How wide are the sunvisors on most trucks? They installed these on a few vans at my current work, but didn’t realise the sunvisor just nicely covers the internal camera while the forward facing bit works fine. Also handy as you can’t get accused of interfering with the camera using duct-tape etc.
As for legal - unfortunately it seems the fact that they own the van / truck means they can install these cameras. Can usually tell they’re running as there’s a small blue light (no idea why they all use the same blue LED). If they were filming while you were parked up however, then there could be a privacy case I suspect as “break” means “the driver is free to dispose of his / her time as they please”.

I fail to see the issue of the camera being on you when your driving! Unless your acting unprofessionally then you deserve to be taken to task
So presumably, if you weren’t doing anything wrong, you’d have no objection to cameras being installed in the toilet so you could be filmed while you were having a dump?
Tin hat on here, but I don’t understand this “invasion of privacy” thing.
It is not being proposed that drivers are filmed disposing of their times on breaks or at any other time when not driving. The current proposal is the cameras will only run when the ignition is on, but this will likely be extended to when the engine is running. You’ll be filmed when your sat in the drivers seat driving, nothing else & footage will be used to investigate incidents to see what you were doing at the time. If your not having incidents, the footage will never be viewed. I’m pretty sure bus drivers have CCTV cameras on them for investigation purposes, they aren’t complaining about an invasion of privacy because they aren’t doing anything that might be considered ‘private’ - they are sat driving a company vehicle. Staff in supermarkets have cameras on them whilst they are at work, staff in offices, whats the difference exactly? The way people are going on it’s as if the red lights going to be on whilst your changing out of your undies at night.
Like I said, it’s a sad state of affairs that it’s come to this, but i’m certainly not going to be resigning over it. FFS, Maritime have over 1500 drivers, no office bods going to be interested in viewing hours of footage of individual drivers sat there picking their nose.
With regards to the bus thing. Pretty sure the average city bus driver is carrying a large chunk of change by the end of the day and they can be an easy target for any scrote who thinks he’s an 'ard man so it makes sense for CCTV to installed to watch the driver.

I also suspect CCTV on bus drivers has also deterred certain drivers from looking at their phone at the wheel, or letting their mates on for free, slipping change into their own pocket etc.

The difference is that you choose to drive a truck because you want to be left alone and not be under constant observation. People who choose to drive buses or work in supermarkets choose to do a non-solitary job where it is a given that they are on public display at all times. Truck drivers don’t.
When I was growing up, the Soviet Union was held up as the epitome of evil, largely because of the amount of surveillance carried out on ordinary citizens going about their daily business. So what’s the difference exactly?
We’ve had these for a couple of years now. They go off when the ignition is turned off, you tend to forget they are there. I have to say they have aided a couple of our lads that have had accidents and proved they were doing nothing wrong

Thing is, like anywhere else I think you lose your right to be left alone when you start breaking the rules. It is of course a minority spoiling it for everyone else, which is unfortunate but ever so typical.
It really doesn’t matter what they do to drivers nowadays, be it cameras in cabs, or traffic office dissection of the drivers working day, most drivers will just roll over and take what is given them, like the spineless mob they have become over the years. Drivers have always been gullible though and whilst the truck owner is sleeping in their warm bed at home, the hapless employee is guarding their truck for free in some remote layby without even a second thought.
Driving has always been a solitary profession, that suits those that want minimal interaction with others in the workplace and in this instance, I personally would just change companies to one that didn’t have these cameras. It hardly like there a shortage of driving jobs out there now.

If Maritime have a problem with numpties ramming people up the arse, simple answer stop employing numpties its a complicated alternative, pay the proper rate, treat your people with respect and cherry pick…or do the other thing and continue the downhill event.
it not only maritime though, insurance firms are now starting too insist that they are fitted and give a discount where they are, i just had one fitted too my car and got £75 discount off my premium for the year
What?, a camera trained on you in your own car?
i should have said a forward facing camera in my own car.

thats what my mate said. he heard they estimating that accident could cost there insurer upto quarter of a million pounds and is likley too increase there insurance premium considerably.
Toddy2:
Maybe the accident on the M1 J16 North last Wednesday has added weight to this decision
When the Maritime Truck hit another truck up the chuff, pushed it into a UK Mail truck, that was pushed into a VW Golf, that was in turned pushed into a Jempsons
All in all, 4 trucks & 1 car
The pair in the car got out unhurt but very shaken,
The UK Mail driver, quite shaken,
The bloke behind, had a bone in his shoulder sticking through his fleece,
The Maritime Driver was screaming apparently,
Not sure of his injuries, but at least the screaming meant he was alive & his airways were clear
Yeah it was this incident. Apparently he admitted being on the phone to his wife. All the drivers where I’m based have all unofficially said no way but you know what it’s like, we’ll all probably just bend over!
They tried it at my last employers in one depot. All the drivers threw their coats over the camera at the start of their shift knowing they couldn’t all be sacked if they stuck together. Sure enough the cameras were removed eventually!
What the problem with them recording you while driving. Many times a day your on CCTV while driving and they only record while the ignition is switched on whats the issue. If you dont like it stand up stick together and fight it.
If you dont want to them jack the job and go else were.At the end of the day its there trucks and will do all they can to reduce cost of costings ie insurance.
Too many drivers (not just lorry drivers) have collisions because they were doing something they shouldn’t have been whilst driving. Having a camera there might just dissuade someone from checking their phone, rolling a smoke or doing anything else they shouldn’t at the wheel. I understand why companies want to do this. You are after all entrusted with 100k+ worth of motor plus cargo and are representing the company at a time where public image is important.
However, I don’t agree with it. It shows a lack of trust between employer and employee.

Will save them paying out £1000s if you have an accident and the footage shows you yawning 5 mins before and they won’t pay because they will claim you drive tired ect ect,do you really think a camera pointing at the driver is there for any other reason but to help the insurance company get out of paying out on a claim?!But,you saved £75…go you!!
How will the fact that you drove while tired allow them to refuse a claim…?
