Motion to force all HGVs to use commercial sat-navs

ReturnLoads:
Apparently they will be putting the ‘motion’ to the DfT. They are supported by thousands of… villagers. It is the same old story of people not realising that they need HGVs to deliver their goods, fuel and materials. Nearsightedness, they are using the fact that a small minority of truckers don’t pay attention to road signs and get stuck to try and enforce anything that means HGVs wont go down their streets and disturb them.

If the haulage industry stopped for a day they would quickly moan about the empty shelves and fuel pumps.

My thoughts exactly. When I read that article, the cynic in me thought it was nothing to do with bridge strikes etc. and all about lorries “thundering” (anyone else noticed how lorries dont drive through villages anymore?) through villages, bringing down house prices.

People are no longer used to drivers asking for directions.

I can’t remember the last time I asked a local for directions, and they actually knew the place I was asking about. Often on the same ■■■■■■ industrial estate where they work!

Just a bit of common sense is needed, know the height of what you are dragging or driving, if your not sure ask it aint hard, or buy a laser measure of internet, and others have said get a rough plan/idea of what route your going, then if your diverted re route, and look at the height sign on a bridge, before going for it, its just common sense and NOT letting others factors rush you around. Job done.

Sounds like a pile of motions to me!

I live near a road where the NIMBYS dont want thundering juggernauts e.g. lorries passing their precious houses, but they do want the bin lorry to come down "their"road.

as long as oxford council pay for the sat navs im happy to do it,i go through cricklade everyday and am amazed they allow hgvs through

A truck nav is no different to a car nav aside from having infomation relating to the truck specific route. I’ve had my truck nav try to send me down 7.5t limits, single track roads. Hell it even demanded that I turn around in a field that it thought was a road! Having a truck nav will not save your little village from rouge truckers hell bent on following their sat-navs to the end of the earth.

they should put forward a motion to force drivers to use maps and bollox to sat navs all together, i mean what type of moron needs a sat sav ?

the trucks drive themselves these days with very little for the so called driver to do other than a bit of steering, and it seems they just can not even steer in the right direction these days

they are to dependant on sat savs so if there going to have to be that way then by all means force them to have to use a sat nav that will at least keep them well clear of roads they shouldn’t be using.

but in all honesty it does show how thick the drivers are these days, but to be fair for such low wages around its hardly surprising the guys who knew there stuff have gone only a few remain, and its now full of guys who just couldnt do a drop without there sat nav and automatic truck

so yes force the thick buggers to buy and sat nav that will do the job for them, it will protect the places these morons end up driving down.

Most of the complaints are from Watlington because thick drivers are coming off the M40 and going via the B4009 to Benson to go onto Reading. Very little industry along that route for large vehicles (maybe farms and the odd village Co op). If you aren’t sure of a route why gamble on a B on C road, just use the primary routes on an atlas. Ah wait, the same drivers who are getting caught in said weight limit don’t carry an atlas, a cheap Chinese sat nav bought from Cash Converters fits better in their Aldi carrier bag.
Either that or they’ve no room for a map and their flip flops.

Its very short sighted and will not solve the issue unfortunately for Oxfordshire cc. Rural farms and bussiness still need deliveries and god forbid the local furniture needs a delivery of mattresses or or a sofa delivered. How about the local spar shop. I think these so called villagers need to wake up abit if it bans hgvs from local roads that should include all hgvs without exception then watchem complain when the bins aren’t empited

What a shocker. A thread about truck sat navs and desypete shows his face to aim a volley of abuse and insults at drivers.
The only surprising thing is that it took him so long

I can find virtually every town and village in the country using conventional maps, the thing I can’t do however is find the specific street I need within those towns without asking someone. Call me cynical, but the satnav is a bit more accurate than depending on the average guy in the streets directions. Plus dare I say it, the digital voice speaks good English too.

If its a Town/City get a street map, if its a Village use deduction, ei, Church road is where the Church is, or ask, worked for Me for years. However I do see the logic in tech, I stopped carry my street maps many years ago and started to use Google maps to refer to a specific address, but I still use My national road atlas, to put Me in the right area. I don’t have a Sat Nav, so Unless someone is buying Me a Sat-Nav then Comercial or car, it aint happening

I see drivers are sticking together as usual :unamused:

I performed an experiment the other day.
I was just on the outskirts of malvern and had to traverse to the otherside of Ledbury to Hereford Waste paper.

Now my commercial sat nav wanted me to go M5 M50 etc, but being old school I choose my own route following the A449 straight down then left before the weight limit in ledbury tootle round to A438 head off towards Hereford past the trumpet pub etc and jobs a good un.

Now I wont say the sat nav was totally wrong but there was some tight bits where i thought I had dropped a real bollock.
Got there safe and sound but the biggest difference is that I can still remember the roads unlike if I had just blindly obeyed the sat nav.

So sisters why not try releasing yourselves from the shackles of the sat nav, its quite invigorating.

Oh and if going from malvern to ledbury at 44ton I wouldnt reccomend using the A449

I leave Google maps on with phone standby disabled. A good compromise of maps and sat nav.

I use a hgv sat-nav all the time and have no problems. I know the height of my vehicle, and i have my wits about me, so as all bridges have a height limit in feet and inches, and metres, whats the problem,
drivers are the problem for not knowing their height, and ignoring the bridge height signs. As for country lanes, tell the companies down them to re-locate, for i do not want to be in a country lane.
Most of my work is on the continent, most companies are in one area…and thats an industrial estate, and they are all well signposted and route marked.

One reason why using a HGV specific Sat nav wont yield the results expected , and that is because every unsuitable road for HGV’s in the country would have to be classed as such and have a weight limit or width restriction , otherwise the sat nav will try and route you using the side streets every time

i object
i would never hurl insults or abuse at real drivers. the guys who can really drive get my full appreciation for the skills they have.

i just dont class the morons who drive automatics and are lost without a sat nav as a real driver,

if they must use hi tech stuff then have that google maps thing, its brilliant for planing your route and you can get to see the area on street view as if your standing there, now that bit of kit is a real good thing, but to blindly follow a sat nav and then end up stuck somewhere, well it tells me all i need to know about that drivers skills or lack of.

how the hell did i drive for 26 years without an accident, without hitting a low bridge, without ending up stuck up a lane were i couldn’t get out of ? and of course without a sat nav ?

is it because i am the best driver around in the world ? or is it just because i learned how to drive and how to think like a driver would think

i would suggest its just common sense rather than any special skills i have compared to anyone else, but it does seem like common sense is a rare thing with the new breed.

jump in a cab stick it in auto tap in a post code and off you go on your way to god knows what or where you will end up, but if you end up in trouble you can just blame the sat nav rather than there own thick heads

Have used a car sat nav for years, doing shops some of the yards are in bus lanes weight limits etc so a truck sat nav wouldn’t help much

Sat nav should be a guide anyway unless they bring out the mk2 eyeball I’m not upgrading and helping of common sense has worked so far.if in doubt walk and look, ask someone or ring the shop and ask no medals for being a clever know it all and getting stuck (and the thought of getting a pic on here getting the p $ss taken,I shouldn’t say it but have stopped and looked thinking I’m not ending up on here looking a plank lol tin hat on.)
