MURFITTS

Did Farmer Murfitt still own the show at this point? Anyone here meet the guy? Any opinions?

mmmmm…interesting Sellia, thats the sort of interesting question Mick Murfitt himself would have asked while walking around his yards looking like a farm hand. He would always pick on new drivers who didn’t know him to “gather” bits of info.
I worked there as a driver in the early 90’s…I went back mid to late 90’s as a desk jockey. It was definitely the best place I worked in the UK. I wasn’t reknown for my calm demeanor especially if I thought I was being asked a stupid question but I was always allowed to “share” my opinion if I was invited behind Mark Murfitts brown door for a meeting.
I even liked Ray Brown…a bit
Overall best people I ever worked with and for…especially the drivers on my desk between 96/99
It was hard work and a lot of fun…we even had a footie team!!!

you’d get done by trading standards calling that a footie team  and for saying it was hard work as well come to think of it

definitely agree it was a cracking place to work though - despite what all the experts (i.e those with no idea) might spout :unamused:

They are my memories and I’ll work hard if I want too

Big Dorris:
To be honest I never saw him again, and judging by his old shagger of a motor I think he needed it more than I did !!!

No surprises there then .
Probably see him now selling the Big Issue with another old dog on a rope.

heisterkamp/murfitts 1999 zeebrugge

heisterkamp/murfitts 1999 paris

they used to do quite a bit for murfitts towards the end, some good lads on that firm if you could get them to stop for long enough

Big Dorris:
I sometimes miss that life and It doesnt see like 12 years ago but I have a family now and my own business

I’m exactly the same- I did the Caravan Club from 96-2000 and thought it was the easiest job around at the time. I left for a brief time to go to a competitor but soon went back. No pressure, no running bent, total freedom!

I used to put the hours in, but also knew all the beaches on the Genova-Rome road, and in summer would always go on the old ss1 for this reason rather than the inland A1…Once got fined for doing 90 in a 70 though and was escorted by the Carabinieri to a cash point straight through a tiny village with a 3.5t limit and weak bridge:shock: I used to love the drop in the centre of Rome at that department store- an excuse for several hours’ sightseeing!

No flash motors, but the EuroTechs were ok, the N-reg DAFs better. EuroStars were just coming in when I left.

Didn’t like Bremen (once did four Manchester-Bremen-Manchesters in a row- bored rigid), the A26 Calais-Reims (don’t count the kilometre markers- like counting sheep!) and the stupid waste of a day going from Whittlesey to Littleport for service. Used to do six weeks away and never saw a fight anywhere, like someone else said. Still miss it…

Do you remember alan dean used to work for murfitts, lived in bolton. He finished up on the romania run then left to work for bergans at trafford park running rumo for them.He was a mate of mine we used to work together at kenny harveys at farnworth.Last time i saw him was on the walsanbourg border late 90s.Id like to know what he,s doing now,i heard a rumor he wed this rumo bird who he met when he worked for murfitts and brought her back here with him, dont know whether thats true or not.Im retired now so im out of touch.

sorry dave, the only one i know from bolton that brought a rumo bird home was roy tatlock an old ME driver i first met in greece, he smuggled her in years ago, he also had a little spell at murfitts, smallish fella wore glasses
i knew a few murfitts from bolton but that name doesn’t ring a bell.
there were many lancashire/cheshire lads at murfitts and i recall a deano but he was from out blackburn/burnley way

i believe steve (city cruiser) is on for S&K too, surprised me as they have never had a great reputation, maybe undeserved though for all i know

City Cruiser is definitely on for S&K, he hasn’t been with them for long.
I met him at Habay on the May Bank holiday Monday, when Scotch Eddie and I were also parked up there for the holiday.
He said the money wasn’t great, but the work was dead easy.
(So Skint maybe, but definitely not Knackered  )

I have to side with Biggus i saw very little trouble in 27 years in Europe
and i used all the watering holes mentioned and many more, i watched
a couple of Murffit drivers have a scrap at the PUB one night and frankly
it was hillarious coz they were so drunk they could not hit each other and
when a punch did connect a big cheer went up from those watching.
and most other trouble was normally a driver winding up another driver to much and then one punch all over. but one weekend i was in Geiselwind
in 1996 and we went to the night club down the road and it went of in there
that night with elements of the 101st Airborne (us army) who were on
manouveres locally and that was like a John Wayne Western proper stuff
but i dont recall anybody getting badly hurt :open_mouth: :open_mouth:
PS i missed the Herald as well but i did join the SAS

Well Lester could cause a fight all on his own, trouble is he normally lost

is lester still about, last time i spoke to him he was getting ready for a little HMP, courtesy of C & E

i knew a few murffits men as well although not by name, but by what they drank.
i never saw them looking or getting involved in trouble.
i think the fact they were such a big company,it was easy to accuse them.
if one had a row the lot were branded.
/like all companies and countries, everyone has the a***oles who cant hold their beer.
murffits had them but so had plenty of other companies including irish companies i worked for.
i did europe for 25 years and never saw any much trouble in any of the watering holes.
i think there was a lot of over playing stories by some drivers who couldnt think straight let alone tell the truth.
