Maggie Thatcher dragged this country kicking and screaming into the Twenty first century, she was the type of leader this country needs now but will not get. She believed in this country and was one of it’s greatest patriots. RIP Maggie.

Exactly which of her policies are no longer being used now and exactly what policies of hers do we need now that we haven’t already had/got and that have been proved not to work. The fact is the economy is now a service industry based industrial wasteland reliant on imports and wages based on printed borrowed money. While the weakened unions can’t keep incomes in line with the resulting ever decreasing value of the currency in real terms.

Read the post again you managed to miss the point, it was character I was referring to not policies. I think we’ve moved on a little in the last thirty years.

The way I see it we’ve just had a load of politicians who’ve carried on her ‘policies’ to the letter. The ‘character’ was all an act to cover up the fact that contrary to being a so called ‘patriot’ she was actually a global free marketeer who sold the place out first to the EU then to Russia and China. In just the same way that she flogged off the country’s social housing stock. So that her champaigne socialist council tenant supporters could make a few quid from the deal, off the backs of hard working private house buyers, who’d had to pay for their own houses, including the deposit money required to buy them,in addition to the mortgage.

Just heard the news about Thatcher, can’t say that I am wailing with uncontrollable grief.
And before the sycophants start eulogising her lets have a look at her true legacy.
Thriving communities were destroyed by her policy of ‘greed is good’ the rich got richer and to hell with the rest of us.
More crime,
more drug use, more suicides
and the collapse of the ‘community’ way of life.
She sold off the public owned industries to ‘kick-start’ the rip-off Britain that we have today, the railways, gas, electric, telecom needed reform yes, but all she did was pass them onto foreign ownership with the resultant charges that we suffer today.
She did look after her family, while destroying everyone else’s, children were forced to move away, or both partners forced to work to make ends meet. The result is the high social care costs of today - but fair play mun, she looked after Denis, letting him use No.10 notepaper for his business so foreigners thought that they were dealing with the government, and her boy, whatisname, done all right with dodgy arms deal didn’t he.
Talking about arms deals, how many did she and the Argentinian generals kill in the Falklands, a war every expert states could have been averted if we had acted sooner, but there you are, she won a general election on their graves.
Health and education became run-down, and the school playgrounds sold off, and the tories of today have the gall to complain about obesity.
Heavy industry, such as shipbuilding, steel and coal mining wiped out to make entirely dependent on other countries for our manufactured goods. Now we don’t make anything thanks to Thatcher just serve each other in shops and such and watch
h the bankers laugh at us.
Which brings me to the biggest con of all, selling off council houses cheaply, sounded great didn’t it. But did you notice that although the house prices were reduced thereby starving local authorities of money, the interest rates shot up so the fat cats won again. But the real motive was to get everyone in debt, and it succeeded, and once you owe a lot of money you are less likely to strike for your rights.
I can’t be bothered to add bits on the poll tax riots, standards of living dropping for the first time in this country, increasing poverty levels, the two-faced rhetoric over Europe, the disgraceful pandering to American bankers, and the cold indifference to peoples suffering.

^ + 1.Being just some of her ‘acheivements’.

Just noticed the bit I added at the bottom was missing  “I didn’t write the above, and do not know who did - but I agree with every single word.”

I don’t see the same attitude towards North Korea’s warmongering and threats as was shown by Thatcher towards Argentina  .Seems like bullying of one country because it’s weaker while appeasing another because it’s stronger with an even stronger ally in China,to me.Notwithsatnding the rights and wrongs of the Falklands War in which it’s arguable as to wether the idea of choosing to fight instead of negotiating to hand the Islands over before that point, and bringing it’s ‘British’ residents home, was the right option.

Love her or hate her we could do with the likes of her now. She certainly sorted out the likes of Red robbo and judging by what was written in the Times this weekend the union officials are still at it, it turns out in South Wales that one branch of the Miners has 4 members , three of which are officials on £200k a year and one none board member , so it seems their still at it looking after number one and Bo… the lads who pay the subs. Anyone who had to deal with Liverpool Branch in the 60/70,s knows the way it used to work before they had their wings clipped, fined for this blacked for that . Sleep in your cab ? that got you a fine or on the blacklist but improve the ■■■■■ digs you had to stay in parts of the country it didn’t matter to them they were home every night. I remember having yes having to attend a mass meeting ( or your firm ended up on the dreaded list ) when a vote was being taken for what they called a " Day of action " in support of canteen workers , this entailed a march in support of them and any one not taking part would be fined a days pay if found to be in breech of this . One driver asked the question " what if im away down the road on the day in question what happens then ? he was told that he should remain parked up for the 24 hrs as a sign of solidarity and would be in breech of the ruling if he moved, He then asked the question " what doses the “T” stand for in the T.G. W. U, stand for? the reply was “Transport” he said well considering the majority of the union was drivers when were they going to take consideration of the lads who paid their wages instead of the dockers ect who were the minority. Three weeks later they told him to appear at the union office on some trumped up charge of " misconduct" and tried to fine and take his card away. No I don’t agree with all Maggies policies but a good shake up was well overdue. Rip Maggie.

^^-1 You say this as if it was all bad. Some of us agree with her acheivements, just a shame they didn’t go further. Sad :frowning: that so many losers have to be unkind to a dead person, even if they disagreed with her when she was alive. Notice that the ■■■■■■■■ losers are all those people that relied on a helping hand from the State (wanting someone else to pay) rather than “making it” on their own merits.

Never had a penny from the State, Pal. Just saw hard working communities destroyed. I have been (relatively) lucky - but that doesn’t mean that I have ever subscribed to the “I’m all right Jack” mentality…

Some of those “hard working communities” were casualties of the fight with the unions over who runs Britain. They chose to back the wrong side. It is possible for anyone to better themselves, without holding the rest of us to ransom as many members of those “hard working” communities attempted, and succeeded for many years, before Maggie triumphed.

As someone who has always had to pay my own way, I see no problem with a bit of I’m all right Jack. If Jack got off his arse he could be alright too.

Like council tenants effectively being given a subsidised state funded house by Maggie whereas others had to buy their own from the start including saving up for a deposit. So no surprise that ‘some’ needed to fight more to keep wages in line with prices than ‘others’. :unamused:

Or to put it another way unions could be seen as a sort of insurance policy to make sure that one worker doesn’t try to undercut another to the point where neither can afford to support ‘themselves’ properly including paying for their own house rather than having to rely on state funding to subsidise their housing costs amongst others. :bulb:

Don’t forget we also had mines, factories and steel works etc etc in the South too which were eventually closed down just the same owing to her bs policies of giving the country’s wealth creating industry away to the foreign competition.

The so called tory ‘majority’ at the 1979 election was 53% of a 76% turnout. The 1983 election was 61% of a 72% turnout.

I lived in a council house just after I got married. I could have bought that house, but I saved my deposit and bought a private house, which 31 years later I still live in. The house I bought is not grand, but it is in a nice area, and the location suits my work. Every now and then we think about moving, but in the end we always decide that we like where we are better than anywhere else we could afford.

This idea you have that increasing wages somehow would help you better yourself is nuts, as prices of everything would simply rise to compensate, so you would be no better off unless you could make yourself alone better off than your fellow wage slaves. Oh yeah, the miners tried that one, didn’t they? Then they met their nemesis.
