There has been a motion put forward to force all HGVs to use commercial sat-nav to prevent them using village roads which are deemed unsuitable. The motion has been put forward by Oxfordshire County Council in an effort to get rid of HGVs from some of their villages.
Do you think it is a good idea to have ‘suitable’ sat-nav as a requirement or is it just a few drivers, those that get stuck under a bridge, that are giving the industry a bad rep?
Its not the device’s fault, it’s the driver’s. As a proffessional driver, I always plan my route if I’m going somewhere unfamiliar. The sat nav is there as an aide. MK1 eyeball rules.
Load of ■■■■■■■■,I’ve used a normal car sat nav for the past 9 years with no issues combined with a bit of forward planning,I’m not forking out for a commercial one because a VERY small minority of drivers are clueless ■■■■■.
Out of the 4 pictures,2 are stuck under a bridge, one ain’t even in this country and the other is a puddle jumper that got stuck reversing into a delivery point…bridges are signed well enough to not need sat navs so they are basing the need for HGV sat navs on what exactly?
Maybe the truck specific ones could just do away with country lanes & side streets in the mapping or sort the software so they could just show the major roads when used as in truck mode…can’t be bloody hard, surely. My TT5150 cant even get the bleeding speeds right for a motorway! But simply, if you get guided to a road that looks unsuitable, have a little walk and see, as it may save yaself a whole heap of trouble!

That would be brilliant along with “sorry mate, I can’t deliver to you because I can’t find you. Your council ordered us to use satnavs that don’t show country roads and villages.”
In response to your last point its only the odd few drivers who end up stuck under bridges or going down unsuitable lanes. There are over 400,000 lorries doing hundreds of miles a day all over the country, day in, day out without incident.

Load of ■■■■■■■■ indeed, it ain’t sat navs that are the cause of it, it’s those ■■■■ poor drivers that can not think for themselves so rely entirely 100% on the sat navs…‘‘Ooh look there’s a sign for a 13’ 6" bridge, I’ll just carry on, sat nav ‘sent’ me this way, ooh there it is’’ ■■■■■■ bang or even worse they never even seen the sign …OR the bridge.
A sat nav does not ‘‘send’’ you anywhere, it’s advisory, some ‘‘drivers’’ need a sat nav to find their own arse holes
They can motion wtf they like, I will carry on using my bog standard car sat nav alongside a bridge height map. Some drivers I know still do not use one at all, so do they plan to legislate for them guys to fork out for an ott, over engineered, over priced truck sat nav?
There is only one way to stop this, go back to the days when being a complete helpless ■■■■■■ ■■■■ whit actually disqualified you from holding a Class1, problem solved…you’re welcome

I wonder what the NIMBYs would complain at most, empty shelves or lorries in their village?

I forgot to add ‘or make a quick phone call’ after the little walk bit, humblest apologies! I think you know what I meant when I mentioned side streets, as in major cities. If a council puts up a 'unsuitable for LGV’s sign, then it should be deleted from the maps. But the 'sorry mate, I can’t find you blah blah doesn’t wash with me, that’s just bollox and usually translates to 'I’m sorry, I can’t be arsed to look…any driver worth his salt could find anywhere between Lands End & Jon ‘O’ Groats, simply by using the Mk1 tongue and asking

People are no longer used to drivers asking for directions.
Assuming you have found someone who still speaks English they generally look at you like you have just arrived from Pluto.
I will however just continue using me old A - Z’s or have a google round first.
I have a dedicated truckers satnav that does its job brilliantly at creating routes that avoid low bridges. As I pointed out on another thread though, it still took me down an unsuitable single track lane, which fortunately I was able to turn around from.
I don’t think there is a commercial satnav out there that won’t take you down unsuitable roads, unless someone wants to measure the width of every road in the country, the angle of every bend and factor in on street parking and traffic calming ‘chicanes’ as an extra obstruction to the progress of larger vehicles?
Apparently they will be putting the ‘motion’ to the DfT. They are supported by thousands of… villagers. It is the same old story of people not realising that they need HGVs to deliver their goods, fuel and materials. Nearsightedness, they are using the fact that a small minority of truckers don’t pay attention to road signs and get stuck to try and enforce anything that means HGVs wont go down their streets and disturb them.
If the haulage industry stopped for a day they would quickly moan about the empty shelves and fuel pumps.
