More weight for farmers

I like seeing the “spare excavator” on farms. Normally interesting stuff like I trained on. Saw a Komatsu PC210-3 the other day and today one of those JCB 814 “Power Slides”

Most of the Magistrates and County Councillors are farmers in the rural area’s,so the farmers are basically a law unto themselves.

any chance of some figures on that , as i do not know one who is either , must get annoying carrying that big chip around

I know a lot that are both, and I’ve lived in a rural area all my life. Also been a Councillor at local level.

No vicar on the Council I was on Nathan. Only a few farmers and a couple of us other mortals. To be fair we all worked together to try and help our communities.

Have a look on a rural County Council website, then look at the County Councillors declared other interests !

Those Powerslides were a bit daft, pressed the switch to stretch the boom by jamming the bucket teeth in the ground and dragging the boom. Surely tracking a bit closer is quicker?
 They dug well but the trackbase was short so could bounce rubber duck style.

And I’m not tarring them all with the same brush. Some of my relatives are farmers and contractors/plant operators, also many of my friends who agree.

To be fair I think the ropey tractor and trailer combos are owned by “Good Life” farmers who’ve got bored with the city and spent Great Aunt Mos’ legacy on a run down farm with a few mangey cows and a clapped out Massey Fergusson.
Certainly around here, the agricultural contractors have modern kit that can tailgate a Tesco wagon.

i’ve not seen anything official, but the rumours i’ve heard are that to run at the higher speeds and weight then annual testing would be needed, possibly needing to running on air brakes as well / twin circuit brakes.

JCB have been on air brakes or had the ability for air brakes to be used for years and years.

AHT:
High power or not they are still limited to 20mph so not really going to make a dent on haulage work is it

They do far more than 20mph. A bulk standard tractor years back was limited to 20 mph but these fastrac machine do a lot more.

I know I drive them most weeks, my point was that the legal speed limit is 20mph just like the legal limit for trucks is 40mph (on singles)

Also tractors in certain circumstances can run on red but they use about twice as much fuel as a truck so no real saving.
Tractors used for general haulage work need to be operated to the same regs as trucks including C+E and operating licence, I know cus a builder I used to work for ran a tractor and got stopped by VOSA, he now has a truck
It is also not unheard of for haulage companies/drivers to run on red, exceed the speed limit and run with no O licence
Farmers delivering there own produce to the market could also use a truck with no full O-licence etc as there are certain exemptions so don’t see why you are all getting your knickers in a twist over it

^^^^
How can they use twice as much fuel as a truck? I’m not sure what HP these engines run at but I would assume they are around the 300 mark which of course is less than most trucks. If these machines were doing heavy draft work like ploughing then yes I could understand an increase in fuel consumption but surely not on regular road use?

Its the gearing on tractors that make them heavier on fuel than LGV’s when doing long road trips, also the Tyre compounds aren’t suitable for a lot of road use.

Congratulations Dave, you’ve managed to photograph a sheeted trailer! Now for the ultimate rarity, can you photograph a farmer sweeping the road?

I did see a farmer or a contractor using a tractor with a brush cleaning the A44 near Pembridge, Herefordshie last week, where they were lifting potatoes, but it is a rare sight.
Got loads of tractor pics Nathan, if any doubters want to see them.
Cheers Dave.
