I didn’t forget it, you don’t need to ask for liquor, but if you’re weird you ask not to have it.

I’ve just had gammon steak 2 fried eggs and boiled spuds all cooked by my own fair handSent from my iPad using Tapatalk
That’s been one of my favourite teas since I was a kid! I use those tins of boiled new potatoes, I drain the water, slice them up and fry them in a little butter, chest magnifique
Oh my, on the same page. Tinned new potatoes with some bacon lardons and and a couple of fried eggs. I limit it to once every couple of weeks though to give the heart half a chance. We need a cab grub thread stickied so I can get some inspiration.

That’s a great idea, maybe even a subforum!
In other news BBC World Service have a programme called The Food Chain and next week is about lorry drivers diet and I’m be on it! I’ll be cooking something in the lorry and they’ll do a bit of an interview. Exciting eh! Maybe it’s time to get a healthy eating campaign for lorryists going!

I have a rice cooker, good for boiling anything, not just rice, a mini George Foreman grille, a toaster oven and a microwave, there’s not much I can’t cook in the truck that I could at home, it’s not only healthier, I can also eat when and what I want to and it saves me a fortune.

4 on 4 off tramping and no fridge in the motor. Seems to be the norm on Downtons. Any views?buy a coolbox and stop being a woose…job done, thread closed…no more to see…move along now…
Well, a coolbox isn’t a fridge and while it may chill cans of pop down, it won’t keep cooked meat down to a safe temperature. I doubt that any of the Downton’s directors consider that they can get by without a fridge in their houses, possibly they consider that such a thing would be too much of a luxury for their drivers?
But then you have to ask, if drivers are prepared to tramp for Downtons without having a fridge in the truck, then why would Downtons pay to have fridges fitted in the first place? It would add about £300 to the cost of a new truck which, over 4 years would be around £1.50 a week. Totted up over the whole fleet, that would pay for a new BMW and a holiday in Barbados for one of the directors.
Personally I wouldn’t dream of working for Downtons so all I can say to anyone mug enough to do so is “■■■■ it up, Buttercup!”

[emoji106] To that , I eat when I want what I want , have tea with proper milk in it and really cold cans , plus my fridge don’t drain the battery like a cool box

Yes a quite easy view, If you overnight then the truck cab should at least have a bunk ( can be a fold down bunk over the front seats) or the company has to provide a hotel. and that’s it,. no requirement for a fridge, microwave, night heater , curtains, cab tall enough to stand up in, coffee maker etc in law they are not needed so the answer to your question, its a luxury. You may argue that in this day and age drivers expect such things, but ultimately they are just extra’s that don’t need to be provided and there is no right to demand them.

and then imagine…I wonder how long itl take my tea to arrive if I google…takeaways close to me…
I have a Waeco, purchased by myself, for me. Look around you at some of your colleagues and ask yourself, would you follow them and use a frig after they had got out of the motor. Typhoid springs to mind, look around their cab and imagine what the inside of a fixed frig would look like. No thanks, I 'll stick with my personal plug in

Just pointing out the reality in law all that has to be provided is a bunk if sleeping in the cab, everything else is an extra- acceptable in this day and age ? probably not but that is all that is required
there is no legal requirement to pay drivers night out money that £25 or what ever you get paid is at the discretion of the employer he could leave a driver to just try to claim it himself- although it would be a daft driver who accepted those conditions
the point is all your employer is legally bound to provide is a bunk anything else is an extra as far as the law is concerned

Yes this is true but maybe a time to look at this & an update in it as we do now live in 2016 to me I would rather have a fridge in the cab than a night heater or air con
Now as we know a lot of cars & vans are coming with sat nav as standard maybe it is time for lorry manufactures to start updating & moving with the times a bit ok most have redesigned the outside & some of the inside which is updated & nice tbh but a fridge is not that much to ask if away all week as said you wouldn’t live with out 1 at home ( as I spend as much time in cab as at home it is nice that I do have 1 that my boss had put in at his expense also has an anderson lead it I want to put an inverter in microwave kettle etc not a problem )
Ok we know a fridge will take some of the storage space but we need to make some sacrifices in life as my cab also only has 1 bunk as has storage lookers where top bunk would have been so I am not sort of storage space & we never double man so np to me

