I wasn’t planning on driving again, but reinstated my license last year and then spent £300 on a drivers cpc course. I just see it as an ‘extra string to my bow’ in a rapidly changing world. I also bought a ‘truckers’ satnav and got a digi card. Total spend less than £400. That equates to a typical week’s take home pay. Needless to say that money has quickly been ‘repaid’ by actually doing some driving work this year.

In its current format the drivers cpc is a complete joke, but it enables you to work as a vocational driver and earn dosh.

one thing you dont seem to consider miss marple is this

if you know drivers are so thick and lazy they can not find a way out themselves but are always looking to see what others are doing so that they might do the same thing, would you tell them ? would you help them find other work ? and more to the point would you cut your own throat by doing it ?

i object
i would never hurl insults or abuse at real drivers. the guys who can really drive get my full appreciation for the skills they have.

i just dont class the morons who drive automatics and are lost without a sat nav as a real driver,

if they must use hi tech stuff then have that google maps thing, its brilliant for planing your route and you can get to see the area on street view as if your standing there, now that bit of kit is a real good thing, but to blindly follow a sat nav and then end up stuck somewhere, well it tells me all i need to know about that drivers skills or lack of.

how the hell did i drive for 26 years without an accident, without hitting a low bridge, without ending up stuck up a lane were i couldn’t get out of ? and of course without a sat nav ?

is it because i am the best driver around in the world ? or is it just because i learned how to drive and how to think like a driver would think

i would suggest its just common sense rather than any special skills i have compared to anyone else, but it does seem like common sense is a rare thing with the new breed.

jump in a cab stick it in auto tap in a post code and off you go on your way to god knows what or where you will end up, but if you end up in trouble you can just blame the sat nav rather than there own thick heads

Wtf for? :open_mouth: …As I said it ain’t the bridges that are the problem, it’s down to driver negligence or incompetence …or both.
It’s like saying widen all tight or blindside bays to make useless drivers able to back in to them, and at the same time ban all extendible trailers as they are even worse to get in. :unamused:

The answer is educating drivers, most of us have had it drummed in to us about bridges, to the point where we even notice them when driving our cars.
It’s like teaching your kids to look both ways on the road, the older they get it eventually becomes second nature.
And to get back to sat navs, again they are not in themselves the problem. It’s the combination of total sat nav reliance, driver incompetence and a bit of negligence thrown in, that is the biggest recipe for all ■■■■ ups on the road…, especially bridge strikes.

Rural farms and bussiness still need deliveries and god forbid the local furniture needs a delivery of mattresses or or a sofa delivered. How about the local spar shop. I think these so called villagers need to wake up abit if it bans hgvs from local roads that should include all hgvs without exception then watchem complain when the bins aren’t empited

I used to deliver glass products to a firm on an industrial estate on a farm a couple of miles down a single-track road with passing places. Locals were used to it and just backed into said passing places. That was in Oxfordshire, so they’re not all idiots and Nimbys.
On one visit, a buzzard swooped down a few feet in front of me and flew along till there was a gap in the trees that line that road. I had to slow up to avoid him at one stage. Fantastic.
Didn’t have the presence of mind to record it, but it’s a favourite memory.
