i never saw them ellies dad.
i think the reson theydid it in the 70/80s was work.it wasnt for road tax or fuel.it was probaby cheaper up north in those days.i used to always fill in the north when transiting to donegal.
amazing how things take a turn.id love to have a garage in dundalk nowadays.
all the northern hauliers coming in with their 1400 ltr tanks.
this may not last too long more,i think the southern price must be getting near the sterling price now.
how much a litre in the south now?
About €1.36 for diesel at the minuite, petrol’s a bit cheaper.
ellies dad:

you must be joking. Irish trucks don’t have popeye’s in the window. The bulk of the Irish on this site have now posted on this topic and i’d say this is the closet to an anti british remark(of sorts) so far.
If ya get there on a ferry and they say top o the mornin, its all Irish to me!!
ellies dad:
Anyway i knew a few of haulage services drivers when they did glass in containers. A welshman ex army instructer,an ex soldier from Belfast oh and a catholic from Fermanagh. All humans. Funny you claim to be of irish ancestry but you don’t half seem to complain about us.
I wasn’t aware i was complaing about Irish trucks? I’m saying they aint victimised for being Irish and i’m also saying they aint all saints. I’d just charge EVERY foreign truck for coming here. You go explain the logic to someone who has to pay a congestion charge to go into Central London, when foreign trucks can run around the country willy nilly for free? Explain why our car tax is going up based upon emissions, but again foreign trucks can go round free, well they pay their own lower rate in their own country.
Anyway, i’m diverting well off topic hey?!! Lets forget what i think and see and leave VOSA to pick up who they wanna do , and in the case of the switch island checkpoint we know who’ll be sat there no matter what we say here

http://www.pumps.ie/ (Users do the updating.)
Round the corner from me is 139.9 eurocent/litre for diesel. Which would be at today’s FX rate 112p/litre
There may be a small element of racism (under the table) from some officials in the pulling of Irish trucks at the docks but let’s be fair, there is no O licensing system (i think) in Ireland, def not N.ireland and no traffic commissioners or VOSA which does lead to generally lower standards (let’s be honest). I wouldn’t say the police over (when you see them!) are that bothered unless you land it in a field. Also to be fair to the Brits, they pull ALL foreign trucks throughout the UK not just Irish ones, can you blame them? I don’t.
I run trucks in the UK and live in fear of “the man” even though I do my best to run 100% legal. You guys would laugh at the small amount of work I get my drivers to do and the money I pay for that small amount of work, all so “the man” doesn’t come knocking at the door. One sniff of you for a minor infringement over here and they can do a real number on you and give you major problems.
Who gets everything right? Not even Stobarts are 100% Would I be as careful in the running of my trucks if I was based In Ireland? I would like to say yes but I would have to say no. It’s fear of sanctions and the chance of being caught that make UK operators run legit. Perhaps a bit of pride comes in to it but if you can cut small corners and save some brass, who wouldn’t?
well after all that, has anyone heard about them been taken over or what ,
I may aswell ad my informative, educated viwpoint on the matters discussed earlier, please don’t take offence to this.
VOSA ARE A PACK OF SCUTTERHEADS

you do need an operating license in ireland known as a haulage license and in the north as well you must be licensed…
we all have different discs to the english one/
its harder to get a license in ireland then england because as well as the usual requirments///financial standing, good repute.
you need to be tax cleared and vat of course.

fanatastic…keep them coming
Ok so you need a licence in the north of Ireland but does anyone check up on them? They don’t have VOSA or traffic Comissioners. What’s the regime like in the south with regards to compliance?

to most of us on this side of the box
an Irish haulier is one that is based in the island of IRELAND
we get confused because southern Ireland start near the north of Ireland
you should just say which of the four areas you come from
then explain why we call the 6 northern counties Ulster when it should be 9 or is it 8 or 10
Ulster contains 9 Counties
6 of them are across the border in the North of Ireland, the Other 3 are in the South of Ireland or the ROI. So 9 in total. There are 32 counties in Ireland, 6 of them are not governed by the ROI.
After the partition of Ireland in 1921, what eventually became the state of Ireland, comprised 26 of these counties, with Northern Ireland comprising the remaining six.