You’re a nice chap Rikki and I like you but do you feel this post is helpful? From the man who runs the site primarily for drivers? What chance do we have of improving our lot when the like of you seemingly imply we don’t deserve to have night heaters let alone fridges? Imagine a boss is reading through this thread, as some do I’ve no doubt, and seen many of us making a sensible reasoned case for them to spec fridges. Then you pop up to remind them all we deserve is a plank of wood and a bit of foam. That could swing some of them back the other way what with it coming from someone of your standing within the industry. Ill judged and poorly timed in my opinion.
But hey you’re OK when you go on jollies, nice hotel rooms with dinner and drinks on expenses…

But maybe there should be in law such rights, either that or the company must pay in full the cost of at least 2 hot meals every day for those drivers who are on the road 6-7 days + at any time ( and it would be up to the driver where they chose to eat as well as choice from menu) even the tax fee meal allowance isn’t realistic should the driver have to eat out, But then all of a sudden the built in frigo sounds like the cheaper option , as for the fridge being unclean after someone else has been using it, there’s nothing some dettol spray or bleach or similar and some cloths won’t sort out prior to using it, bicarbonate of soda is a cheaper alternative
Big companies may pay to advertise on here…Mere drivers don’t! #feathermynest
The law is always 2 steps behind the real world.
The legal bare minimum is not what drivers these days expect dare I say demand (well whinge about is probably closer).
Chats to my fictional grandpappy make me realise I would blart like a ■■■■■ if faced with a truck missing power steering, night heater and even air con.
Now extrapolate that to new drivers of today faced with what I had in the 80’s, sleeping across seats, fold down bed, then full sleeper cab with no extra headroom or night heater, non synchro boxes, no leccy windows, no radio (unless you bought it yourself) etc and the thoughts of nighting out would scare some poopless.
Political correctness, elf and safety, evolution or just wanting better kit because better kit is available, call it what you will but yesterday’s optional extra is tomorrow’s standard fleet spec fitment.
So we are on the cusp of fridges becoming a necessity, perhaps not so much the day driver but those doing a few nights out a week or more require their home comforts.
If my vision of the future of this industry is correct prospective employers need to not only offer decent pay and conditions for driver recruitment and retention but also offer decent kit. It’s a false economy to despec a truck and I would not work for a company that did this.
Course better kit can balance out lower pay for the cab happy like me, but each to their own.
Oh my truck has a fridge (can be set as a freezer at the back), microwave and I even have my own cooler box for extras.
Also got an electric cooker under the bunk if me micro should pack in and I have to rough it.
So fridge = luxury or necessity, well still considered a luxury for now but only just.
I am not implying that drivers shouldn’t have these Luke in fact made it clear that in this day and age they should,
Just pointing out the reality in law all that has to be provided is a bunk if sleeping in the cab, everything else is an extra- acceptable in this day and age ? probably not but that is all that is required
But the fact remains that there is nothing to say that employers must provide a fridge. What we would like and the reality of what is required to be provided are two different things. Personally before a fridge becomes a mandatory bit of equipment I would like to see a minimum interior cab size and working night heaters become law, I see them as essential rather than a fridge. I still know of guys having to cope with fold down bunks behind the seats in day cabs that to my mind is unacceptable not having a fridge is an inconvienience in comparison

Rikki, I disagree with you regarding the term luxury and also the sentiment. The law is and has shown to be lagging in many areas and is not the bastion of what is acceptable. To be a luxury is not defined by the ever changing law. In fact, law change is driven by recognition of outdated flaws and best practice. If this were not the case it would still be acceptable to send ten year olds down mines. This is an extreme example.
It is a very slippery slope to use terms such as “luxury” to any extraneous topic that falls outside of law as this is a term when it comes to aspiring for progressive change. A term I could see a company use when sitting with a union (I did work for a company that refferred to something outside of basic law as luxury when embatteled with the union) but not within the workforce press.
