Luxury or necessity

4 on 4 off tramping and no fridge in the motor. Seems to be the norm on Downtons. Any views?

Downtons do curtainside work don’t they? Why would you want to chill a load of bog rolls?

Definite luxury.
My 14 year old tanker, well it’s the company’s really but you know what I mean, doesn’t have cruise control or a reversing monitor…or even built-in sat-nav! :open_mouth:

My previous fridge (a Coleman) died about a year ago and to get by I bought a small cooler which was not big enough, last month I bought a Road Pro with a clear door and an interior light, it was so cheap I couldn’t resist it, I am very impressed with it, it holds 9 cans on the bottom shelf with bottles laid on top of them, the top shelf holds quite a bit of food and is so cold it keeps a few pints of Ben & Jerry’s frozen for over 3 hours.
It cost $87.00.

Same with our lot, Actros with no fridge specced up.
Driver’s welfare is not exactly top of the list with them,…or even mid table come to think of it.

Btw I have my own which was bought for me, (as well as a microwave) by an ex. firm that actually appreciated me, where I was not just an arse on a seat.

LUXURY nothing more, 4-4 hardly worth the bother considering you could have up to 8 drivers use the motor on your 4 off who are perhaps not so diligent or enthusiastic as you

First World Problem:

I have to work four days a week to live. I also have to drink warm Evian water and buy a Salad Bowl from Sainsbury’s every day which costs me £1.50 because my boss won’t pay to put a fridge in my truck. :::sigh:::

Something as basic as a fridge really shouldn’t be a luxury for trampers in this day and age. Still too many cheapskate bosses around. Think about it, add fridges when speccing new trucks and it would add pennies per week to the finance/lease payment.

Our very latest Scania’s don’t have a fridge but they aren’t really used for tramping, only shift way and the odd night out. Our Scania rigids and Toplines have fridges. My old Renault didn’t, just bought a coolbox, worked just fine.

I think it adds about £500 to the price, and for a large fleet ordering many trucks at a time I’m sure it could be a bargaining tool.
But I suppose if you’re an accountant, and ordering 100 plus trucks a £50,000 saving or whatever the weekly payment saving would be might look good. Or it could be the person specifying the trucks has no idea of what a trampers job is and thinks all trucks drivers eat in cafes.

I would write a stern letter to your MP and MEP claiming a human right breach and it is illegal not to have a fridge under article 78 , paragraphs 122 to 189 .
I have a good mind to Email Bev Bell .
For Gods sake , even Bertie had a fridge tramping around Europe to keep his cucumber and Marmite butties cool .
How will you keep the Red Bull chilled ?

I know it’s easy to knock the op’s question, especially for those that started tramping many years ago, when I started some bosses still thought a night heater was a luxury, and having a low cabbed tractor unit was pretty normal.

I think these days night heaters are a standard fitting, and you can stand up in even the most basic trucks.

If it’s there I’ll take it. Not really a necessity though, is it? Unless you need to store medication maybe.

Downtons are doing their thing and at the moment that doesn’t include putting a fridge under the bunk. Ask at interview I guess if something is a deal breaker, and if it is don’t take the job. If they get enough people telling them that a fridge is essential, maybe they’ll rethink.

I’d probably just go to Halfords and buy a cool box though if I liked a job.

Can count on the fingers of one hand with some spare how many motors I’ve driven in the last 20 odd years with a fridge and given almost all that time has been agency that’s a lot of motors.

You just have to look at most of the replies here to spot the rejects and the professionals, tramping and they don’t think they should have a fridge as a basic need, and that’s why most haulers don’t speck it, employ a reject and save money.

Right answer.

12v Cool box, £39.99 single ring camping stove £9.99 1 pan £1.00 1 saucepan £1.00 can opener £0.50 cutlery £1.00 SORTED!

Then on top of that you need food. You would need food at home so it’s no extra cost. A bit of forward planning and buying you can have a nice meal cooked up in under 30 minutes. Fresh veg boiled up then remove some water add oxo, add pre cooked chicken and simmer - chicken casserole :sunglasses:

My boss had fridges put in all the units at his expense although only do about 3-4 night out it is useful

Would you live at home without a fridge  think not so why when you spend nearly as much time in the cab as at home have something as basic as a fridge they should come as standard in this day & age
