M62 @ west York jct 26

Some odd skidmarks, looks like one of the vehicles struck the central barrier.

They are far too narrow, I very rarely use that stretch of the M62, but I remember when the roadworks 1st went in, I was in the middle lane as i entered the roadworks and I was shocked at how close vehicles were as the lanes narrowed, I moved over to the left at the 1st opportunity and stayed there, if and when I do use that stretch while there’s still roadworks, I will always stay in the left lane.

It’s almost like lanes 2 & 3 are 6ft 6in restricted

Yep, it definitely surprised me the first time I went through how close it was. If you’ve got to overtake something very slow moving I tend to straddle rather than invite a Sprinter van or something up my o/s.

Looks like the car was dragged a hell of a way pinned under the box :open_mouth:

At least the 3 yellow camera’s had a grandstand view of it, whoever is to blame will be found out!! Not a video I’d like to watch!!

No, those are just the average speed cameras, for the 50mph limit through the roadworks section.

I agree with several earlier posters, the narrow lanes through that stretch at the moment are ridiculous. A big accident waiting to happen. :frowning:

Grabbing a hand full of steering wheel is the last thing you should be doing in a 44 tonne truck, that results in death and destruction.

really, you don’t say.
unfortunately, when presented with a life changing scenario, people react, sometimes that results in people grabbing a handful of steering wheel. rightly or wrongly.

Indeed, the yellow cameras will be no use but that whole roadworks section is littered with CCTV cameras so I would expect that there will be some fairly clear footage of what happened.

Maybe, but that’s why there’s a 50mph speed limit.

Yeah, one eye on the speedo the other on the road…

Add narrow lanes and you have concentration central. One error and its either license or accident…

I agree 100% with what people are saying about the narrow lanes, they are bloody dangerous.

Quite frankly the M62 around Leeds is too busy a stretch of motorway for a construction site to be taking up so much road capacity for so long. Its WINTER 2013 before we see the back of those roadworks… complete ■■■■ take.

I’m no expert but why can’t they construct this managed motorway thing intensifly section by section… ie. close the road between J28-J27 every Sat/Sun night for 2/3 weeks, down to 1 or 2 lanes at night during the week. During that period they rally the troops, get the job done then move onto the next section. During the day the road is restored to full 3 lane capacity with just the hard shoulder coned off. Better to have a bit of disruption at night for a while, where traffic can divert without too much bother, than have years of constant disruption 24/7.

Surely in this day and age a bit of hard shoulder widening, installtion of a few laybys, cameras and gantrys can be done quicker than over 2 years? There just seems to be a lot of nothing going on most of the time.

If the Olympics were in Leeds these works would have been finished ages ago.

I agree with the above post & I don’t believe that a majority of roadworks on our motorway networks are necessary in the first place. ‘Managed motorways’ don’t bring anything positive to road users & if these roadworks were not in place i think the chances of this carnage would have been slim…!

The poor highways lot can’t win! One minute we’re complaining about the state of the roads and the congestion, and then why they try to do something about it, we complain about that as well!

They are supposed to be professional drivers, in complete control of there vehicle but clearly they are not.
It’s not just this incident, there’s plenty been posted up on this site were the driver has got him/her self into a situation cant get out of it and panicked.

^^its called being human. Humans make mistakes. If we didn’t there wouldn’t be such a thing as accidents

Yes but professional drivers should be out there doing it better than every one else and not making these basic mistakes should they?
Every day, and you will agree, there’s drivers out there in control of 44 tonne trucks who you wouldn’t trust with a ■■■■■■ wheel barrow!!!

Narrow doesn’t begin to describe them, surprised there hasn’t been more accidents.

Agree mate but i was more meaning when a 10th of a second natural instinct takes over type moment.
You could be the best driver in the world but when something happens out the blue what you should do and what you do do are two different things

i havent read all the posts but id bet a pound to a penny that a car or other smaller vehicle caused it ,then without even knowing what had happened carried on its merry little way
my prayers go to all families involved

Looking at all the carnage in his rear view mirror shaking his head at all the idiots behind!!! So often the case.

Ross.

If the lanes are narrow, then why not just straddle to overtake, bearing in mind the truck you are overtaking is going slower than 45mph ish. If the truck in lane one is doing 50mph, why do you want to overtake? Are you exempt from the speed limit? They could make lanes two and three a width restriction, but the truck drivers who are speeding will ignore the width restriction too, as I have seen numerous times in the roadworks where I work. 99% of the time, especially on motorways, it is not the road that is dangerous, it is the idiot driver that is dangerous, truck or car.
But thoughts must go to the two people killed and the truck driver.

Reading a couple of the posts above, Maybe it’s time to make all roadworks/narrow lanes 30mph :open_mouth: :sunglasses:

Rob 2288, even to a layman it would be difficult to rip up roads, relay, concrete etc. cure, have the staff working a straight 30 hrs, 2 on 5 off shift
