New c/e driver unwanted

sweeper1gg:
Think i have wasted my money doing my hgv c/e,everybody want’s experience witch i can understand. just don’t know how you get a start. they say it is an insurance problem, is this true.

This is just what you have to do, I was in exactly the same position years ago as everyone else on here was or probably has been at some point in time. Everyone goes through it, you need to get your head down, take crap jobs, get the experience and look for better paid jobs constantly. Look at further qualifications; ADR; HiAB; etc I sat on my ADR for 2 years before I got a start on the Chemicals. You’ll get there, it just takes time, sweat, effort and hard work

Thanks some good advice

I’m in the same boat as you OP.

Applied for a few job vacancies who i know take on newbies and never heard anything back. Stupid as it may sound I think its harder for us when companies are looking for drivers as the ones who have the experience get to the top of the pile while us newbies just get immediately binned off in the elimination process. I don’t blame companies. Makes perfect sense to take on someone who has the experience. I would do the same

Think the only chance we have is agencies or striking it lucky with companies who are looking to recruit in the near future and haven’t yet advertised.

For now i’m just giving up and continuing in a different line of work. Might come back to it one day and try again or might not bother…

I got my start from a farmer who also did some haulage - the tackle wasn’t up to much but it gave me experience/confidence

See thats the trouble. now when you say tackle was not up to much but with the new cpc if they catch you with a frayed ratchet strap your gonna get done this is why they have brought it in more fines.

Im in the same position Except ive held class 2 since feb 2010 . Got my experience and knowledge of uk then done my class 1 got full time job then 9 month down the line the ■■■■ paid me off for no reason and since then only had agency work and registered self employed driver.
Recently had stobart offer job now its no down to experience now its im driver cpc trained and that they wouldnt give me full time job coz i havent completed any cpc hr since getting mines in 2010
All red tape m8 . Chin up m8 it will pay off at sum point

dont b+m want drivers ?

Just had some foreign chap ring me from an agency in Manchester, so I told him I had my class 1 he then said oh you no experience have you got experience driving 7.5 because I can’t lie because the dates are on the licence. :frowning: I said I have not driven one but I can no problem. he then said you need experience so I said !what! its a car licence. so I said to him so you would rather somebody with a car licence drive your 7.5 trucks than somebody who has a class 1 with full CPC. I just said listen next time read my application stating I am a new pass and don’t waste my time. GOING OFF AGENCYS FAST…

When I was in your position I invented some experience, worked for me

Will they not ask me for tacho proof

You might get the prospective employer phoning the imaginary one to check references, expierience etc.Haulage industry is prety small world lots of Transport Managers, know others especially in the same area.

In theory it could get easier to get a start quite soon, by that I mean as DCPC deadline approaches…those with Driver Qualification Card will become the ‘employables’…experience will have to become a secondary consideration. Not ideal, but better for newbies…some winners, some losers - all down to DCPC. It’s already happened in PCV sector.

Patience…

HEY… I have an idea :exclamation: if all you really really nice drivers on hear ask your boss to give a newbie a shot. lol

Sweeper. Ref your comment "Will they need tacho proof ?.
No to that.It is only 28 days of records that you have to keep while in work to show the police/Vosa at the road side.
Tell a future employer you drove on analogue tachos, the round disc ones. When you get a job and they down load your digital card, they will see the activity on that.
All job applicants extend the truth. They will not check what or who you worked for.
An airline pilot will make the CV glossy to make him/her stand out from the crowd.Look at me.I am the one for the job.

Not much good if he passed his test two weeks ago.

And if they do happen to want references he’s kind of screwed

Passed CPC, 02-10-13 I was not able to drive until this date. I have applied for so many job’s its unreal plenty of phone call’s but because no experience no job…

Passed CPC, 02-10-13

what’s all this passed CPC crap about. no buggers ever failed it yet due to not having to pass anything, sleep thru the entire 35 hrs and you have attended and that’s all that is required
however if you have been doing the job for nearly 40 yrs and don’t attend the classroom with a trainer who knows ■■■■ all about the job you can no longer drive for a living, total load of bollox :imp:
