Grabbing a hand full of steering wheel is the last thing you should be doing in a 44 tonne truck, that results in death and destruction.
really, you don’t say.
unfortunately, when presented with a life changing scenario, people react, sometimes that results in people grabbing a handful of steering wheel. rightly or wrongly.
They are supposed to be professional drivers, in complete control of there vehicle but clearly they are not.
It’s not just this incident, there’s plenty been posted up on this site were the driver has got him/her self into a situation cant get out of it and panicked.
none of us know what happened in this tragic incident, and now sadly 2 people are dead.
i’ll agree with you that there are some so called “proffesional” drivers out there, that i wouldn’t trust with a wheel barrow.
on the whole though, most are very good and in complete control of their vehicle, but when a situation arises immediately in front of you, and you have a split second to react, what are you going to do■■?
i assume your a l.g.v driver yourself?
because if you are, you’ll be fully aware of how quickly a fully freighted truck can cause a whole load of damage, resulting in serious injury or death. just because you see pictures of a truck on its side, you shouldn’t assume that it ended up in that state because as you put it, “the driver wasn’t in complete control.”
as an example, have you ever seen the youtube clip of the big truck crash a while back in italy?

Crack on like this eh
Just been on radio that he’s been arrested and bailed which i thought meant that he was effectively under investigation and this is standard practice.
If he’s found not to be at fault then he won’t be charged.
The attitude seems to be that we are the professional drivers and therefore have to take all steps to avoid accidents caused by other drivers and if we fail then we are guilty.
My personal view is that everyone driving, unless displaying L plates and accompanied by a qualified driver, has passed a test that means that they are competent to drive the vehicle that they are in charge of. This being thet case makes them as liable for their actions just like anyone else. You cannot have one group of drivers being solely responsible for the incompetence of other drivers
BIGGEE:
just been on local tv news that they have charged the wagon driver with death by dangerious driving.
Charged? Not read that on any news reports yet - only that he’s been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and bailed. This is standard procedure in any fatal incident, and doesn’t imply anything, until the investigations have been concluded and charges brought (or not.)

I agree with this, I’ve always said “I’m one person, I can drive 1 vehicle at a time, you need someone else to drive yours, then find someone else and stop expecting me to do it”
As I’ve said before though, a lot of it isn’t lack of ability, it’s lack of care, there’s a difference. They’ve all passed a test to say they’re able to drive, unfortunately they also have to do their make-up, make a phone call, do their facebook updates etc etc.
The amount of times I’ve been sat outside a delivery point, and I see people get in their car, start the engine, put their seatbelt on and then make a phone call whilst manouvering out of the ■■■■■■■■■■■■ and then onto the road - not hands free, really boils my ■■■■, if the call is urgent, it won’t take long, make the call THEN drive, if it’s not urgent, either use handsfree or wait and ring them when you’ve finished the journey.

Had to laugh at them putting posters up on the bridge at 20 secs… bit futile?
Non the less proves my point that these works could be done a lot quicker than they are, the whole m1 from rugby to leeds took 3 years to build from scratch, yet 10-15 miles of managed motorway takes 2 years?
As I came off the M62 this afternoon to join the M1/M621…The woman in front of me, was texting whilst going round the roundabout I am close to giving up, I really am.

Maybe you should look into a mobile with bigger buttons
I`m not in a position to point the finger of blame at any particular person in this terrible accident but i have to say that there are some particularly bad drivers on the road nowadays. I dont claim to be anywhere near perfect myself but only yesterday i had some idiot trying to undertake me whilst going round a roundabout. It was only down to me being vigilant with my mirrors which prevented me running over this plonker in his Astra but i feel that this type of lunacy is becoming all too common on our roads and its all too easy to blame the driver of the larger vehicle. I would agree with the calls for cameras to be installed in lorries to make sure justice is done .
Driving standards do seem to have deteriorated in recent years. I was driving LGVs infrequently in the last few years and on one occasion last year I had to take a loaded tipper to Cargills at Liverpool. Coming back on the M62 out of Liverpool one clown in an Scania with a plant trailer (all the lights, bells and whistles etc on the cab) came on to the motorway from a slip road straight in front of me forcing me to brake, he then went straight into the middle lane forcing someone else to brake. It was at that moment that I decided not to renew my LGV licence when it expired last August because I no longer got any pleasure out of driving. At one time I couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel. Now I’m glad that I can’t.

Cameras would be needed all round the vehicle to highlight those that tailgate, those that insist upon trying to overtake on either side at roundabouts, those that overtake and immediately cut in front of you removing your braking distance, those that accelerate whilst being overtaken, those that try to pass on the nearside whilst you are signalling left.
If I have forgotten anything then feel free to add it to the list.

I agree totally, most service buses have cameras all round them so theres no reason why it cant be done with units and traillers. Theres already an electrical hook up on the trailer which could be modified to connect up to cameras fixed on the trailer. Would be expensive to set up but what price do you put on a life ■■

i dont belive cameras would save lives the accidents would still happen due to the soft squishy part behind the wheel what they would do though is clear any driver wrongly accused and convict any driver found to be driving dangerous which can only be a good thing in my view
not to mention if a truck is fully fitted with cameras is invollved in a bad crash it should be a case of view video say right he did this which made her do that etc etc they are the cause of it clear the rd get it open again
Selfish as it may sound, my only concern is that I don’t blamed for something that is not my fault, if other drivers want to do stupid things then that is their choice.
