More weight for farmers

There’s nothing wrong with those sorts of tractors (shown in the pics above) on the road (apart from when you are stuck behind em :grimacing: ), it is the Fastrac and their counterparts which I believe are the problem.

Here we go…

How can they use twice as much fuel as a truck? I’m not sure what HP these engines run at but I would assume they are around the 300 mark which of course is less than most trucks. If these machines were doing heavy draft work like ploughing then yes I could understand an increase in fuel consumption but surely not on regular road use?

I’d say somewhere around 150 - low two hundreds is the norm on the power front. I drive a 280 but we’ve got a 390 aswell

Back in my day :grimacing: 80 HP was about the average size for a 300 acre farm. The farms which ran into the thousands of acres were using HP at around 200 but then the Cat Challenger and the like came along and I’ve no idea what they run at!!

Plenty of Fastrac’s on these roads, with some pulling artic trailers on dollies at high speeds.
And this one going slower ignored the layby on his side, with a queue of vehicles following.

cats and quadtracs are into the 600’s, conventionals are into the 400’s now. there’s a show just started today in germany, with the rumours of a fendt 450 to be announced.

Muckaway:
To be fair I think the ropey tractor and trailer combos are owned by “Good Life” farmers who’ve got bored with the city and spent Great Aunt Mos’ legacy on a run down farm with a few mangey cows and a clapped out Massey Fergusson.
Certainly around here, the agricultural contractors have modern kit that can tailgate a Tesco wagon.

My five year old nephew can tailgate Tesco wagons on his tricycle.

quite a few power co,s run those fitted with hiabs now ,for putting transformers etc out in fields guess they may be a cheaper option to unimogs
i do a lot of roading with the 3cx and i will sit right to the left as much as i can ,do people overtake no they just sit behind even when the road is plenty wide enough with little to no oncoming traffic ,artics etc is understandable ,but your average car driver seems incapable of a simple overtaking manoeuvre these days

Have to say that seeing those quads and the like in action are pretty impressive. I bet those new Fendt’s will be an arm and a leg!!

I can’t understand why people wont overtake JCBs. You can practically see right through them. Their speed will be much lower than a conventional tractor if carrying buckets, certainly if they’ve got those awful solid front tyres. I drove a Case 580* with some fitted on a pretty good A road about 15 years ago and I got pitched about at about 20 mph.

*Which IMHO was a much better machine than a JCB.

these days its cat or volvo who would be at the top of my list , disappointed with the 2011 3cx eco i have, the 3 pump setup is pure ■■■■■
new ones now have one variable displacement pump
case is a very unbalanced machine now ,unlike the proper old case 580,s/90,s sle,s etc

i am roading to and from farnham every day at the moment ,used to be a bit of dual carriage way just before Nattas yard at Crondall on the Odiham road
now its made one lane with painted chevrons ,i get right over and people still sit behind :frowning:

Is bloody kids with no sense or experience as many have said through this thread, they shouldn’t be allowed on the road with fast tractors and more than 10 ton payload unless a new test is set for them.

I’ve just moved a Case 580 on an E reg for an old boy who’s had it since new. He reckoned I was the only other person to ever drive it (albeit it was only on and off my truck!)

It was in in amazingly good condition with only a tiny amount of rust.

EXACTLY!!

I passed my tractor test at the age of 16 and within a few hours of passing I was on the road with a 40ft artic trailer/dolly carrying heavy silage with no trailer brakes and a tractor which was not all that inclined to stop…how can that be right??

It’s not right or legal!
