Warrington, adds about 10 miles onto the outbound trip, then your detour one junction the wrong way down the M56 coming back to Chester Services has added another 10-15 miles (you’d have probably got back to the depot quicker or in the same time). So thats a 10 mile round trip turned into a 30 odd mile one, for no good reason whatsoever & completely on purpose on your behalf A professional, rational thinking driver shouldn’t be able to justify that as reasonable in their heads.
The demotion from a brand new unit to an old one, might be a sign they have made their mind up

The planner in question on this case phoned me at 12.27 today. I will be going in to work at 09.27 Monday morning.
And going home again unemployed by 9.45 Monday morning.
Yeh but think of the compo.
What compo? I don’t think he’s been there long enough to be eligible to take an unfair dismissal claim to a tribunal. The qualifying period is two years.
Well you have got one over me there mate, I haven’t got a didgeri what the qualifying period is.
However if he is dismissed I am fairly sure the word ‘unfair’ comes into it somewhere, compo or not.
Jesus, the amount of drivers on here defending the crap actions of a plc is staggering. No wonder things like microlise and driver facing cameras are becoming the norm. Lube up, it’ll hurt less

So you think a driver nipping 6 miles the wrong way down a motorway & back to the services because he wants a Costa rather than machine coffee, is behaviour any company trying to make money should accept?
Some drivers need a reality check. We aren’t out on a jolly.
Don’t get me wrong, too many mountains being made out of molehills by office jockeys looking for investigations to launch, but I really can’t see how Downton’s are being unreasonable in this instance. It’s hardly stopping in a layby for 5 minutes for a ■■■ & ■■■■, he’s tripled his journey mileage for no reason & justified the spies doing what they do in doing so!

But do you not think a quiet one to one word of warning would have been sufficient, rather than that jumped up little office 2at building his part up, by making it official, putting it on record and getting a driver on one of their …oh so official, and important disciplinary hearings.

Now, to us Drivers a quiet word off the record would be enough but for a massive company with chains of management and preduces that are to be followed things are done by the book. That is the problem with these large blue chip outfits is that everything is recorded, emails are logged, trackers are logged, phone calls are recorded, even conversations are “overheard” by someone in management. Its all done to distance the company if any crap hits the fan.
I remember getting on the phone to my planner going off my nut about a firm who were messing me about, f’ing and jeff’ing down the phone to him at which point he told me I should stop talking because all calls inbound and outbound are logged on the company servers.

If this is the first instance, then yes.
However, guys can’t moan about being spied on whilst doing stuff like this though. None of us like the trackers and office jockeys spying on us, but the only way we can really fight it is by not doing stuff that’s worth them making a fuss about. If the only findings the spies are offering the bosses is the odd driver stopping for 5 minutes on route for a ■■■■ every now and then, they’ll soon lose interest. But so long as guys like eagerbeaver keep serving them up gifts on a plate by doing 12 mile round trips for a coffee, it’s only to get worse.

Unfortunately my current employer (Downton) have this morning shown themselves to be the same snivelling piles of crap as most other general haulage companies.
Yesterday the truck I have had for a few months was taken off me and given to a new starter, and I was handed an 11 plate steaming pile of damaged and stinking turd. Thought this was a bit odd but didn’t kick up a fuss.
This morning I have had a letter from head office ‘inviting’ me for an interview about misconduct because I have attended my home address in the truck, and ‘gone off route’. It appears the ‘head planner’ at Runcorn (a strange character called Ben) has been spying and telling tales. Funnily enough this chap has just rung me with my start time for Monday. He didn’t like it when I asked him if he enjoys spying on the drivers, and replied “Just doing my job”. To which I replied "Good…I will be doing mine on Monday by telling all the drivers I can find that you are spying on them ".
Next week should be fun
So I will be in on Monday morning
Never mind old chap. There’s always a job in the local circus…as a clown. PMSL

There’s no unfair about it. Any employer can dismiss anyone within the first two years with no reason or explanation given. A tribunal wouldn’t entertain any ‘unfair’ dismissal because of this*
the only exception to this is if the person believes it’s because of their gender or racial identity
